That is one beautiful car, and I reckon rightly won the 'Best modern Rover' title. Top work Jon, my cap is duly doffed.

Only just found this! You kept that quiet Jon!

Seriously well done although knowing how you keep your car, instead of that win you should have had a "Lifetime Achievement Award" for keeping it in that standard all the time.

It's always nice when awards like this actually go to the people who deserve them most and i don't think i'd get any arguments if i said that's you Jon!

Very, very well done!
Cheers,
Dave

Nice words, Dave thanks.
Prior to buying this car I'd looked at a lot of 800's
I almost missed this one,and it was at a garage only a couple of miles from home.
When I saw it I did'nt want to look any further, although the price tag was a bit more than I had planned spending.
Over the years It's given me a lot of fun, apart from refusing to start a couple of times,
it has never let me down when out and about.
Initially I was advised against an 800 for various reasons, but Rover got this one right.
It turned out a good buy for me.
Still enjoying it.

Thanks again.

You're welcome Jon! Seem to recall you telling me you'd owned Rov since about 1992? That's more than a lifetime for a lot of cars and knowing you've always kept it immaculate that's quite an achievement.

As for Rover getting it right, i think on the whole they did with the entire 800 range. The sad part is not enough people realise that although on the bright side that does give us quite a bit of exclusivity!  The way you keep yours not only gives us not quite so fastidious mortals something to aspire to but also encourages non-800 owners to buy and preserve one so keep up the good work!
Cheers,
Dave

Yes I bought the car late November 1992.
The other cars I looked at before buying mine were Mk1s
and most had rust holes around the rear arch / sills and door bottoms.
The oldest would have been about 5yrs old.
At least I knew where to look for the weak spots.

Would there have been a reason why the others you looked at were so badly corroded Jon?

I got my first Mk1 in about 1998 and bodily it was fine. The only rust it had was on the front subframe and when i say rust, i'm not even sure that was left on it! It was like a colander! By then, the car was about 12 years old though.
My second Mk1 (and first Sterling) was a 1988 on an "F" that i got early 2002 and that had no rust on it anywhere. Not even the customary stone chip in the front bonnet area. At the time, it would have been about 13-14 years old.

Since then, i've had one bit of rust in the drivers sill of my Sterling and i know the coupe had some welding to the passenger sill and will likely need welding to the drivers sill but apart from that (and a bit of scabbing on the drivers front wing on the coupe) neither car has any rust to speak of.

Hence the question - is there any reason the cars you looked at were so corroded?
Cheers,
Dave

Don't know the answer to that, but I remember noticing the rusty bits appeared in the same places from car to car.
Up until that time lots of other types of cars suffered with rust, some were lucky to get to 5yrs old before rusting out.
Perhaps the ones that survived longer got a bit more rust proofing liquid at the factory, or had an easier life.
Were these bare body shells not immersed in an electro static primer tank, or did that come later ?
The first thing I did when I bought mine was to spray light oil into the sills, door bottoms
and rear arches etc. Which I still do each year.
