1988 Rover 820Se Fastback
A friend has had this Fastback in his collection only briefly - he'd bought it to do a couple of shows with this summer before moving it on. He chops and changes his fleet on a very regular basis adding and removing whatever he spots that takes his fancy.
Luckily, he was as interested in our Rover 214SEi as we were with the 820, so a very simple deal was arranged. The cars were swapped, and log books signed at this weekend's Classic Car Show at Tatton Park!
Anyway, about the car. It's a 1st August 1988 registered 820Se. It's in pretty remarkable condition considering its age. I'm not too clued up on what's good and bad condition-wise with these cars, so if you can tell me what to keep and eye on and what to look for, that'd be appreciated! There's so rust or rot, no dents, and no scratches. The front bumper paintwork is a bit crazed on the top where I presume it's been rolled gently into something. There's also evidence of some previous repair to the boot lid above the 'Rover' script. Inside, apart from a few mucky marks to clean off the seats and a sagging headlining it's as good as the outside.
Someone has obviously been treasuring this car for a very long time. The original dealer sticker and number plates are still there. The 'plates have a very period typeface - very 80's! The first owner also splashed out on a full set of Rover floor mats and a set of mud flaps.
Now, I like to keep informed with slightly nerdish details and from my research in the brochure archive, I understand that this is pretty early for a Fastback? It seems that very early on the Fastback lost the elongated boot badging for the type that featured on the then new Rover 200. Also, The 820Se seemed to get pretty quickly revised to include rear head restraints and an electric sunroof. This example has a manual sunroof and no rear head restraints.

Re: 1988 Rover 820Se Fastback
Welcome to the low-spec mk1 800 owners club, I think there is me, Kate (TDHFastback) Alex SBY and now your good self, but I reckon I should take the crown for owning the most miserable-specced car, mine is a 1987 820 E, it doesnt have wood on doors or even have a sunroof.
Your car, like Alex's and Kates (and unlike mine) is a stunning example, I hope you keep it and cherish it.

You'll have to park this on the 800 stand at BL Day next year Richard!.

Re: 1988 Rover 820Se Fastback
Sorry, think I might have implied that I was something to do with it!
Nope, it's not mine, I just happened to spot it, I was on another stand altogether..

Re: 1988 Rover 820Se Fastback
Ah, sorry, my mistake, two Richards.
So we now have two Richards both with Fastback 820's and at least one Allegro! (I have a lovely W-plate Allegro 1.3L but obviously the fastback is much later than yours!!)

Re: 1988 Rover 820Se Fastback
Thank you, everyone for the positive comments.
Showing the car at a few shows next year is certainly on the cards. The problem, usually, with the 'big' shows like BL Day is deciding which car to take!

Re: 1988 Rover 820Se Fastback
The sunroof aperture and sunroof cartridge are known weak spots on these. Needless to say, I had a look for you at Tatton and whilst there's a bit of rust on the cartridge (hence the staining on the sunroof cover) the sunroof aperture is one of the best I've seen in a long time.
This is a very early fastback and what is known as a MK1a - later handles but the early six dial dash. Badging changeover was during the MK1b run, and if memory serves coincided with the big bumpers. Not sure it should be on 15" wheels with 827SLi trims, but they suit the car.

Sam - the car is correct spec for the year including the 15" wheels and trims which were common to the 820SE, 820Si, 827Si, 827SLi from March 1988 onwards.
The paint is White Diamond, interior is Chalkstripe/Plain Velvet in Flint colour.

As Mo said
Welcome to the slowback poverty spec set.
That is lovely. These early bargain bucket cars have a certain charm which is hard to describe. A slower pace of life in a Skypod wapfeed world. Just drop in your Big Country cassette into the player kick back and enjoy a simpler way of travel.
Some piccies of mine on this thread page

You've been spotted already at the BMC
Next time we need to get you on the stand as it is a lovely car. White as well fancy a swap?

Re: 1988 Rover 820Se Fastback
My 1991 820i would have been poverty spec until some bloke at BAe decided he wanted a special edition. Mine has a manual sunroof, mirrors and rear windows. Mine doesn't have ABS which is a godsend as there'll be no irritating problems with reluctor rings, sensors etc. However it was then kitted out with the soft leather, 16" Prestiges and a TWR kit.
I'll not post pics as they're on here somewhere.
I did have an 820 SE, E556MDU, for a while, bought it for £100 as a stop gap until I got another car. The tailgate was shot, bodywork was very tatty but it ran sweet as a nut on its SPi engine. sadly, the day before I got an 820Si it was nicked and used for a ramraid vehicle on a school. I guess they needed the loadspace.

Re: 1988 Rover 820Se Fastback
Thanks for the kind comments everyone!
I'm intrigued that it is considered 'poverty' spec...I actually thought it quite luxurious! The majority of our other classics don't come with velour upholstery, electric windows all 'round, electric mirrors and remote central locking. It's a good job I am easily impressed, a Sterling or Vitesse might have proved to be too much excitement!
