Sorry to hear of the MOT fail Charles, considering you only had the light aim last year and no advisories how did the structural rot happen so quick?
Did you use a different garage for this years mot?

Re: Charles's family owned from new Mk1a 827si
Hi Steve, I used the same garage as last year who took it to the same test station with the same tester. I can only think the tester was feeling merciless or the MOT requirements have become far more strict. The car had a glowing full report a few weeks ago.

Sorry to hear of your MOT fail. I'd be inclined to take it elsewhere for a retest. Did the tester show you the areas under the car, or were you just told? Unless you can make holes, then you should just get advisories.
I hope that your lovely car can stay on the road.

A word of caution: it's quite common for "I'll lay it up until I've saved the money to do it properly" projects to turn into "out of sight, out of mind, never get done" projects. I would say that if possible, it might be worth doing small, cheap, DIY jobs on it to keep it in mind and keep it ticking over.

Don't worry Richard (as Hyacinth would say) I have sorned this car two or 3 times before and it's always made its way back to the territories of UK roads. It's lasted 25 years in one family, and will not likely be forgotten or meet it’s maker at any time. I have showered too much money on this one already. I rent a storage place with private space to run the car too keep everything ticking over.

Re: Charles's family owned from new Mk1a 827si
I was only told what the car failed on by the Rover mechanic who I have alot of trust in. (though he didn't test the car) I have looked under it and the rear sub frame is quite rusty. Even if I didn't have rust to worry about I don't think I could justify the expense of putting it through the MOT again with the necessary repairs, because I hardly drive nowadays. Which is why i think it would be better in the long run not to patch things up like I have been doing over the years because it always comes back to bite you.FrazzleTC wrote:Sorry to hear of your MOT fail. Re: Charles's family owned from new Mk1a 827si
As the others have said, it's easier to keep something on the road and no more, than returning a car to the road, because as a car sits, it doesn't stay in the state it's put away in, unfortunately, cars that aren't used deteriorate, and, as a serial Rover owner, I can confirm that it's true. My other advice is to absolutely cover the underside of your car in some sort of oil-based preserver, to stop more rust attacking. Rub down and kurust afflicted areas, then coat liberally in something like waxoyl, Epoxy Mastic, etc.
However, as a student, always working to a shoestring budget, I completely understand how expensive it is to do this!

Thanks for the advice Fraser. A £700 bill is still abit steep just now whereas it's more affordable in 4 or 5 months time after putting funds aside.

Re: Charles's family owned from new Mk1a 827si
What kind of structural damage is it really? Any pics?
With a small mig-welder you can really do wonders, and it's a great opportunity to learn how to weld this yourself. Over here we can buy sheet metal in various sizes and for structural area I use 1.5mm and for the body 0.9 is good. Floorpans, I'd recommend 1.0mm. The difference in 0.9 - 1.0 - 1.5 is huge. 1.5 is really tough.

I don't really know what lurks underneath but I'm taking it to another garage who my dad used when mom drove the rover and see what they say and ask them to take pictures. I have tried welding before but I need a fair bit more practice before tackling a car.

Re: Charles's family owned from new Mk1a 827si
Thanks Paul, I value everybody's opinions because it's good to get different perspectives on topics. I could look for a car in better condition and use the old one for spares but then I'd be stuck with loads of worthless metal heaps and there's to me no benefit in that. Dispite being attached to this car, I don't actually love the model enough to buy more of these examples. The way I feel now after shedding hundreds in repairs over the years I would have been much better off with a reliable new car. Though I'm a slightly quirky and perhaps eccentric myself and like to be seen as different, doing things my own way. Anyway I'll keep the car for as long as I can in one piece until I have a good enough income which will allow me to restore it as I think would be appropriate.
Oh and the reason I got rid of the red manual 827 coupe is because it was as rotten as a pear in the rear wheel arches and sills. It was a very hard decision to sell it, but my head ruled because I didn't and still don't have the skills to do body repairs and painting. (though I have City and Guilds Level 1 in this) Who knows what became of this car which was a flawed mechanical beauty.

Re: Charles's family owned from new Mk1a 827si
This car is still very much alive and kicking (as proved today with a short off-road drive) though no tax, MOT. Maybe next year will see her finally return to the road when funds allow. Though in reality it could be longer before this happens. F250 needs major TLC/Restoration, one day..

Re: Charles's family owned from new Mk1a 827si
Update.
The rotten beast and relic of rotten British Leyland is still alive and very much kicking. Started first turn of the key after four months left idle. It didn't actually need to be topped up with any fluids all the more to my amazement, but just the tyres (and it's back on the original wheels). Still unable to afford a resto yet though.
