Rover 820 si

Post by kab147 » Mon Nov 28, 2011 6:37 pm

Hi, I'm new to this site. Own a 1995 Rover 820 si, White Gold and need to know from you guys the best place to get spares?? I'm having a few problems now. recently had the Door Handle break on the drivers side (Common I Hear). Can anyone tell me if you can replace the actual handle with a back door one?? (just the hand pull)
Thanks, Karl :D

Welcome to the forum Karl - and I think you'll find that the answer to your question is "no".

Welcome to the site.

The rear handles are shallower. They occupy the same space but other than that are different.

Thank you Richard, Nice to be on board! i'm just having a hard time getting a replacement, and as they all look the same, i'd have just taken them apart and swapped them round. Any recommendations?? :)

Thanks for the warning Chris! I wasn't far away from taking the rear panels off!!!! I'm gonna try to keep this lovely car on the road, so any advice on parts and things to be wary of would be greatly appreciated! :)

Isn't the actual pull bit the same ? The offside rear handle broke on my white car and when some scrote tried to steal the car by hammering a screwdriver past the lock, I asked the garage to save the intact handle for me with the intention of replacing just that bit on it's own. If anyone needs a photo of said item I'll put one up.

Rimmer Brothers had new handles available - £65 though.

Please note: mk1 and mk2 handles are different but Rimmers don't usually list mk1 stuff (pre-1992). When they say "early 800" they mean pre-facelift mk2, not mk1.

Good question, the whole units vary in depth but I guess it's possible the lifting part could be the same?

I packed all my spare handles up the other day typically or I'd have offered to pull a couple apart to try it.

Thanks for all the info guys, I tried Rimmers and they said they'd been out of stock since September! also many other breakers etc. think i'm gonna risk takin a rear door panel off to see if the Handle pull is the same. If so, Bingo! if not ......HELP!!!!! I don't suppose the 600 had the same handle did it??
Cheers, Karl

Rover 800 Door Snapping Door Handles!

Post by kab147 » Wed Nov 30, 2011 3:23 pm

For anybody who needs to know, all rover 800 Door Handle pulls are the same and are compatible with front, and rear door Handle assembly's.
So if your Driver or Front passenger Door Handle Pull breaks, swap it with a rear door. Just means taking the door panel off. didn't have too many problems with this, other than rusty screws! This will get it through the MOT!

Belated welcome Karl! Handy to know about the handles!

A good source of used spares is Greengingers and he's not far from you in Basingstoke. I've had a few spares from him including a White Gold (the best colour IMHO!) drivers door outer handle and matched IR fob and "pyramid" for the central locking/alarm. All good so far!

Other than that it's keep you eyes on the frum in the cars and parts for sale section, put a wanted ad in the wanted section or other ebay breakers. Be careful with other ebay breakers though as a lot of them seem to have come quite late to the 800s and if you read their listings you can tell they know as much about Rover 800s as i do about Quantum Physics! Sod All in other words!

If you ever need a brake master cylinder i'm pretty sure the MGF unit will fit yours (i know it fits the 827s) but you need to make sure if you have ABS the MGF had ABS and if yours doesn't then the MGF needs not to have too! Did that make sense? :?

Only Rover 600 parts i know will fit the 800 are the door pillar switches and the 3rd brake light from a 600 will fit saloon 92-96 800s. Other parts may fit but those are the ones i know will fit.
Cheers,
Dave
