1997 Yamaha VMX1200 V-Max

On Wednesday Mrs Tenesmus had the car for an early appointment so I thought I'd dust off the bike.

The night before I thought "will I pop down the garage and make sure it starts? Nah, it's never let me down before..."

:shock:

Oh. My fault for never using it. Right, it's Saturday so let's get cracking. I have a trickle charger I haven't had to use for over 10 years, need to get at the battery which involves taking off the seat (4 bolts) and unplugging a load of wires and undoing a couple more bolts to get at the expensive gel battery I installed way back. Then I realise there's a charger plug already cable tied to the frame in easy reach without having to take anything off. D'oh! I fitted it a long time back but never had to use it due to the gel battery never running down... until now.

The charger tells me the battery should still be ok so am charging overnight, I'd rather not spend another £80 on one...

Meanwhile I took the opportunity to sort out a fan bypass switch - these bikes overheat in the summer and the thermostat doesn't kick in soon enough so I have a handlebar switch to turn on the fan.

Other very long term jobs - paint the engine (fiddly) and get an airbrush paint job done - verrrrry expensive so I might struggle getting permission for that...

Been toying with the idea of getting back into bikes again, sold my Triumph Trident 900 6 years ago and have kind of regretted it ever since. Having said that I know I simply would never get round to using it with the same results as the reason for this post. But on a nice summers day I do miss the old charge, and thats a nice V-max. Roll on summer 8)

Thanks for the nice words. Sadly it looks like the battery is U/S - but it's lasted for 10 years including spells of 6 months through the winter unused and not charged so fair enough. Down town for a new one tomorrow - £100 :( but a good investment as they have more oomph and last a lot longer than standard.

Riding a motorbike does put most alleged "fast car" claims into perspective...

10 years isnt really bad for a motorbike battery!

Installed the new one - £117 - ouch. Still, it starts now.

Car MOT tomorrow so the credit card is taking a hammering this week...

Bike MOT today. Kept getting an advisory for a warped rear disc so brought along a new one (£120?!?!) for them to fit. Handlebar grip had to be glued on but that's it for another year. Now advisories for wheel bearings, a slightly squiffy rim at the front (probably a pothole) - bit annoying, that wheel cost £600 - and front disc(s) fluctuating.
