Think I've seen that motor before....

Certainly seen the DOB reg plate before

Don't look too bad though, little bit of work for someone and could be a well tidy motor

It's OAT coolant Nick or to give it its full name, Organic Acid Technology coolant. Unless the system has been meticulously purged of the blue or green ethylene-glycol stuff, the two don't mix. Well they do in a way and form a gel which blocks various water channels, it has also been known to attack gaskets and seals on pre-2000 vehicles with disastrous results!

Have a look at this thread here, you'll see what i mean :

http://rover800.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=14056

Nightmare of a job! Trouble is once it's in there, if it has gelled with any of the ethylene-glycol the damage is already done. :D

Dave

Most likely been running on it from new so won't be an issue.

My other halfs 2006 Astra 1.8 petrol has it in as does my Mondeo. Both without issue........So far. :)

What i said earlier! ^^^^^ Anything made from about 2000 onwards is pretty much safe, there are probably exclusions out there but i don't know of any. :D

Understood, the wifes Alhambra has red stuff in too.

Talking of attacking seals, and going off topic slightly what's the group thought on Tesco Super unleaded or Momentum as its known given its got 10% ethanol in it. Is it likely to cause problems to hoses and such? Compared to other super fuels its pretty cheap especially when Shell want 12p a litre more for their version!!

Pay the extra for decent branded fuel! Shell V-Power Nitro Plus or whatever it's called this week or BP Ultimate will both give you more power and economy than the Tesco stuff and once the engine retunes itself to the better petrol, the savings outweigh the costs. One of the other forums i infest has a very long thread on the subject of supermarket fuels Vs branded and the two best come out as BP Ultimate and Shell V-Power Nitro - even the Esso version is pretty poor in comparison.

If you had a 2.7 i'd say BP Ultimate, i'm not so sure on the T series, Shell might be better although my last T series went extremely well on BP Ultimate. :D

Dave

Bizarrely, the BP garage I use on the A31 only sells standard diesel and unleaded, no super versions of either. I'll try and stick some BP Ultimate in next time Im in Wimborne and see how it goes!

Typical!

Some BP stations are franchises and don't always carry the "full range" of stock which is why there are a lot around that have never had LPG and since BPs decision to no longer provide LPG, even the non-franchised ones no longer stock it.
Same goes for the Ultimate versions of unleaded and diseasel.

It's a pain in the posterior for us motorists but there you go.
Cheers,
Dave

I thought all petrol stations were franchise.
they say they make hardly anything on the fuel.

That's why they are always trying to flog you bars of chocolate and overprice coffee.

I can't speak for "non-BP" as i don't know but i emailed BP when they stopped selling LPG ("Autogas" as they insisted on calling it) to find out why some stations had it when others were telling me the company (BP) had said they weren't to sell it anymore and also to protest they weren't selling it.

The reply basically stated some stations were franchised and those may still have Autogas as it came from an external supplier but was sold under the BP name. Those franchised stations would have to rebrand their Autogas to something else (i think they said Flogas as that was the supplier, might be wrong, going from memory and can't find the email) if they wished to continue selling it.

It also explains why some BP stations have something like a Budgens, M&S or similar attached. :D

Dave

If you want your car to have a long life, don't use supermarket fuel.
