It does help to have a steady hand, leaning on something helps a lot. My previous experience is is arc/stick welding. TIG is very clean in comparison, no smoke or fumes and no spitting or blobs of molten metal dropping into your boot for impromptu dancing mid weld.
Thanks for the encouragement.

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Yes TIG Dave, access is tricky too with the torch and feeding the rod in from another angle. When you see an experienced welder in action it is art, how they get them so neat I dont know, takes an experienced steady hand.

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Got some time at the weekend to get back on the exhaust conversion then ran out of gas so partial update and another problem. I am new to TIG welding and not an experienced welder so it is not pretty and I made what must be a basic mistake not anticipating the warpage caused by the heat even to a 12...

Haha thought about that also but intercooler, oil cooler and PAS cooler in front of the rad.
The downpipe is going to be difficult to route so the main reason to move the turbo is for that.

Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Thanks Dave, I did look at that but the pictures dont really show how far forward it is and the angle into the turbo is to sharp, I might also be able to get a bit more space for the 3" downpipe putting the turbo nearer the block with a slight twist. http://rovervitesse.com/Rover%20Vitesse%20exhaust...

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Using exhaust clamps, threaded rod and mole grips pulled it pretty much into position and tacked it together http://rovervitesse.com/Rover%20Vitesse%20exhaust%201m.jpg It will need a bit of tidying up with a burr but the match is quite good. The original manifold transition from flange to primary is...

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
The flange isnt perfect either and needs a bit of work to match the ports http://rovervitesse.com/Rover%20Vitesse%20exhaust%201j.jpg Used the old gasket to match the shape. http://rovervitesse.com/Rover%20Vitesse%20exhaust%201k.jpg Tidied up the excess metal as best I could http://rovervitesse.com/R...

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
This is the Nissan manifold (forgot to take a picture before I cut it up) http://rovervitesse.com/Rover%20Vitesse%20exhaust%201e.jpg So I cut the excess flange away leaving plenty of metal around the pipe to allow for some manipulation and to space it out from the cylinder head. http://rovervitesse....

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
The old Rover has been sat idle since last year but finally got some time to get back on it. The exhaust manifold looks horrible, quotes of £1500 for a custom manifold made it difficult to justify so going to have a go at adapting a £200 Nissan manifold to fit the Rover. Engine bay with the stand ou...

Re: bumpers anyone
Good find.
Yes same thoughts about the distance for me, I want one but Im in Surrey.
I would be interested in a MkII front bumper to experiment with so if someone does bring a load down and they are not damaged I am a very likely customer.

Top right, "Classic Leyland grain in black" would be the natural choice for mine. Range of colours down the page for your Sterling.

Re: Is anyone breaking a MK2 fastback without a sunroof?
I wish you had not done that, I dismissed the idea immediately, vinyl roofs on 90's cars cannot work but then looked at your link and got all sorts of colour ideas going through my head now. Also saves a full respray. I came to the conclusion just the roof panel in black vinyl would look best, not o...

Re: Is anyone breaking a MK2 fastback without a sunroof?
Thanks for the info Gordon, I suspected it is a rare thing. Rimmers have a part number but no stock.
I wanted to avoid fitting a metal insert panel then all the flatting work involved, I doubt you would ever get it so it is not obvious, especially at eye level.
But might have to go that route.

Wanted MK2 fastback non sunroof roof. D Shaft Window reg +
I dont remember seeing any but were there any 5 door fastback Mk2's without a sunroof? I am considering replacing the roof panel, I am fed up with leaks and constant maintenance required of the perspex panel. The latest bodge/fix is black dome head bolts holding it down, it looks terrible and still ...
