Swapped the rear shoes on the Jeep

For probably about 3 weeks now the rear brakes have slowly been making more noise. Mostly from cold. A nice grinding noise.

Bought the shoes straight away but only got around to swapping them this afternoon.

The pics are the passenger side ones.

They're barely worn. Though very black. The drums were fine aside a little lip on the edge which has been cleaned off. No damage, scoring anything. Strange, any theories on what's happened? Have they overheated in the past, got old or were just crap?

Because they are on the rear axle they get very little use. They don't look too bad to me, if you give them a rub with some emery cloth you will remove the glazing and can re-use them

Why start grinding though?

Just the crap from the glazing and the rust on the lip at the rear of the drum. Give them both a good clean and refit.

The grinding noise may also be just a build up of dust. As John says, a bit of a clean up and they'll be OK - as long as they're not cracked from overheating or contaminated by grease.

They're probably just black from the iron dust on them (from the drums).

Binned them now anyway. I bought new ones straight away as they had to be ordered in. Sods law says if I'd waited the car would be sat for days. Can't win either way.

Only £25 so not the end of the world. I'm happier they're new anyway TBH.

£25 sounds reasonable. One thing about Jeeps and such is that they kept a fixed design/spec for a long time and that usually means that prices are reasonable.

Only downside was they weren't off the shelf. Took 3 days to get them. So you need to plan a little.

Kind of daft to fit drum brakes to a vehicle that could potentially be used for driving along a river bed.

Aside that I wish they weren't there anyway. I hate drum brakes with a passion. Vowed I'd never have another with them on after the MK4 Escort cab I had. Got 2 now, the Jeep and the Espace. Both been swapped as well now. So hopefully that should be it for a while.
