Centre console wood veneer

Post by Manalishi » Mon Nov 20, 2017 4:11 pm

Hi folks,
if there is anyone out there who will be stripping their centre console in the near future I would be very interested in the wood/veneer. The pieces around the clock and the gear lever is really greyish and they are unlikely to improve from a polish and respray with a clear cote. So if you find anything, send me a PM.

Cheers!

I've got a manual gear lever surround Henrik and i think the rest of the centre console wood bits, i'll have a dig around and see what i can find for you.

Polish and clear-coat won't bring it back up, i'm trying some rubbing paste to take the "milky/grey" out of the lacquer at the moment on one bit of wood, it's a very slow, painstaking process though! Still unsure if it will work or not.
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks Dave, please check! The pieces around the dash/ac-unit is ok but the lower pieces, clock/strip/ashtray and gear lever is terrible! Just as you say, milky and grey.

It's really difficult to fix the veneer on an 800 as the "lacquer" is actually a hard plastic coating that is pressed onto the wood and metal using heat.

I have spoken to a professional veneer restorer who gave me a quote of £50-100 for the clock surround. A price that is too steep while decent second-hand parts are still available.

Thanks Phil and Dave. My wood is quite dark but I dont mind if the parts are lighter. Also if you have the newer doorstrips with ”Rover” on them, I would consider that.

Tom, I did sand the strip (under the clock) to see what happened but as you say, it’s a very thick layer! Not worth the hazzle as second hand units are available.

Isn't it all plastic, not real wood veneer? The bits around the clock and ashtray certainly seem like plastic and on my car are not faded/milky, but the climate control surround, which does seem like real, veneer, is faded/milky.

No it’s real veneer, but the thick glossy layer makes it look a bit plastic-like.

Dave and Phil,
I've managed to find some centre consol bits over here ( I forgot about the fact that my friend Gunnar had spare cars!) so that will be sorted, but do you have any strips for the doors? (4-door saloon). I would really like the newer ones with the Rover stripe, but that´s not entirely necessary!

That's good news Henrik - not sure if you know but the manual and automatic gear lever surrounds are different and won't fit the other way if you get what i'm trying to say.

I will have a set of door cappings some time soon but they don't have the Rover logo on, they're also a little faded/milky but not as bad as the rest of the wood from the same car.
Cheers,
Dave

I didn’t know the gear shifter surround was different, but that’s ok as Gunnars is a manual!
If possible add a pic of the door pieces when you have them please. Mine are ”ok” but could be better.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Good news Henrik - while looking for something else in the garage i moved a set of door cards that came from a low mileage 98 825Si and discovered the door cards do in fact have the full set of the wood cappings complete with "ROVER" logo and line in gold.

I've got computer problems at the moment so uploading the pics might take some time (not to mention the fact i didn't have my phone with me to take the pics when i found them) so bear with me but they are all in good condition.

Just need to figure out how to remove them from the door cards so i can send them............... :D
Cheers,
Dave
