I was being sincere on the colour, I do actually like it. Though that's all.

Not even slightly jealous, I reckon I really should get a proper 800 built. I'll be happy(ier) then.

Go on then Chris, shoot the moon, what is the car you're after? Yes, you are allowed to change your mind later, I know I would.

Most of the cars I'd really like are autos.

Audi A8, BMW 750, looked at 540s the other week as some of them are manual.

I like MG ZTs though I refuse to pay the tax on them if it goes up as planned.

For a Jag I want a V8 XJR with a manual box and black leather.

Forgot one, MK4 Toyota Supra. An old school mates dad had two back when they first new. Do like them.

Well the bigger the engine and, particularly, the bigger the body the more auto boxes you start to find. I like all the big German stuff too but as long as it's old enough that the golf club pillocks will turn their noses up at it. I love ZTs as they're the sort of size I like and an MG but there's no good engine option but the V8 and I can't afford to run one! I would love to try an XJR though.

I looked at the V8s before, too little power out an engine that size though.

I wouldn't say on XJR is a dream car but I've always fancied one. Just something about them for me. Especially in black.

The ZT 260 was always meant to be the base model of a range of custom order cars - like the SV but not as extreme. I doubt Rover would have done you 1000 horsepower one!

There's one on the Exchange and Mart website - although the (poor) interior picture looks like an auto, despite what the listing said. :)

It's an auto, the J gate stands out a mile. Something like an XJR can just as easily do with an auto as a manual as it really is a notch up from the 800. The 800 is an easy call, Sterlings should be auto, Vits should be manual, after that it's down to preference. Still looking for someone who put the VM diesel with an auto box in front wheel drive - probably easier to kick the derv and buy a petrol one!

Chrysler Voyager 2.8 CRD auto. It's the upgraded, common rail version of the VM unit.

Modern autoboxes are usually as quick as the manuals and sometimes quicker (they take less time to change gear). Manual override, sport mode etc are usually great - and very often the manuals have heavy clutches and clunky gearchanges (a criticism usually leveled at the manual versions of Jags).

I've probably mentioned it before.. but a company I used to work for used to pay for space on Unipart's trucks and while logistics network generally. Each day I'd report to my local Rover main dealer every day to pick up various computery bits and to make use of the discount on parts. Happy days. One morning one of the car shuttling blokes came over to me, bursting with some kind of excitement, claiming that he just had to tell someone about this car. It was an early XJR and he was beside himself having driven up from Coventry. Always fancied a go since then, but perhaps it's one of those times when you just leave it alone!

I should have said for the 2.5 - have you seen the 'economy' figures for the 2.8 engine? I'd do better with any of the V6s and have tons more fun!

I wasn't so much thinking of the 2.8 CRD engine as its gearbox - however, it probably has a bundle of electronics which make it incompatible.
