Does the miss-fire smooth out on revving or under load? Could be a failed/out of spec Lambda sensor.

I've not driven it really. As it stands at the minute it seems to come and go.

I've ordered a set of Bosch plugs for it. So I'll fit them and report back with what I find.

Just been out and chucked the new plugs in. No different. I tried it with each coil pack and reset the fault codes each time.

From cold the car starts up nicely then after only a few seconds the management light flashes and it starts to run rough. If I sit revving it and warming it up it runs nicely with a steady 3-4000rpm showing. As soon as I let off and it settles the light comes on again.

If I keep repeating this until the car appears to be fully warm the light stays off and it ticks over ok, if a slight lumpy but not too bad.

I've about had enough of it TBH, I was thinking of investigating the injectors but with having no spares means more cash on a car that isn't worth a lot anyway. So I may just chuck it on ebay and see if anyone goes for it. Might be someone who knows exactly what's wrong or has spares to try.

I've run out of interest and it's in the way anyway.

Just a quick update on this. I gave up with it and decided not to waste anymore cash on it.

So you can guess what happened next. :D

I booked a collection off cartakeback.com and had the car car taken away after removing the new battery and tyres. Along with making sure it wouldn't run again by sticking waxoyl in anywhere it fit. :D

Didn't lose too much, it was a cheap car that didn't work out. The Astra I fetched to replace it is far better car so in a way it worked out for the better.

Seems i found this thread too late to help Chris but it was almost certainly a shitty throttle body - they're renowned for it and the first thing Peugeot techs do if one comes in with those symptoms is empty a can of carb cleaner into the throttle body, start it up and give it a good rev followed by a blat round the block. Most of the time this sorts it quickly and easily.
So Brad hit the nail on the head!

Good luck with the Astra!
Cheers,
Dave

I would have liked to have found the cause.

I don't like it when things beat me. Drives me nuts. Just wasn't worth anymore time/money being put into it.

It's now put the nail in the coffin of French cars for me once and for all. I've said it a few times but that's it no more.......

Allelujah! Just hope the Astra isn't one of those late model ones that share DNA with Renault Migraine models? Knew someone some time back who had an 02 Renault Migraine Scenic (Vaux Zafira bodyshell) and the instrument pack had packed up. A quote from the local garage was in excess of £500 so i had a look on the Renault forum and it turned out to be a common fault that Renault were fixing for a flat £100 fee with a brand new instrument pack - even for non-original owners. I belive the Zafira and "sister" Astra models use the same instrument pack but don't know if Vauxhalls suffer the same problem or if there's a "cheap dealer fix" for them. Daresay some Nissans of the same era are the same too.
Cheers,
Dave

Don't tell me that, we're fetching a newer Astra later today.

What age are they related at?

From about 98 onwards if memory serves - basically if the bodies are the same then various parts on the car will be the same, i don't think there's anything that is simply a re-badged Renault per see but i think things like the 1.9DCi engine in Astras (and some Vectras) is the Renault unit, instruments, steering wheel and much of the interior.

What age/model is the Astra you're picking up Chris?
Cheers,
Dave

Didn't know that.

It's a 2006 MK5 1.8 Elite. Nice car, I've been nagged at as I've bought something for me.

When you next see a Renault of the same age, have a good look at it - you'll be shocked! On the good side, i'm fairly sure that will have the Z18XE (or very similar) 16v engine which is a GM unit. Even if it's the 8V engine that's still GM and those engines are pretty damned good. The big trouble is like virtually all cars from about 2000 onwards, they "bloated" and things like Astras weigh as much (if not more) as Rover 800s which takes the edge off their performance and economy.

Good luck with this new Astra, will you be putting any pics up later?
Cheers,
Dave

It's a 16V unit, it doesn't feel as quick as it should like you say.

We went for the 1.8 as the performance is better than the 1.6 and economy not much worse. Only for her indoors anyway so not like I have to like it. :D

I can do, it's a nice looking car generally. Lots of gadgets in it being top spec. TBH there's probably not much between it and a Sterling aside electric seats which was an option but not fitted to this one.

That's why cars have got heavier recently - even base models have things like air-con. electric windows etc and various safety rules have meant bulkier bodywork etc etc etc.
Also the quest for zero emissions has strangled the engines, not sure what yours will put out but i'd guess about 115bhp - the original Astra SRi was the 8v 1.8 and pushed out 115bhp - the bods in Europe have a lot to answer for!

A few pics would be nice!

123 I think, so not a bad guess.

TBH while I'd prefer more, it's more than enough for her. Her current 1.6 8V is only circa 80BHP so a fair jump for newish driver.

We pick it up this afternoon, so I'll chuck some up. :)

That's a good 50% power-hike, she'll be thinking she's Vicki Butler-Henderson or Penny Mallory!

I'll look forward to the pics later!
