There's a couple on fleabay Dave, doesn't have if they're from A/C cars or not but most had it. Also aren't the heater matrices the same across the range as long as it's A/C or non-A/C that you get it from?

In other words, if you get one from any A/C car it should fit any other A/C car, similar for non-A/C fitting other non-A/C.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ROVER-800-MK ... XQM0FRfjHo

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-827-19 ... SwUchaFrwP

There's also a few new ones listed for 820s with A/C so if my theory about them being the same is right that would be an option too.

https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-CDU3589

Rimmers list (and stock) that one for the non-ATC air-con, i supsect it's the same as for ATC A/C cars except for how the flaps are controlled. Can't find the aftermarket ones on fleabay at the moment but they were on there a few days ago as i spotted them while trying to find a radiator for mine.
Cheers,
Dave

Dave the two you list from ebay are both non aircon which is CDU3589, as listed by Rimmers as Non ATC. Trouble is they don't list the air con version, if I could remember how to put pictures up I could show you the difference :D

No worries Dave, that was all i could find last night. Sorry they weren't any help to you!

As i mentioned, i found loads for the 2.0 with A/C which should still be the same heater matrix as the 2.7 with A/C as long as both had ATC but those for the 2.0 seem to have disappeared just lately.

I'll keep looking as i'm still looking for a radiator for mine, if anything turns up on ebay i'll post it here for you.

At least with the warmer weather coming (at last!) you could if needs be bypass the heater matrix until you find one! :D

Dave

I could by pass but the car is already stripped down and you'll appreciate it's some considerable stripping that needs to be done to get to the matrix. Still at least the anti-freeze soaked carpets and underlay are all clean now. Its just very frustrating that having thought I'd bought the part in readiness it turned out to be the wrong one. Thanks anyway Dave.

Ah, i thought you had a leaky matrix and were getting one in readiness - i'm a few steps behind!

Pain in the ar5e if you've already stripped it out though, it's not a five minute job! I did have one a couple of years back from a KV6 with A/C and ATC but that's long gone, as is the rad from the same car which i did think about at the time to fit in my Sterling with an external ATF cooler, should have done it when i had the chance!

Hindsight is a wonderful but generally useless tool!  :D

This is the matrix Dolly is after. The brass one on the right. The black part is incorrect which is CDU3589

Thanks Steve - i'll keep my eyes peeled on fleabay, i haven't got one of any description.

If that's the one that is actually leaking, as it's brass could it not be resoldered? :?:

Dave

Try a proper radiator repair specialist - in much the same way as they can recore a radiator, they should be able to do the same for the heater matrix. If not, they may be able to find a suitable alternative matrix and fit the original (or alternative) connections.

I used Wolverhampton Radiators for my MG - and as I walked into the reception, carrying the radiator, the chap said "that's from an MGC". He was right, and I hadn't even warned him I was coming. He was making up MGRV8 aircon condensors from scratch - so a matrix should be a doddle.

It's all too easy to forget about the repair option - the 21st century approach is often just to replace, but often the currently available parts can be of low quality and have a limited lifespan. You will also be doing your bit to support local craftsmen and women rather than overseas factory workers.

That's a very valid point Richard - trouble is finding one these days! I tried my local (30 ish miles away) radiator "specialist when i first noticed the leak from my Sterling rad only to be told they wouldn't repair it, just replace it. :(

As you say, we're living in a disposable society and the quality of replacements is below what the quality was when the new parts were fitted to our cars. Because of all this, many craftsmen have gone out of business, people want it now, if not sooner and if not, why not?

I dread to think what will happen in 10 or 20 years time when the last of the craftsmen have not only gone out of business but have past retirement age - nobody to pass those skills onto either!
Cheers,
Dave

Hi all, and thanks for all your help and suggestions. Thought I'd update this to help those in the future and comment on the situation now.
Aaron radiators and a guy called Demisterman both stock the non air con matrix(the black one in the picture) as do Rimmer bros for anywhere between £60 and £100 including postage, I bought the one above for £41 off ebay under a generic part number and checked with the vendor it was for an aircon model, it clearly wasn't. CDU3589 is being quoted in different places for both matrix so be careful. Some rad places like the one Simon found will recon and the price will largely depend on the work required but budget about £110 (may 2018), the aircon matrix is brass and extremely soft so be careful not to crush the pipes on removal, it's easily done.
Thanks to Steve (rovercoup) and a search of the Xpart network it revealed just one left in the whole network but still quoted CDU3589 as the part number, I asked them to email me a picture and it was the brass aircon one, last quoted price of £401.00. When the parts guy told me how much he wanted for it lets just say it was my lucky day.
The black non aircon matrix has now been returned for refund but like I say those are readily available at the moment.
