New Trailer Project

Post by CHR15E » Mon Sep 26, 2016 3:38 pm

Not another half car I'm afraid. So a little more normal by my usual standards.

I'm not sure if I mentioned a while back or not but the Transit died on us and is still waiting for something to be done with it. We suspect the timing chain has snapped.

As a result I decided a better solution for me was a decent sized box trailer. After a lot of looking on ebay and other places and viewing a few I decided I'd be better off making one. There's a lot of crap out there it seems.

So after more searching for a decent chassis I eventually found this.

Image

It's an ex-trailer tent and seems to be well made. I did have a concern over the plate on it though. Only after getting there to look at it I found it to be marked at 1900KG! Which seemed a little high as the tyres and hitch are circa 1000KG each.

Image

So after cleaning the plate up a bit it seemed someone had added the 1? After contacting the manufacturer, they backed up what I suspected and said the chassis was rated to 900KG and told me what it would have been previously.

This was important to me as I passed my test in 2000 and therefore are restricted by the newer towing limits and a trailer of 1900KG GVW would have been illegal for me tow. So basically would have been a non starter for what I had planned.

The previous owner fitted the plywood bed which seems OK though could do with treating to protect it underneath.

I kept changing my mind on the best solution for making a box on it. I decided against steel as the chassis is galvanised and didn't fancy the potential health risks that entailed.

So a few sticks of timber later and a frame was loosely constructed.

Image

Then after a few sheets of plywood it starts to take shape.

This is as far as I've got, waiting for the rain to pass and hopefully get the roof covered over and start to look at painting the sides.

Along with sorting wheel arches and doors and strengthening the walls. Figured I can do that once it's weather proofed. It's living in a relatives garage for the minute as it doesn't fit in mine.

I wonder if anyone has been behind you and wondering why an 800 has an 07 plate on it only to realise it's a trailer and not someone tailgating you in your Mondeo

Blimey Chris i thought that was the relatives garage! It's a huge box trailer or at least it looks big in the pics.

I'll be following this with interest though so keep the pics and progress coming! A couple of years back i bought a 6' x 4' home made box trailer (only about 2' tall though) as a "spares or repairs" thing on ebay. It had a Mini subframe welded to the bottom of it to provide something for the wheels to mount onto but sadly they kept the Mini wheels, tiny little 10" wheels. They also made the wheelarches to fit fairly snugly round the wheels. All this is a problem because 10" tyres are either unobtainable or ridiculously expensive these days!

As such i need to play with the electric glue-stick and make the arches big enough to house a apir of 14" Astra wheels with 165/65/14s on and then re-clad it all with some fresh wood and some chassis reinforcing metal.

I might be pinching some of your ideas! ;) :D

By the way, it seems really weird seeing a Mk1 fastback rear end with an 07 plate on it!
Cheers,
Dave

It's pretty odd seeing an 07 deg under a rover badge, let alone a mk 1.

Good point Tom! I'm sure i've seen an 06 reg'd Rover, obviously a late registration after their demise at the hands of BMW and the Phoenix Four and last year there was a brand new, unregistered black Rover 75 on ebay for £11000 if i remember rightly. Can't remember if it sold or not but if it did and was registered that would be a 65 reg - now that would be confusing!
Cheers,
Dave

There's only 2 wheels on his fastback Dean - it's a trailer and if you look at his Modeo in the pics with the new build trailer you'll see the same number plate! ;) :D

Assuming they even knew what it was in the first place?

I couldn't say obviously, it still gets attention wherever it goes so I guess that's probably not the first thing on their mind?

In old money it's 10x6x6. I wanted something large enough to move 8x4 boards and other oddball items. TBH something a bit smaller would have been OK but this chassis came along at the right money.

As Dave has said the plate is for my Mondeo. It's from when I last took the trailer camping the other month.

I assumed everyone knew about the trailer? It's the only part of an 800 I have left as I sold up my cars and parts in early 2012.

A quick pic from a few weeks back when I was test fitting for a bike rack I made.

That was always the idea of the trailer when I had it parked at the side of my fastback.

Aside the the black windows in the trailer it was basically identical.

Been getting more done on the trailer over the last week or so to get it at least water tight before the weather gets worse.

So far I've covered the roof with EPDM rubber sheet. Thinking of using the same stuff on my garage later on depending on my opinion of it over the winter. Not cheap but all in one piece which I liked the idea of.

Image

All the outside has had a coat of varnish. Undecided whether to paint over the top of it yet. At the minute it's just to seal it up.

Image

Stole the stays out the rear of the Transit to hold the doors open as they were quickly beginning to be a pain keep banging about.

Image

Started making a bench at the bottom, fancied the idea so we'll see it if gets used yet. Not strictly essential at the minute but seemed like a good idea at the time. Though the main plan is for it to be for moving/carrying I like the idea of a mobile workshop should I need it.

Excuse the wheel arches, they were just a bodge to use the trailer the other day. I have another plan now which is why the bench isn't full width.
