Right, had a butchers at the sun visor wiring... 2 wires.

Green with a white stripe... follows the loom straight down behind the passenger A pillar trim cover and comes out and connects to a white plug behind the glovebox (maybe possible to reach it from underneath the glovebox, hard to say now it aint there) It continues on from the white plug but cant see where, probaly follows the wiring alongside the door strips behind the carpet .

Black wire... goes the other way and connects to the centre light, but it is also got 2/3 more black wires spliced into it and then double backs and follows the green wire to the white connector.

I think the black wire is an earth connection and all the spliced in black wires all run to the door contacts (or similar set up)

Good Luck :)

Odd in that case as my Sterling (93MY but 94 registered) has both footwell lamps. Perhaps using up old stock.

Thanks for doing the digging Dean - much appreciated! Out of interest, what sort of condition are your A-post trims in? Noticed mine are scuffed in a few odd places so might be interested in buying them if they're available.

Green with a white trace wire suggests ignition fed (green was used a lot for ignition fed circuits on the 800) and the black is an earth so at least i have some clues if i can't find the relevant wiring on mine.
Cheers,
Dave

when I say I read somewhere.... I meant on a forum, not in a rover manual.
The poster was saying that the 92/3/4 year motors still had the holes and wiring yet they had stop fitting the lights,
and that they were still available but listed as a landrover part only.

The A post trims were ok, but may have had the odd mark.... although I did just rip them off and toss them to one side in the rain :(
I`ll have a look tomorrow dave... see what condition they are now in , get a pic maybes... postage only

Excellent - thanks Dean!

I don't think i've seen a post-96 car with footwell lights or even the holes as they appear to have been deleted. (How can you delete a hole? :? A hole is something that is empty, doesn't exist etc)
Once again i suspect it cost Rover more to remove/delete/fill in the hole than it would have done to leave it there with the lights, like the rear cig lighter on Mk2 cars - the tooling to make the cover to go where the lighter was cost more than the amount of lighters would have done in all probability.
I'm sure somewhere i've seen a spec sheet that says the Sterling should have had footwell lighting until at least 95 and the 827 coupé was meant to be Sterling-spec so should have them. Oh well, ebay for aftermarket lighting methinks! :D
Cheers,
Dave

I know dave... I don't get it either.
The lights prolly don't even cost them a quid each to make...
it must cost more to take it away then it does to fit it...

Always hate the fact that post 96 motors don't have the little red lights on the end of the doors....
a step back in class :(

I've only ever seen one or two Mk2s (very early 92-93?) with the little red square lights on the end of the doors and i think they were retro-fitted by the owners! Again they're are the same lamps as the footwell lights but with a red lens instead of clear. I have blue LED bulbs in the footwell lights in my Sterling so they light up blue. Nothing to stop someone putting red LEDs in the same lamp unit and fitting them into the ends of the doors though! :D
However if you don't mind a slight aftermarket look, red LED lights could be used, either in strips, squares or whatever is available. Just as long as they're thin enough for the door to shut and can be wired in easily the main thing is they light up red!

As you say, a step back in class losing little touches like those.

***EDIT***

Just looked on Rimmers and found they still list the little red square door lights, £4.12 each and if i've understood correctly, they were only fitted up to VIN 184566 although there are three different VIN cut-offs depending whether front or rear door and coupe or not. Same goes for the footwell lights, maybe the original owner of mine insisted they should be there (VIN is 194xxx) and paid extra although i dont recall anything on the original receipt for them.

http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID004482

They also list the lamps as AFU2810 for the SD1 which reminds me - they were fitted under the bonnet of the Mk1 800 but not the Mk2 - underbonnet lights! Same light units used on the XJ40 but can't find listings on Rimmers for them. Also used as speedo illumination on tractors believe it or not!

Just realised Dean - we've hijacked Darrens thread! Sorry Darren! Maybe we've given you some ideas to enhance Tara though! :D
Cheers,
Dave

You`re right dave , now I come to think of it....
My current 1993 (k reg) SLi has the little red door lights

But back in `99 when I bought my first mk2 Sterling it was a 1994 (L reg) model
they had done away with the little square red lights but they had red bulbs into the puddle lights in the door cards.
was never keen on that, but never did change them.

