thanks forJim, odd about the lack of circlip groove. Perhaps with the extra length of that driveshaft it's just not needed, even at full suspension droop.

I've often wondered if a PG2 could be mated to a T-series, would be very useful on the turbo to eliminate torque-steer!
I know of a 220 turbo coupe in Sweden that has a pg2 fitted.

Jim, I am probably dismantling my 180bhp box during the winter so get prepared for incoming questions. :D

Have they added the intermediate output shaft and equal length driveshafts from the 827 (or perhaps two equal length driveshafts from other 2/400 models) do you know Henrik?

I'm looking forward to all your questions and Jims answers, also enjoyed the bits about the SRS ECU, i know very little about the SRS system (and thankfully don't need to!) but still interested in the diagnostic process involved. ;) :D

No worries Henrik! More idle curiosity/interest on my part but it would make a nice conversion. :D

I think the PG1 and 2 internals are basically the same, from memory the casing is the main differences, I will find some pictures from the workshop manual.

The basic layout is certainly the same Jim. I'd be really instersted to know if the components are in fact the same bits but also if the diff on the PG1 and PG2 is the same diff as used in the PL5 (the Honda 4-speed auto-box) as i'd really like to fit a Tor-Sen diff to my autobox.

This goes waaaaaaaay beyond where I want to be with my Vitesse. Absolutely awesome.
And whilst we're talking about PG1 gearboxes  , does anybody know what the bearing numbers are for the 7 principal ones that are needed, please?

Also, is it possible to upgrade the 5th gear to something higher ratio?

Hope this isn't considered to be off thread, if it is, I apologise and will open or add on somewhere else. :)

Use the 5th gear mainshaft and countershaft gears from a diesel car with a PG1 - 220, 420, 620 diesels. The 5th gear on those is much higher than the petrol ones.

Dave

That what I have in my current box, it is great for motorways. Top speed on the rolling road was over 170mph. The diesels though were the earlier type PG1s with single countershaft bearing so I think from memory can only be used in this type, I changed the final drive ratio too. I have the ratios I used written down somewhere.
There are several different bearings used for the same position on different versions of the PG1 depending on age and casing type, the only sure way is to get the box apart and measure them and take numbers direct from the bearings. PG1 diff bearings are all the same though 6208 40 x 80 x 18 mm

170! 8)
Ok, that's with all the other work you've done as well, but, WOW! Not going to get that from mine with it's rattly top for a while.
Thanks for the info, I was hoping there was a definative answer so I could get the bearings needed prior to disassembly and a quicker rebuild. Never mind.

They probably sell a basic kit that covers most cars with the proviso that "alternative/additional bearings may be required".

Either that or they will specify gearbox serial numbers (most of which have worn off or peeled off by now) so it's down to the victim - errrrrrr, customer to guess the right one in advance!  :D

They may look the same, but the main difference is that the 2.7 manual uses taper needle roller bearings for the diff to casing, not the conventional ball bearings.
There was a very detailed good thread on one of the Rover forums (rovertorque??) about a guy who put the Torsen in his 2.7 manual, or the 2.7 bearings in his 2.0 Turbo. Involved wuote a bit of machining.

That forum has gone Dave. Its where I got all the information for my Vitesse Coupe gearbox rebuld a few years ago.
I remember the post, and how the guy was machining his own shims in his workshop.

If I can find the historical websire link (thats if they logged their stuff) i will post it up. Doubtful though. Social Media and hosting costs/Photobucket wiping all images off forums has killed several. Astraownersclub just vanished overnight. Was a very full and informative forum.
