ok, will do. Have to say not much furry shite in cam covers. Will do throttle body to. Tappets actually sound very good. Its rattles for first couple sec and then quietens down.

Shouldn't really rattle at all! I'd do an oil/filter change, first litre of fersh oil that you put in use ATF-U instead and then use 10W40 semi synth for the rest. Run it and it should sort it out within a few days. :D

I believe you need to be careful regarding the paint code as there were several different shades of White Gold (and others!). My brother has a 'two tone' White Gold Sterling where somebody previously got the wrong mix. On my Vitesse Lux the code is COF (Modena Red) and when I went to get some paint (only this last week), I was asked if was the bright or dark version. Took a punt on bright as there is a slightly darker patch on the bonnet where somebody may have got the wrong shade previously, and it looks like it was a good guess but it just goes to show.

You're right Mark but you can narrow it down by firstly the year of the car and secondly, they have colour swatches on the computer screen.

There are two codes for White Gold :

GMK = White Gold 1 up to about 94/95 time

GMN = White Gold 2 from 94/95 onwards, some colour matching programs show this also as Pewter and the colour swatch for that is silver/grey.

James' car is White Gold 2 and can be narrowed down by year etc as above to the right shade. :D

Dave

Hope this isn't hijacking the thread but my engine rattles. Comes in at about 2200rpm and goes either with gear change or rev increase/descrease. Doesn't matter if cold or warm. I had assumed it was a worn camshaft or similar. Engine is 128K, running 10/40 semi. It is using a bit of oil and I get the tell tale puff of blue smoke on start up sometimes  . Not had chance to investigate yet as the car is my only, daily driver vehicle. Sterling gets a sill job this coming week, so I might get chance soon :).

What oil are you running Mark? Those symptoms sound very similar to a set of symptoms that occurred across three cars, almost instantly after changing the oil a while back.

Dave

I'm using 10/40 semi syn or do you want the brand as well. Can't remember off hand but it would usually be something decent. The Vitesse had a bit of work done before being put back on the road is September last year after three years off. Of course that included all new fluids and filters etc.

As mentioned above, is there something particular you'd suggest?

It's the brand i was after Mark - i'd kind of assumed you were using 10W40 semi-synth but thanks for confirming that.

A good quality 10W40 semi-synth James, i use this one and have had good results :

https://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car- ... &0&cc5_245

Their current promo code is "MID35" which should give 35% off making it nearer £13 or thereabouts. They do filters as well so you can get discount on that too and if you choose "Economy Delivery", that's normally free and takes anywhere from a day to about 4 days to get to you - perfect if you plan a weekend oil change! :D

Dave

Done some more research on paint colour, these are the 'White Golds'. The second reference is Rover's own code which includes shading info.

GMN WHITE GOLD 2 MET 1995-2002 BLVC 1201
GMK WHITE GOLD MET 1992-1996 BLVC 933
618 WHITE GOLD 2 MET 1998-2002 LRC 618-GMN

Hope that helps somebody. Confuses the hell out of me :? .

Thanks Mark - GMK is the early White Gold 1, GMN is the 95 onwards and the 618 reference is the very late one, used mainly on Jaguar-Land Rover vehicles (Freelander, Rangie, X-Type etc) when Rover was owned by BMW and 800 production had more or less ceased.

After work today I started cleaning. I wanted to get the gunk out of the engine bay, A) so that I can see what's going on and where the oil is coming from, and B) I wont get quite as grubby when I start working on it.

I laid out a tarpaulin and parked the car on it. Jacked up one side for access to the underside. Then I covered it in degreasing fluid and set to work with the power washer.

The patient.

Cleaned it to just as I had the washer out. Surprising the amount of green shite that comes out from the chrome strips on the door and bumpers. Took a while to clean up the car park afterwards, oil and shite everywhere!

That looks better! The chrome strips in the door trims do harbour a lot of moss, it's a pain in the ar5e to be honest!

Who put the red antifreeze in the cooling system?

There was so much rusty water staining around the header tank and down the inner wing. All gone now. Just got the insides to clean out.

Rad looks pretty knackered. Think it is the original one.

It could be the rad that caused the overheat and subsequent use of plain water. Might be wise to shell out on a new rad before any serious use and also a new thermostat. Probably using a flushing treatment (Comma X-Stream Flush is good) would work wonders, especially as it's been run with no antifreeze for a while!

There's a chance that someone has either removed or "modified" the 'stat so it won't warm up properly. In this weather you may not notice it, especially with a dodgy rad.

Running an engine without a 'stat or a dodgy one can lead to the head warping, especially on a mixed metal engine (cast iron block, aluminium head so red/OAT coolant is a big NO-NO!!!) because there's a high chance of developing "hot spots" and "cool spots" where different parts of the head are at different temperatures because the 'stat isn't keeping it even throughout.

Good tip to clean the inside of the expansion tank is get a vessel it fits in (bucket, tub or similar) and use half a dozen extra strength denture cleaning tablets, put the tank in and the tablets, fill up above the top of the tank with boiling water and give it a good stir/shake. Repeat the stir or shake every so often, leave it overnight, give it another good stir/shale before emptying and rinsing. :D
Cheers,
Dave