You can still see the outline of the square on the later cars, but it is still solid metal, would require a fair amount of drilling (or jigsaw) to retro fit them .

Under bonnet lights on the Mk1.... hmmm, now that does ring a bell

The square could be used to position an aftermarket LED light instead of chain drilling or similar. Trying to find a generic part replacement for the underbonnet lights and also washer jets then find a heated version - Freelander 1 uses the same standard jets (different prat number) but can't find a heated version. I have a pair of Rover heated washer jets, brand new but no part number so no further forward!

Lots of little refinements left out with time but the one that never got to the 800 at all is a cup holder - working on that at the moment! :D
Cheers,
Dave

They were available as a kit for the 800 at one point and an option on Mk3 200s, MG f/TF and 75/ZT models, all of which use the same basic washer jets. However trying to find them these days in any condition is like finding hens teeth and finding new ones is like finding hens dentists!

I did find a lot of reference to something i've seen before on a Honda forum some time back but is also on MG-Rover and similar forums, that is using the washer jets from some Peugeot/Citroen models as they give a "mist" rather than two jets. Apparently this is a vast improvement on the standard twin jets so i'm giving that a try for now. For the princely sum of about £6.50 from fleabay for a new pair, they're about half the price that Rimmers want for a new pair so worth a try. If they are as good as the other reviews i've seen then definitely worth it.

Bluetooth is easily added, so many different options out there you pays yer money and takes yer choice. As for the cup holders, if i get it right, they won't even be seen until the wood is pressed then they'll slide out under the stereo - that's the plan anyway!

Then there's the factory-look DRLs :

Question is, where do you stop?

Just to confirm, my 1993 mk2 does still have the wiring (with the connectors on) for the footwell lights.

Stuck my fat fingers thru the light aperture, found a wire pulled it thru, had 2 connectors on it.
Bodged 2 wires from a led strip I had handy and bobs your uncle... we have light !
checked them again , on and off with the courtesy lights :)

I remember someone on the facebook group fitted Led lights under the back of the front seats to light up the rear footwells
Looked alright too :)

you can buy strips of 12V LED for pennies on ebay , if you don't mind the 2 week wait from china.

Nice one Dean! I was thinking of doing the LED strip under the front seats (when i finish doing the wiring alterations to the seats and getting the newer ones fitted) and in fact ordered 4 green LED strips (the other two are going in the door handles) and they were still only pennies from a UK supplier that didn't ask if i wanted "sore finger wi' that?".

Think i have some puddle lamps around somewhere with the smoked lenses, should be a straight fit for you - i'll have a look if you like?
Cheers,
Dave

I have been quiet since the sunroof episode...mainly becuase I got caught up restoring a caravan or two...another story. I did have a breakdow too after a newly fitted belt gave out on the motorway...wasn't a cheapy either. It was only replaced a few weeks before at the same time as the fuel pump.

New belt fitted and that seems fine.

Next job on the list:
Taras shock absorbers are on their way out so looking to change all four for something more worthy of a Vitesse (gas rather than oil). I also need to check the ARB is correct.

Big problem with shocks now Darren is "one size fits all" for the 800 range. Best bet out of what's available is KYB (Gas over oil) but they're not exactly cheap. That said none of them are!

As for the ARBs, they should be 26mm front and 21mm rear on the diseasel, same as the last Vitesse and Police spec cars. The front ARB bushes are still available from Rimmers, RBX100500 is the prat number, the only 21mm rear ARB bushes that have been found were found either by Tom or Jim and are these :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231410243821? ... EBIDX%3AIT

You need the D brackets when changing to these the first time, after you can just change the bushes for about £21 for the pair.

Out of curiosity, Tara had a breakdown or you did? Or both?  :D
Cheers,
Dave

The car has never caused me to have a breakdown :) ...but the caravan saga was pushing it a bit.

Thanks for the info on the shocks. I have found a few suppliers of gas versions including TRW, KRB, Bilstein and Sachs. Need to make sure they are the right ones before ordering though. Whatever I order I will post the info up here if they fit.
