Re: Charles' early 92 827 manual coupe
Apologies Dave for the late reply. I meant to buy a battery hydrometer today but I didnt get time. What I have done is fitted a brand new (qa tested) Varta Silver Battery (77AH) from a local motor factor. £85.50.. very good price. However while the car seems happier to start, its not been the case e...

Re: Charles' early 92 827 manual coupe
Since I took the battery charger off two days ago, (around 95% full charge) the car does not crank any better from cold. However its still fine after a run. This morning, ive put the charger back on at work. As far as I can tell, the needle has dropped back to roughly the same position as the first ...

Re: Charles' early 92 827 manual coupe
Interesting write up of this mod Dave.
Would it be possible to change the alternator to a different specification to get similar results that you've got since this mod?

One that says 'Trade Club Battery' The sticker on the top end reads the technical points. Nowhere that I can see does it read calcium or lead types. The pa...

Re: Charles' early 92 827 manual coupe
Yes Dave, there is alot more to what I already put earlier. It's a complex science for me and one which I didnt really have time to get into. I remember ohms law as an engineering student but I never since put that to good use. Thanks for taking the time to fully write about this subject ! Anyway, I...

Re: Charles' early 92 827 manual coupe
I just re-read what I typed on that subject of alternators and I see now I came across rather senselessly.. Just by putting into Google what an alternator does, this is the search result; - An automotive charging system is made up of three major components: the battery, the voltage regulator and an ...

Re: Charles' early 92 827 manual coupe
That's an excellent price considering the higher 78ah output.
I guess whatever the amp rating, the alternater will utilize a set amount of current before it shuts on/off ?
There seems to be many different and conflicting theorys about the workings of alternators floating around the internet.

Re: Charles' early 92 827 manual coupe
If they're going to do it properly, they'll charge the battery before testing it. You can't test a flat/half-flat battery, it's likely to blow up. That means they need it for a few hours to charge the battery. However, don't waste your money on a Bosch battery. Compare these two batteries : https:/...

Re: Charles' early 92 827 manual coupe
Is it a calcium battery Charles? If so, you might find that the battery is still ok and the "problem" is actually the car, specifically the alternator. It was designed for a plain lead-acid battery, calcium technology replaces the lead-antimony coating on one set of plates with silver-calcium. Calc...

Re: Charles' early 92 827 manual coupe
Today I had an initial thought about my battery going bad. Because in the last week, I've had a delayed start upon cranking. Normally the car fires into life instantly from cold. I used the car this morning and it was slow to start again (but not as bad as last night) The battery is fortunately stil...

Re: Mk2 interior
I'll have to buy some Milliput. My dad use to use it on his radio controlled model air craft and tamiya radio controlled trucks back in the mid 80's. The repairs were long lasting. It's a pity he didnt keep some of his models longer, they are worth a small fortune now..when they appear on Ebay or Gu...
