Charles's family owned from new Mk1a 827si
Well I have been on the forum a few years, and I haven’t done a thread on this car in the ‘Your Cars’ section yet – so here I go. (Dollysprint – I’ll pm you the reg for your records)
I have at last got insurance for my mum’s 1989 Mk1A 827si for me to drive, after I had a bit of a break from driving (the car is still registered to her as the only owner from new).
Been doing about 80 miles a week commuting for the last 3 weeks (the car was sat in the garage unused before this time) and touch wood, - no problems and no cutting out like it did when it first got a new EICV.
Last year the car was taken to M&G Rover specialists in Bradford (who are very good!) to sort this out including other work, and Darren the mechanic said the problem was a loose screw on the EICV that was causing the car to cut out suddenly and unexpectedly at low speeds. He replaced the shocks and springs for me with German made ‘Boge’ items which I provided. These were new old stock and cheap on eBay. Finally the car was treated to a mini service, greased and manual gearbox oil change along with other minor fettling.
So the next jobs around MOT time in April are to get the passenger side rear sill welded where it meets the wheel arch and fit the spats that Brad sent. Also to fit the new power steering oil cooler casting I have sourced from The Netherlands. I’m also trying to get hold of an oil sump from Spain. Do a full service and refurbish two rear ‘speedline’ wheels and fit two new tyres. It's never ending isn't it!

The wonders of modern technology never cease to amaze. (or confuse) I'll try and put some old pictures of the cars best views, - to be honest it looks a bit of a dog from the front and drivers side after 24 years of urban driving, but hopefully I'll have this car restored to near former glory in a few years time.

This was taken one morning showing the best aspect of the car.
In the garage with my old 827 manual coupe. The si wasn't being used at the time hence the bags on it.
Taken in 2008

I found the difference between this and the old coupe which is now gone, is that the fastback has more power and better fuel economy – perhaps because it is a non cat model. However it doesn’t drive as well as the coupe did over lumps and bumps, even after having new suspension at 110000 miles.

Re: Charles's family owned from new Mk1a 827si
Today the cars been at M&G Bradford. I noticed the Bosch battery needed changing so they fitted a new Bosch one. The old one lasted five years including two years where the car was stood, so lack of use has pensioned it off. They also fitted the new power steering oil cooler pipe which I bought from a Rover dealer in The Netherlands. The old one was rotten and I wanted it replacing for peace of mind. They did the power steering fluid, and fitted a new fuel filter at the same time and wax oiled the fuel lines and fuel filler neck.
I was aware the exhaust was blowing and Darren the business owner said it was blowing at the end and front sections. It was first fitted 10 years ago so good going as far as exhausts are concerned. The MOT is due next month and it will fail like it is so I plan to get a stainless steel one fabricated, as new ones are no longer available. (Except for eBay) There’s a company doing this just a stone’s throw in the next village, so will approach them.
The car is still very occasionally cutting out on me but I’ll drive it a bit to see if this will happen again and then think what to do next. Could it be the fast idle? I ask because when I first start the car from cold, the car will be revving at 2500 and it will drive itself for half a mile without input from me before the idle settles to normal. I don’t know if anyone else has experienced this?
Next jobs are the exhaust, the oil sump will certainly need replacing – I have a new one and gasket, service and MOT.

Nice update, Charles.
It sounds like you're in a great spot, geographically, to get these various bits and pieces done.

No longer an 800 owner!

i had a stainless one fitted to my 827 coupe, burble at low revs and quiet at mid to high revs ( use mine in sport mode most of the time ) mine was £500 with a life long garantie , you can get standard exhauasts from ats, but don't last long and about £80 to £100 a section quite expensive.
MIKE
just got a 827 mk2 coupe and loving it, more commanly known as mad mick ( used to run a nitros injected firebird ) still missing my rover, now got a BMW 735 1999. now got 2003 760l, a 6.0ltr V12 and 445bhp.

I took it to this place beacuse it was local - only 20 mins to walk home on Monday, and it was done on Wednesday. It was £575 altogether so should break even in 24 years

Re: Charles's family owned from new Mk1a 827si
Today, I took the car back to Mick at MD Automotive to have another silencer made up and fitted to the front of the exhaust system. After driving it for a week I found the exhaust a bit boomy, but now with the extra silencer, I can hear the sound of the engine rather than the exhaust note, as it was origionally intended. So I'm quite happy with this now.
Gases were leaking from this part
MOT is next Monday, so we'll see if she passes

Re: Charles's family owned from new Mk1a 827si
I took the 827 to M&G for its MOT and interim service today. Unfortunately it failed on the first attempt on the following: -
1 Nearside Headlamp aim to high
2 Offside “ “ “ “
3 Offside Headlamp aim too high and too far to the left
4 Nearside Headlamp aim too high and too far to the right
The headlamps were sorted and then passed with no advisories (which I thought odd considering I know that the windscreen is starting to delaminate and the front brake discs are corroded)
I had the new oil sump and gasket, and the vitesse sport antiroll bars fitted at the same time – which have instantly transformed the handling (thanks Chris - sterling789 ) What surprised me was Darren said he couldn't get hold of an air filter - they are no longer available! So I'll get ebay to the rescue.
So now I can enjoy the car for a while until the time comes when I’ll have to have the two rear wheels refurbished ready for new Michelin rubber. The current ones are 8 years old so their time has come. I’ve worked out I’m getting 28mpg which is ok considering my driving style is not so smooth.
