What premise is his theory based on Mark? I can see the logic if the theory is that there will always be one person willing to pay more for the item but missed the auction but that doesn't take into account auctions that attract no bids at all.

Please tell me the statistician isn't called Stuart Goddard?   :D

I don't know Dave, it was some time ago and I'm not sure I fully understood the point at the time, let alone remember the full detail now. The (vague) memory of the conversation was just triggered by other comments on the thread about bidding behaviour.

And no, it wasn't Stuart Goddard - who he?

Stuart Goddard was Adam Ants real name! :D

It sounds like one of those theories that are so convoluted you need several degrees to understand the basics - one in philosophy, another in psychology, a third in psychiatry and a fourth in podiatry to see if the idea has legs!

how will you ever get that insured on an agreed value though, no one would value that car at 10k, its alright being 9000 miles but that car has sat on its wheels for 27 years, even the low miles, everything has been open to the elements for 9k and unless really well valeted, it will have all the moisture ingress etc of cars with similar miles to mine, id like to see the sunroof surround, and drip rails, and arches.

but how though dave, because i can't see how its valued at that, there art many about like this one, none sell for anything near that, so a market value to replace it surely must be a lot lower, id worry like hell if mine was worth half that, because as nice as mine is, i leave it on me mums drive n don't worry about it, because its not worth stealing, if 827s turn into mk2 escorts I'm gonna brick mine up in a room for 20 years so no one nicks it.

Values have been on the rise for a while now Matt, slow and steady mostly but a few rare beasties like these are getting silly money. Or at least what we would have called silly money a few months ago.

Look back over time to the SD1 and the P6, both of those "enjoyed" a period of time when they couldn't be given away then values started to climb and they went through banger territory and kept climbing. Now even a rough example of either is well over a grand. I'm sure (as i have been in the past that 800 values would rise) that we will see the same for 800s, it started with the Sterling/Vitesse/Coupé models and is now spreading to the more "run of the mill" models.

Apparently Adrian Flux value any 800 as a minimum of £2000 for insurance, given Nicks (Zcar2) recent experience with them i doubt i'll recommend them but those that have been with them a while have been happy.

Think about it though Matt, virtually all 800s that are left now have had a lot of time and/or money invested in them, whether that's in dry, secure storage to keep them looking factory fresh or on bodywork and mechanicals, most will have needed a cam belt/water pump change at some point, those that haven't been done and are still out there will need that doing soon and other mechanical work to bring them up to scratch. If they've been done then the price will reflect that, if not any prospective purchaser will have to budget for it but a wise seller will get it done and add it to the price.

That said, if you were to sell yours now, having done a lot of work to bring it to a certain standard, you'd also need to do (or at least check) the work on a replacement to get it to the same standard. Take my Coupé as an example, i've done a lot on that to get it to where it is now, it's not perfect but at 5 paces it is perfect and i've been offered £5k for it. There will always be something that needs doing, same as on any car but the cam belt, water pump, anti freeze, ATF etc are all good. Next job is the brake fluid when i finish making the adaptor to go in the reservoir to use the Gunsons Eezi-Bleed. That's a service item though so i'm perhaps being over-picky. I've also had one of the sills done (the other new one is warm and dry in the airing cupboard for when it's needed) but if i had taken mateys £5k, what would i have done?

If i'd bought another Coupé for £700 on ebay (there were a few around at the time) i would have spent the remaining £4300 getting that up to standard, possibly more.

With these "big money" cars on ebay, the mileage is so low you'd think it wouldn't need a cam belt etc but they do, it's 96k miles or 8 years on the C27 engine, whichever comes first. There's a reason for the time limit as well.

Bottom line is if you've done things like the cam belt, water pump, checked the brakes, anti freeze and so on and it all looks good, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to get several grand for it now. Get it polished up, take some decent pics and get your agreed valuation of £10k sooner rather than later! :D
Cheers,
Dave

bloody hell, I've done cam belt water pump, full service all fluids, new drop links, new shocks springs brakes all round stainless lines, ball joints, new leads, loads of stuff, laser alignment, refurbd prestiges, matched goodyear tyres all round, its like driving a new one, gonna hide mine now, I'm getting a complex, gonna make my dad sleep in it to look after it now.

good news they are going up, but if they get to 5-10k there won't be anybody left on here with one cos surely most guys would sell up.

Obviously i can't speak for others on here but the feeling i get from most people is the same as mine, we bought them because we like them and that's why the work has been done. I don't think there's any of us that would want to find another vehicle as comfortable etc and i doubt we could do it even with £5-10k - besides, that vehicle would devalue so we'd have to wait another 20 years before that started going up in value. Just wouldn't make sense to me to sell the cars that have got so much of me in them in favour of getting some cash and what would basically be a banger with a newer registration. Good way of losing both the money and a car!

Dave

I guess it all depends on whether you plan to use the cars as daily transport? Eventually I would think most will become Sunday use only cars as time goes on?
