Alternate Brake Master Cylinder
I had difficulty getting a new master cylinder for my 820. I found these from and MGTF 500 which seem the same apart from the hydraulic feed to the clutch from the reservoir. That (reservoir) could be transferred from the old one I suppose.
Anyone know if the TF 500 could be adapted?

Re: Alternate Brake Master Cylinder
I think you'll have to be a pioneer on this one Scott! Don't forget though, just because it looks the same on the outside, it doesn't always follow on the inside - SJC10007 and SJC10005(?) look the same but the first is for ABS the second non-ABS.
Just looked up the clutch hydraulics on an MG TF :

I'll let you draw your conclusions but i think i know what they will be!

Re: Alternate Brake Master Cylinder
I think I'm correct in saying that the only genuinely critical element that needs to match up is the number of hydraulic connections, and the bore size of the master cylinder. Everything else could theoretically be adapted (eg connection threads, reservoir locations).
Doesn't answer your question though, I appreciate!

Re: Alternate Brake Master Cylinder
That's the point i was making Adrian, it's possible to fit a non-ABS master cylinder directly in place of an ABS one but because of the internals, they are different and won't necessarily work correctly.mercedade wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 3:29 pmI think I'm correct in saying that the only genuinely critical element that needs to match up is the number of hydraulic connections, and the bore size of the master cylinder. That's why i don't know if the Chinese master cylinder (as fitted to late MG TFs) is similar in operation to the SJC10007 which was the original Rover 800 ABS unit (except KV6 models, they had a different master cylinder mounted on the left with a cantilever system to transmit the brake pedal travel) so difficult to say.

Re: Alternate Brake Master Cylinder
Still having issues getting a replacement Master Cylinder. The one I just received has a cast body and is too thick for the servo mount. It was LM60516 and the ad stated "Fits Rover 800 2.0 1998." - No it doesn't!
SJC1007 does not have a "cast" body but plate steel which fits the mount. Land Rover Disco ones look similar. Anyone ever sourced a rebuild kit?
This looks very similar:

Re: Alternate Brake Master Cylinder
The LM60516 does fit the 820 Scott - just nothing as modern as what you have!
If memory serves, they were fitted to the very early (1986-7) non-ABS models, despite them being listed for ABS-equipped cars.
I can't remember the details now, but fairly certain the very early brake systems weren't ABS at all and also that it was changed fairly soon after.

Re: Alternate Brake Master Cylinder
Bigg Red have a rebuild kit. I don't know what make the master cylinder is?
Reply below:
To be honest the only kit we have listed for the Rover 800 is our part number BRM1640 £18.66
This kit is for a Lucas master cylinder with a 23.8mm internal bore.
If you have a lucas master cylinder with a 23.8mm bore there is a chance it will be suitable but you will need to double check your cylinder.

Re: Alternate Brake Master Cylinder
The master cylinder bore is 23.81mm according to the Rover WSM Scott. I'm fairly sure it is a Lucas master cylinder (which could include Girling) so have a look and see if there are any identifying marks on the M/C to see if you can confirm that.
As long as Bigg Red can confirm the seal kit is suitable for ABS models, you should be ok with it.

Re: Alternate Brake Master Cylinder
Thanks Dave!
I have another second hand one coming from MGNTFBITS for a reasonable £15 so I think I'll order a seal kit to rebuild the original for a spare or for any other distressed Rover 800 owners. As it is fitted to MGTF and Rover 800, I'd have thought there would be loads out there?

Re: Alternate Brake Master Cylinder
There are probably quite a few out there Scott, trouble is they're either on cars that are in use orhave been lost to the crusher.
Hopefully the new one will be intact and you can get the brakes sorted again.

I am watching this with a keen interest! I'm hoping this is the weekend I get to the bottom of my own disappearing brakes

Re: Alternate Brake Master Cylinder
Ha! I have a "universal" one that doesn't fit. It sort of works if you have someone holding it... Just got a text saying it will be delivered around noon today.scoobyh123 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 11, 2021 5:08 pmFingers crossed now Scott! Just need a pressure bleeder now................

Re: Alternate Brake Master Cylinder
I've got one of those too. Once the weather warms up enough so i can get back in my shed, i'll finish the few little outstanding jobs then the next project will be to design and make a cap that fits the reservoir and holds itself on.
