Re: Police 800 photo album
an unusual one, heres the story behind it taken from another website..
During the early 1990's there were a spate of 'Ram-Raids' where criminals used to steal high performance cars, using them to break into jewellers, car stereo shops etc, and then make a high speed getaway. Although we had other tactics at our disposal, one of the problems we had was the relative lack of performance of our existing fleet of patrol cars.
Our vehicle technical testing department in conjunction with senior officers in roads policing, decided to evaluate a series of high performance cars. I was fortunate enough to be asked to join the evaluation team. The cars were usually driven over a period of approx 6 months, during which time, they were used operationally every day.
At the same time as we tested the Calibra I also drove the following cars which were also in full police livery:
Rover 220 Turbo
BMW M3 Evolution
Ford Sierra Cosworth
Vauxhall Astra GTE
Porsche 968 Club Sport
Mercedes 200 series Kompressor
Vauxhall Calibra 2.0 Turbo 4x4
I had a particular fondness for the Calibra, because at the time I owned a Calibra 2.0 16v, so I was very familiar with it.
The Calibra had a six speed gearbox, was fully marked in Met Police Livery, which at the time was white paint with blue and orange stripes, and had covert fitted blue lights and sirens, i.e. no roof bar.
It performed very well, being extremely fast and stable due to the 4WD. It did engage in a number of pursuits and due to it's 150 mph + performance, was able to be extremely effective.
Being a Vauxhall, it was fairly straight forward for the technical department to maintain, although I understand it was very sensitive to tyre wear. The tyres all had to be changed at the same time to ensure the 4WD system wasn't damaged.
It was also quite practical for more general traffic work, as it had a large boot and was able to carry accident equipment, unlike the Porsche and Rover.
I get the impression it didn't go into full time operational duties after the evaluation but I guess it would have caught most people out!!

This one belonged to the SPG (Special Escort Group) I believe, hence the rear matrix sign for giving following vehicles various instructions

As I understand one or two forces did try out the 2.0 Vitesse, there is a pic or two on Flickr of a Vitesse dressed up in Police gear that was used by a force.

Bike......... BMW K75RT...........Germany.
Passed my bike course on one of those. Flat out at about 115mph they used to start weaving as if there was a hinge in the middle of the frame. Disconcerting to begin with but controllable once you got used to it.
A good solid work horse the K75. Replaced by the Honda Pan European.

A Rover 827i Auto F478 OYH (last taxed, late 1997) features in this advert for the Metropolitan Police recruitment:

That brings back a few memories Mo.
We don't tend to do hospital runs/ambulance escorts these days.
Thanks for posting it up. Notice the Motorcycle Trafpol at Parliament Square in his plastic jacket and Jodpurs directing traffic. Happy days
