Sadly not. :( Although that pushes up the price/value of cars that are still in good condition. :)

Today I swapped the connector.
Image
Following Mr Paul's advice, I used NT cutter (simillar to stanley knife) and managed to peel off the black insulation without touching the 3 wires inside.
Soldered each of them in line and covered with layers of heat shrinks.

Put it back and
IT WORKED
Now the speedo works as it should!
(I didn't hit the dash board this time  )

Thank you very much for you guys' generous help and encouragement especially Paul, Dave and Phil!

I have to confess that I didn't try it on street.
Jack up the front (err, the one with modded transducer), engage gear while engine running and checked if the speedo works or not.
So, it may not be accurate but hey speedo's MOT tolerance is +/- 15% or so anyway!

Does the job!

Just for your information, the speedo tolerance is a bit tighter than +/- 15%. Legally you're allowed 10% at 30mph and i belive the same at 70mph. In practice the 800 speedo is much closer to the truth than that.
On my coupe, my satnav displays 67mph @ 70mph indicated and my saloon shows 68mph on the satnav @ 70mph indicated. That said, the front tyres on my saloon are fairly worn and once i fit the new tyres they will in effect gain something like 12-14mm in diameter so should be almost exactly accurate if not a little fast, i.e. at an indicated 70mph i mayb in fact be doing 72mph for example. I'll find out when i renew the tyres!
Interestingly the coupe front tyres are much less worn but the speedo is further out, however still well within the 10% tolerance allowed by law.
Cheers,
Dave

Speedo isn't an MOT item anyway. So they won't care.

Purely for your own benefit really.

I've never known an 800 be that accurate speedo wise. Always around 10% out in my experience.

Yep - they always over read in my experience. Fitting slightly taller tyres will help a bit - fitting something like 215/65 rather than 205/65 for example.

I remember when the front tyres on my Sterling were near-new, the satnav registered between 69-71mph @ 70mph indicated - maybe i'm just lucky or perhaps at some time in it's life it was calibrated. There's no "official" calibration mark on it but hey, some owners might have been fussy! The speedo on the coupe seems a lot further out though.

Anyway, more importantly, the speedo is in fact now part of the MoT Test. There's quite a lot that's new in there including steering lock, towbars, fore/aft adjustment of drivers seat and many others.
Cheers,
Dave

That list doesn't actually say that its performance will be checked - just its presence, condition (cracked glass etc) and illumination.

Very true, however when i had the coupe MoT'd back in August, the tester hinted to me the speedo would be checked for operation. Whether this just checks the mileage is increasing betwen tests (inc retests) or whether they now have to drive the car a short distance or what i don't know. I'll find out sometime soon as the Sterling is due it's test early next month.

Whether or not the MoT requires the speedo to indicate your speed or not, with the amount of speed-detection equipment in the money grabbing paws of various councils, road safety groups etc i think it's a good idea to have it working anyway.
Cheers,
Dave

Didn't know they'd done that, with not having as much to do with cars day to day lately I haven't taken much interest if I'm honest.

Definitely a good idea. No question. Not fun when they don't work.

Not too bad in a manual, I had one gone in a Vitesse for a while. I just checked where the revs were in each gear for 30 MPH. No clue how you'd manage in an auto though?

Same method, just got more of a "buffer" because of the torque converter at least until it gets to the lock up point. By then you can just go revs for speed though.

Alternatively like RIchard says, use the satnav or even your mobile phone as most have satnavs on these days. If you're not using them for navigation then the only external "input" is from the satellites so you don't use any data using the satnav as a speedo.

True, awkward not being were you'd want it though.
