Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux

https://i.postimg.cc/0jqjVF0M/20210613-121617.jpg In the mean time, I've swapped the pulley from the Land Rover tensioner on to the old tensioner. All good, nice and quiet tensioner. Thanks Rich! https://i.postimg.cc/85vsBNMg/20210613-121642.jpg And that's a £15 tensioner next to a £150 tensioner.

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux

I've already ordered the 'correct' pulley, despite how much Rimmers' approach to p+p winds me up. I've been running the correct 6 rib belt on it for the entire time I've owned it, perpetually wondering why it was shredding belts roughly once a year. I had even been able to see that belts weren't sit...

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux

Rimmers list two different pulleys for the T series:

https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-PQR10065

and

https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-PQR10054

I wonder if the final digit of the part number indicates the number of ribs, and that I've got the non-air con alternator pulley.

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux

Interestingly, I've discovered another issue whilst the car sits with no alternator belt on. It looks to me like I've got the wrong pulley on the alternator. It's only got 4 ribs, where as everything else has 5

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux

I mean the un-sprung pulley! Hoping it can be swapped over, bearing and all.

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux

Yes Dave, exactly that. Ok, good news at least. And no, no noise.

Next thing to do is probably swap the pulley over from my new one on to the old tensioner body and see what happens..

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux

Not been able to find any issue with the tensioner pulley as yet, but what do we think about the play in the power steering pump?

No lateral movement in the pulley whatsoever, and there's resistance when turning by hand (as you'd expect, what with it being a pump!)

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux

Richard - that's a bloody good question! Especially pertinent, because when I gloomily brought the car down off the ramps, the banging had partially diminished, and I can't imagine a circumstance where the spring could be somehow re-tensioned, whereas I definitely CAN imagine that a pulley can be in...

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux

Ughh! So close. I'm guessing it is niether possible nor desirable to either remove and manufacture a new lug (alloy housing?) nor replace the rear element? I don't know if someone with greater engineering skills than mine could open the casting and maybe drill a new locating lug. The rear element r...

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux

Unfortunately, there's a void where you'd need to drill a new hole https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID005017 And there's no way to get the Land Rover unit fitted without compressing the tensioner spring, and the amount of deflection, even in a shorter belt, would still drop back on top of the air co...

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux

https://i.postimg.cc/TPjZ7b26/Inked20210605-170818-LI.jpg Basically, the units are identical, except for the placement of the locating peg. The red dot shows (approx) where it is on the T-series. Because it's slightly higher on the Land Rover version, the tensioner is slightly rotated and the pulle...

As we have the same model, please do.

I'm guessing the Lux variant is quite a bit rarer than the 'standard' as a lot of people seem to prefer the Recaro seats.
Well, the verdict is in - and it's infuriating.

It doesn't fit, but because of one tiny factor (photo to follow)

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux

Yes - me included :d

But you're right, it is quite a bit rarer. If I could get a standard grey Vitesse interior (including an early airbag-less dash), I'd jump at it and happily let the cream leather and purple carpets go to a loving home.

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux

So, that tensioner, ERR6951 (https://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/err6951-tensioner-for-timing-belt-td5-90110-and-discovery-2.html) fits the 800 T16 Vitesse with aircon? It's worth just getting one in, methinks. And for those that are old enough, I wonder if he's still with Fanny (I bet he's not heard...

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux

That's fantastic, thank you Richard.

I actually saw that thread (doing a similar exercise to you), but I totally misread it - I thought they were talking purely about the pulley wheel, not the actual tensioner itself.

Cracking find, thank you
