17" Alloys and tyres - £45 for the set

Post by mercedade » Mon Jul 06, 2015 7:50 pm

Evening all

I was just about to get these stuck on eBay, but thought I'd offer them here before I do.

I bought these as a temporary stop gap whilst my Vitesse wheels were off the road, but now I've resolved my corrosion issues with the originals, I no longer need these.

Image

They aren't the prettiest wheels to be honest, but they come with 4 better-than-legal tyres - tread depths pictured, but I've certainly bought worse part-worn! 2 matched pairs.

4 of the rims are in reasonable condition, one of them is really ropey - I've no idea why it's so bad, but it's pictured anyway. But it holds air and the tyre on the rim is decent.

Full pictures here

http://s1065.photobucket.com/user/abarr ... ary/Wheels - password is 'wheels'.

I don't want much for them - £45 would be fine, and that includes the spacers and the nuts, including the locking wheel nuts and key. Alternatively as an unusual option, I'm open to offers of useful spares and/or an offer of help from a keen welder!

Any questions, let me know

Cheaper than buying 4 decent partworns on their own - these come fitted to their own rims!

No takers, even with an offer? I'm getting grief from the other half to move these on (and desperately trying to avoid ebay into the bargain)

Adrian - any chance you could find out what a courier would charge to deliver them to me please? Also what make of tyres are fitted? I can see one tyre looks like it might be a Falken Zeix ZE-912 but difficult to tell with the shadows/bright parts of the photos.
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Two are Hankook Ventus V12 Evo, and yes the other two are Falken Ziex ZE-912.

A good courier seem to be this outfit http://www.wheelcarrier.co.uk/acatalog/ ... Tyres.html who would charge £38 inc VAT.

If you want me to take any better photos, just let me know

Thanks

If you don't mind hanging on for a few days i can give you a definite yes or no - i need to put my Jeep in for MoT and i genuinely don't know if it's going to pass, pass with advisories, fail on minor bits or fail dismally.
Obviously any sort of fail will alter my financial outlook so i may have to put the refurb of the Sterling wheels on hold, which would be the reason i'd be buying them - same as you really!
Cheers,
Dave

No problem at all Dave - just let me know whenever the Jeep gets through. And good luck!

Hi,

Are these wheels still on the market ?

Was looking for 15" set, but these might be just the ticket for the winter.

Cheers

Brian - if you're going for a set of winter wheels/tyres you really would be better off going for 15s or even 14s with something like 175/14 or 175/70/15.

Although i've never run winter/Mud & Snow tyres myself, i'm reliably informed that "tall & skinny" is the best way to go. The only way to get skinny is to increase the aspect ratio which obviously reduces the width for the same rolling diameter.

Because the 17" wheels are so wide, the minimum width you could safely fit would probably be in the region of 205 section so you'd be looking at 205/50/17 - not exactly skinny! Apparently the narrower tyres "slice" through the snow easier, rather than pushing it up in a lump in front.

Many moons ago when i was just a pup, i had an old Volvo 144 auto with 165/15 tyres and (unbeknown to me at the time) a Limited Slip Differential. We had a bad winter that year and all the modern, front wheel drive cars with their 195+ section tyres couldn't get any grip going up hills or anywhere else for that matter!
Then along came me in a geriatric old Volvo and calmly drove past them all, inlcuding an early Series Land Rover who presumably couldn't find his 4WD engagement as he was slithering all over the place like a demented pinball! Incidentally, he had some extra wide tyres on as well so presumably the bit about skinny tyres is very valid.
Anecdotal evidence i admit, but highly amusing for me at the time!

Talking of Volvos, if you can't find any Rover steel rims to fit some skinny tyres to, 98-02 Volvo S/V40 models use almost exactly the same dimensions on their wheels but you will need a set of 64.1mm - 67.1mm spigot rings so they mount centrally on the hub. After all, you wouldn't want to risk kerbing a nice set of alloys in the snow would you?

Don't let me put you off buying these alloys though, if you want them then go for it! Just please don't use them as winter wheels in case you wreck them!
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Brian,

Yes, there are still available, although I know that Dave has expressed an interest pending his MOT. Dave, are you any closer to being able to confirm?

The wheels+tyres would be perfect for general winter use (after all, that's what I used them for!), but I'd agree with Dave that they wouldn't be much help for churning through snowdrifts if you found yourself in 4 foot of Scottish snow.

If you want me to take any additional pictures, please just let me know.

The Jeep is booked in for tomorrow at 2pm Adrian - by the time the tester has written War & Peace aka the failure sheet i'll probably know some time around 4pm!

Joking aside, it's going to do one of three things - pass (with or without advisories), fail on a few silly bits or fail dismally!

If it fails on a few silly bits that's where the budget could take a hammering but don't stand on ceremony, if Brian wants the wheels then go for it but still wouldn't advise using them this winter as unless i'm very mistaken this one is going to be extremely nasty!
Cheers,
Dave

Adrian - there's good news and bad news. I knew the Jeep would almost certainly need some welding and i had a problem with the emissions that i couldn't get to the bottom of thanks to my Gastester going belly-up. I also had a few minor doubts about the brake system as it had a siezed O/S rear wheel cylinder when i first got it. Although i freed the cylinder off, bled it, renewed the fluid in the entire system and everything seemed right, i wasn't 100% sure everything was right until it got on the rollers at the testing station.

However, the tester sadly didn't have his Mr Magoo head on today (despite my extremely large hints!  ) and spotted the outer sill and a couple of other minor bits (which i hadn't spotted but in fairness were only visible from a certain angle on the ramp) and obviously the emissions were a fail. As such the net result was a failure sheet but not too bad. Three bits of welding (a small hole in the rear end of each sill and the outer sill) and the emissions. Once i could see what they were doing i cured them so it's just down to the welding which i decided to let him do (ain't i kind!!! ) for the princely (or should that be pricey!) sum of £250 which given the work involved isn't bad at all.

Bottom line is i won't have the spare cash to even think about your wheels at the moment, if they don't sell and are still around in a month or two then maybe it will be a different story but i know my heating oil is getting very low as well so even then might not be a possibility.
Cheers,
Dave
