Be watchful of the belt noise it says.
I'll have some wings soon if you need them.

Re: Rover 800 Turbo diesel 825 SDI 2.5 1998 saloon
If this were a fastback, I'd be on it in a second.
As Chris says, the aux belt tensioner is a worry.
IIRC the spring loaded part is prone to seizing and throwing the belt and is a Rover specific part so almost impossible to get now. I remember someone designed a replacement part a few years back. That would be my major concern. Most of the other mechanical parts are interchangeable with other VM powered cars and are still freely available. I'd buy it with the forethought that I might have to pay to get that part re-engineered and would do it with some urgency if I won the car.
The other thing to consider is the clutch as the 825s eat them. They are good for 100-140k max. I'd ask how high the clutch is as they are big bucks or a major job to replace. If it feels like high biting point, it's likely on the way out. I'd ask the seller about it.
Early ones run great on veggie oil (pm me for more info). The later ones have an ECU and will still run on veggie oil but with a weaker mix. I can't remember which year they changed but I think it was around '96.
I sold my 825s at 150k and 193k, both still running. They are surprisingly quick (not far off an 827), incredibly torquey and very simple to work on for the most part. They can also be tuned fairly easily for better economy and performance. Expect around 38mpg day to day, 43mpg on a run. +5% if running on a cooking oil mix.
Hope this helps.

A couple of people have made up manual belt adjusters using threaded rose joint links. http://www.rover800.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1218
Pictures of the same type of joint but used for anti-roll bars: http://www.rover800.info/forum/viewtopi ... iesel+belt

Well found Mr Moss!
I remember me and my mate trying to repair the original a few years back and while compressing the spring the damn thing exploded out of the vice, missed me by an inch and actually put a dent in his van.

Been there done that.
Rover were still in business when I had mine and got a new tensioner. Compressing it was fun. I seem to remember wrapping strong wire round it to compress it.
Not fun. I loved mine at the time but personally wouldn't have another.

Still have one on the road, and after another, so may have a punt.
On both mine never had the tensioner problem and only ever changed a clutch once.
Scrapped the 96 version out with well over 200,000 on, and the current 98 has 186,000 and just passed MOT last month
Not fussed on the tan interior, but could be easily changed.
