There's a JDM Import with the 2.5 Honda engine on ebay :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1988-ROVER-8 ... 4019636741

That's in Wigan and appears to be in very good condition for a Mk1 - it should be having lived in Japan most of its life! It's running early Honda Legend wheels with Rover centre caps, presumably standard fit in Japan. The speedo reads in kmh up to 180kmh (112mph) so could well be restricted to that as a top speed as well, i think (but not sure) there were certain laws in Japan about cars not being able to exceed that speed. Also you may have to change the radio as it probably won't pick up on our wavebands, even though they use FM and AM as well, they use different frequencies etc.

There's also a very early Mk2 827 SLi on a J reg so literally one of the first Mk2 models in Oswestry :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1992-rover-8 ... 4123939940

The main obvious differences betwen the SLi and Sterling are Cruise Control and leather seats so may be an option for you.

Why do you specifically want a Mk1 Sterling and are you after the 2.5 or 2.7? :?
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave

I love the shape of the Mk1 and the interior of the Stirling far better in my opinion than the later ones . More tech shall we say lol . I’m told the 2.7 is the one to go for but I’m open to either just want as clean a model I can get . I missed a two tone white one a few years ago and have been locking myself ever since

Swings and roundabouts on the amount of tech in the Mk1 Sterling Chris against the Mk2, the only real extra bits you might get are the VCM, Trip Computer and maybe the reclining rear seats but those are pretty much dependent on when exactly it was built.

The big problem with Mk1 Sterlings is a lot of them have now been consumed by tinworm and those that haven't are unlikely to be sold any time soon. Yes, they do come up but very rarely.

The 2.7 is the better engine as you suggest, it has the variable length indcution on the inlet manifold which is a real boost to power and torque over the 2.5 and you get a gearbox with Sports mode on the 2.7 as well. It has a "limited" winter mode as well in as much as if you put it in "2", it pulls away in 2nd reducing wheelspin. It's up to you to change up to the hgher ratios by moving the lever though.
Cheers,
Dave

Hi guys

Can any one see any disadvantages to buying a Japanese spec car . Apparently paperwork is straight forward , I can’t imagine insurance would be much different . Obviously Speedo is on kmh which I could possibly get changed if I could find the right speedo and the radio.

Check the insurance cost first before you commit to anything. Is it the round speedo? If so i have a spare speedo that should work.

As for the radio, hard to say, i think ARG as they were at the time were using their bespoke connectors so you may need a patch lead from Autoleads or similar to plug a DIN/ISO connector unit in, the Mk2 had ISO connectors anyway so not a problem on them.

Dave
