Re: Scoobys new 827 Sterling coupe
I used a 3ft long garden planter (could easily get away with a 2ft one), chucked in a few dishwasher tablets (6 i think) followed by a couple of kettles of hot water and topped it up with hot water from the tap after adding the cat. Gave it a bit of a shake to start things off then a shake every so often after.
Washed it out with the garden hose the next day, blew it dry with the airline, painted the outside and refitted it.
Before refitting i did check i could see through it and it was letting a whole lot more light through.
I know Tom (traineefarmer) did the same trick with his cat last year with a similar improvement and both his and mine had previously struggled to meet the MoT standard because of the cats.
It seems to work very well so go for it!

Well done on the bumper and bonnet!
I hope you can still salvage the old bumper.

Thanks Marc - the old bumper might be savable with some plastic filler and a lot of work and a respray. For now though i've been polishing it up and it's beginning to look quite good :Marc-827-Vitesse wrote:Well done on the bumper and bonnet!

That shows the whole car done with the first stage (Meguiars Paint Cleaner) all over and the second stage (Meguiars Crystal Polish) on the bonnet, roof, boot, A & C pillars and wing tops. Still got the "vertical" areas to do including the bumpers with the second stage then the final Carnauba Wax stage.
I have a pair of reasonable front wings to go on at some point (probably when i paint the black sections of the front bumper as per the original) but for now i'm getting it to look as good as possible "as is" and doing little upgrades/improvements/modifications such as factory look day running lights :
(Click to play the video)
Originality is great but where there is an improvement that can be made without altering or detracting from the original look and/or specification then i'm all for it. For example i have a pair of these on their way to me :
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231484071629? ... EBIDX%3AIT
The washer jets on the new bonnet leave a lot to be desired and the ones on the original bonnet were getting tired (but still better than the ones on the new bonnet!) so i hunted for some Rover ones of the same spec as the originals. These were superseded by the ones on the new bonnet and also fit 200/400/600/800/Mini/Metro/MG-f and TF/ Rover 25/45//75 and MG ZR/ZS/ZT and don't seem to be as good as the ones fitted pre-96 so i thought i'd go with a tried and tested mod that others have done. The same mod has also been fitted to many Hondas for the same reason all with good reports. They're about half the price of the Rover jets and barely noticeable until the washers are used.
They should land tomorrow so i'll hopefully get them fitted and report back on here!

Re: Scoobys new 827 Sterling coupe
Thanks Marc that's a real compliment coming from someone who also knows his stuff!
There's always new things to find out though and every day is a new thing to learn.
I'm very impressed with the new washer jets, here's a couple of videos of them in action, one from inside the car and one from outside :
http://vid567.photobucket.com/albums/ss ... 501311.mp4
http://vid567.photobucket.com/albums/ss ... 236790.mp4
The water lands in a horizontal line about 2-3" (50-75mm) above the wipers parked position and this means the wipers can clean with all the water instead of overspray floating up the screen and in through an open window!
Not only do i not get soaked anymore when i forget the window is open but the screen gets cleaner quicker and easier.
Also at high speed the water still hits the screen in the same place which is another huge bonus! Fitting them is as simple as popping the old ones (including the grey plastic gasket) out, pulling the washer hose through, unplugging it from the old jet and onto the new jet and push the new one in. Job done!!

Re: Scoobys new 827 Sterling coupe
Today i finally investigated the sunroof drain in the drivers footwell.
For those who know the set-up, the rubber elbow that usually parts company with the drain hose hadn't just parted company with the drain hose but was just sitting there, resting on the wiring loom - not even in the hole it should sit in!
It was also missing the "duck bill" on the end of it that diverts the water away from the inner wing when it reaches the outside world.
Luckily i had a couple of spares :
As i went out to fit one, i noticed a huge, anvil shaped cloud and thought it looked like a thunder cloud. Next second - big flash followed by a big crash - thunder cloud alright!
By the time i'd fiddled and faffed around getting the elbow into its hole and the drain hose into the end of it, there had been quite a few lots of thunder and lightning. As i locked the car, the heavens opened! Not often can something like that be tested immediately it's finished!
Went out shortly after it finished and the footwell was bathed in dryness for a change! I will be changing the wing very soon and when i do, i'll pop the drain out again, glue it on the end of the drain hose with some Evil-Stik and then refit it to the inner wing while i can actually see what i'm doing!
A previous owner decided because of the water ingress from the sunroof drain to cut round the heel pad on the carpet with a Stanley knife and then also cut the sound proofing underneath and remove it. Luckily i have a nice carpet and fresh soundproofing to go in, which i plan on doing very soon! Watch this space for some pics and a few words about fitting the replacement carpet etc!

Re: Scoobys new 827 Sterling coupe
It's seeing stories like this that confirm even more for me that I will not buy another car with a sunroof fitted.
The worst I've ever seen was in a Calibra 12 or so years back so it was 13/14 years old at the time and completely rotten at the back. The mate at work I'd bought it from had put it through it's MOT the year before at my unit and it was just a patchwork quilt of plates.
Anyway skip to when I bought it from him to break as it was a redtop XE engine and Calibra bits generally were worth something, I found all 4 of the sunroof drains just dangling in the boot. The rear panel was so weak you could put your finger through it though it appeared solid at first.
I can't say for certain that it caused the car to be in the state it was in but it certainly wouldn't have helped.
I'll stick with air con/climate control.

Re: Scoobys new 827 Sterling coupe
I've already had the repairs done Chris so i needed to safeguard against future problems. One minor drawback with air con is it can cause your roof to rot because of condensation - my Jeep needs a bit of TLC with the electric glue stick!

Re: Scoobys new 827 Sterling coupe
Just back from the dreaded annual test and pleased to report another (nearly) "clean sheet pass".
The fly in the ointment as it were was the LPG had lost its idle setting somewhat and was throwing out 5.44% CO but a quick tweak with an 8mm spanner while the laptop was hooked up and 0.08%CO, HC was a bit high at 445ppm but well within pass limits and when corrected (by dividing by either 7 or 12 depending on the machine and i forgot to ask) would only be something like 63-64ppm HC in reality. The reason for this is instead of the normal Hydrocarbons, it measures Hexanes from LPG and the figure needs correcting as described.
So there we have it, another 827 with another years life at least!

Re: Scoobys new 827 Sterling coupe
Thanks Andy - the alloys are a bit "marmite" and seem to suit the Coupé but not the saloon. Got some different alloys on that too and the MoT due on it as well!
I wanted to keep the Rover alloys but couldn't find any, the ones on it were damaged and i needed something. The later use by MG-Rover of similar alloys made my ideas come a bit easier and when i found a car with the same PCD and offset it was a no-brainer really!
