Puddle lights

Post by CHR15E » Thu Apr 18, 2019 5:22 pm

Any use to anyone?

3 bagged as new, never been opened and 1 that looks unused but has marks on the lense.

No idea what they're worth?

I wish i had doors that would take them Chris! I would think anyone with a Mk1 or very early Mk2 could make use of them though, if only as spares.
Cheers,
Dave

Yeah, fair point. I seem to remember seeing a couple of people chopping holes to make them fit in the past?

I think I saved them with the intention of putting them in the trailer at some point. Forgot I had them TBH, been clearing out again and seem to keep finding things.

I have a rubbing strip in a box as well I found earlier. I'll never be free. :D

I had thought of doing that to be honest Chris but didn't want to start hacking my doors about.

Being a Mk2, mine has the bigger puddle lamps in the door cards that are red (not the later smoked ones) which serves duty as a "Door open guard lamp" as well which is how i usually refer to the smaller ones like you've shown. Main reason is that's what i knew them as on a Volvo before i had any Rovers and even my 1988 760 still has almost exactly the same ones as on the 140 i had all those years ago (before this Volvo was even a twinkle of swarf in Mr Volvos eyes! :P  ) so i do sort of miss them on my Sterling.

I'm sure someone will come along with an older 800 in need of some spares though. :D
Cheers,
Dave

I remember the first MK2 I had with the red lights in the door cards and assumed someone had been playing.

Till that point every 800 we'd had was either a MK1 or early MK2.

Just shows how over the years they cut back on bits.

They didn't just cut back on what was fitted Chris, they cut back on the quality of it too! The carpets in the Mk1 are thicker, better quality than the Mk2a and those in turn are better than the Mk2b, likewise with the leather used on the seats. Also the seat frames are made of thinner metal, the motors aren't as beefy and there are several other things i can't think of that aren't as good.

It's not just Rover though. My '88 Volvo alloy wheels had no less than 7 different coatings on from etch primer, filler primer etc through to two coats of clear lacquer. Conversely the wheels on the Sterling ('98 Volvo S40 alloys) have just three - primer, colour and lacquer. It shows all manufacturers were at it, minimising on quality to get maximum profit.

I've often wondered though what the costs of re-tooling were against the cost of continuing to fit the door open guard lights, a rear cig lighter etc. For the rear cig lighter, they created a plastic blank that clicked into place - tooling costs alone to make the mould for that would have paid for many 10s of thousands of cig lighters to be fitted.
The bean-counters said it would be cheaper though.
Cheers,
Dave
