midnite's 800 collection
i will post pics soon guys, anyway, most of you know i bought tracys 820i special edition, well i bought the silver 827 sli off of ebay, n all, so i went and picked it up today, fly from exeter to manchester, the guy who owned the car was a lovely old guy, and the car is very very nice, few bits here and there but minimal rust and very few dings on it, never been painted either and no rust on the arches.
electric windows work, central locking works perfect, vehicle display computer unit works excellent, no clouds in the display nothing, looks brand new, interior is really good, minimal headlining problems, drove great too, and smells like my sterling did 12 yrs ago, 2 owners original rover service book pack inc service book and stacks of bills
to say I'm happy is an understatement, she drives like i hoped she would, except the blowing exhaust that got REALLY worse at bristol.
UPDATE pics and the car is a 2 owner car, original oxford supplied vehicle, first owner was a nuclear scientist or similar, it has a rover fleet stamp in the service book as supplier.
front bumper is cracked on both corners slightly, black trim on bumpers a pillars is ropey, but its untouched on the sills, arch lips are a1 engine bay is great.

Re: midnite's 800 collection
Never seen an H plate with short bumpers, can you pm your chassis number at some point to confirm its age.
Thanks
Dave

Not heard of "short bumpers" before Dave, short in relation to what?
Also this 827 SLi fastback has/had the same style bumpers and it was also on an "H" plate (H833 UNP from memory) - i can get the VIN at some point if it helps?
Have to admit, that non-airbag dash in Midnites car is a tempting thought!

Re: midnite's 800 collection
Is it a late registered car with the short bumpers and blocky boot lid badging?

Re: midnite's 800 collection
Look at pictures of Mk1 cars. Earlier examples slope off quite quickly from the bottom of the front and rear lamp clusters down to the rubbing strips. Later examples have huge flat extensions that push the face of the bumpers out further and thus make these examples longer than earlier cars.scoobyh123 wrote:

Re: midnite's 800 collection
Yeah the "Montego" style bumpers, or short bumpers were changed at chassis number 244245 and replaced with longer or I believe whats known as NAS or North American Spec minus the running lights to give the car more presence. That chassis number change took place around July/August 1989 which if memory serves was G plate?, H would have been aug 90 to july 91.

Re: midnite's 800 collection
24v and 16v badges came in 1990 along with a change of badging script so you shouldn't have them.midnite wrote:i always liked the short bumpers, and didn't really realise they were thinner, thats why i always wanted a e f g plater sterling, wow the penny has just dropped.

Re: midnite's 800 collection
Austin-Rover & Dave - i see what you mean, it's never really occurred to me before. The "longer" bumpers are similar to Mk2 bumpers aren't they? In side-view/profile at least. To be honest i never really noticed until now and thought there was no more reasoning to it than Rover had run out of Mk1 (short) bumpers too early before the end of the production run and simply used some previously stock piled Mk2 bumpers to get the cars out - it is the sort of thing they did back then in any case!
Midnite - 24v badge, if - if - if!
If you PM me your name/address so i can post it and
If it's still on there ( i think it is) and
If i can get it off without damaging it (or the plinth behind it) and
If it's in good condition
then i'll happily post it to you!
The car is in the garage at the moment (reversed in for several reasons) and only has the front pipe on it in terms of an exhaust (no cat at all even though it was originally a cat model) so is a bit on the loud side. I don't really fancy terrorising the surrounding residents on a sunday but if it turns out to be a noisy day (but dry) then i should get away with it. If not then it will have to be a week day when fewer people are around.
I have some trim tape somewhere too so i'll put some new tape on (after cleaning the old stuff off) so all you have to do is clean your plinth (meths or IPA/alcohol wipes are good), line it up, peel the backing and stick it on, preferably on a warm day or with the aid of a hairdryer to improve adhesion.
As for some cars not getting the 24v badge, i was always led to believe some owners asked them to be left off so as to discourage the boy racers and "Beastie Boys" of the time (from trying to race it as it was a 24v and from stealing the badges respectively) but who knows - maybe some dealers couldn't be bothered to fit them or Rover didn't send them or some other lame excuse for forgetting to fit them when it was new.
Dave - when in 1990 did the 24v badges come in? Both cars here a "H" reg which was 1990/91 and unless i'm mistaken that would make them both 1990 model year so in theory they should both have them? I think my idea above still applies as i'm sure there were a lot of cars that didn't have the badges relating to number of valves, even post 1990.

Re: midnite's 800 collection
On the big bumper/small bumper issue, I believe that rover decided to go with the large to standardise production as the cars built for America had the large from day 1 due to legislation in california and impact resistance, although American bumpers were made from polyurethane and European out of polycarbonate.
