Rusty update.
“I will just take out the petrol tank for a clean, then refit it” was the plan
But that just uncovered lots of rusty parts and brackets that had to be fixed.
It started with the fuel filler pipe, that was rotten but fortunately repairable and revealed some rust in the wheel well.
Behind the fuel filler

Where the cage was welded on the other side burnt away protection

Ground back to bare metal and treated

then wax and stonechip

The fuel tank had a lot more surface rust than I realised, this has taken ages to rub down and treat.

Once the inside is done then the outside will be painted.

I had to remove the front to rear metal fuel and vapour pipes to free off a seized connection in the vice, the pipes and brackets had corrosion. I cleaned the fuel supply and return pipes, treated and painted them, the vapour pipe will not be refitted and will vent at the rear somewhere undecided yet
All the pipe brackets had to be taken back to bare metal

Image

With the tank removed I found corroded handbrake cable brackets and clips

Cleaned the cables, removed all the metal brackets and stripped back to bare metal, treated and painted.

What Henrik said Jim ^^^^^

Nothing is ever as easy or problem fee as you plan/hope, good to see some great pics from you getting it sorted though! :D

Thanks Henrik, thanks Dave, a bit more while I am on a roll.
To remove the cables I took down the exhaust heat shields, the backs of these were corroded too so cleaned and treated them. Front one was full of oil and dirt so needed a clean anyway
They are thin galvanised steel and being heat shields I couldnt paint them so just wire brushed them and a coat of Hydrate80 for now to see how they last

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Removing the heat shields revealed some hidden corrosion under the floor, only surface rust fortunately

A handbrake cable bracket bolt had seized in a captive nut so required careful drilling and rethread

I havent cleaned inside the fuel tank, purposely leaving this to last so once cleaned it can go straight back on the car, filled and sealed air tight to reduce risk of it sat exposed to moisture in the air, problem is also with a baffled tank how to fully remove all the bits of muck and grit left over once the cleaning liquid is drained, there is no drain plug and none of the openings or pipes are at a lowest point, so no matter what position the tank is in there is always a pocket of fuel left inside, I had to shake the tank for ages to get the last of the fuel out the pump opening.
My plan after the cleaning treatment is jet washing and compressed air several times then get some oily vapour or fluid all over the inner surfaces before refitting
This is inside the tank
Image

Image

As a morale boost while dealing with the corrosion I started making this

Image

A really unsociable unsilenced side exit exhaust option for special occasions that will look something like this when finished

Image

It needs a dedicated mount so started on a support bracket

Image

Image

Image

just waiting for a powerflex mount to arrive then finish the shape and weld on rods.

Great stuff Jim - are you planning an exhaust valve so it's cockpit controlled or just fit the sidepipe as and when needed?
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks Adrian,
Thanks Dave, no valve, it will require the rear section removing when I want to use the side exit, it will more likely be a case of remove the side exit to fit the quieter rear section for track days with the simple side exit on the car most of the time.
Thanks Marc, hope to have some progress on the new rear section soon.
Currently painting the garage floor in sections around the car on stands, cabinets, parts etc, old paint had broken up and the concrete dust when scooting around on the laying down board has become a problem, its 40+ degrees in there these sunny days too so progress will be a little slower till the floor is done and fully dried.
Cheers all keep safe

You're planning on terrifying your neighbours a lot then Jim! :P

In this heat, floor paint will dry quickly and because concrete is a thermal mass, the residual heat overnight will help to cure it to an extra tough shell if it's a resin based floor paint.

Might pay to use a board under each axle stand for the first few months after painting as it still cures slowly after the initial 24-48 hour cure.
Cheers,
Dave

Bit more progress

Fuel tank is cleaned inside using the Bilt Hamber fuel tank cleaners, its good stuff but because this tank is 68 litres it needed a lot of dilution to completely fill it but was still left with a couple of small pockets of air at the top, so went out and sloshed it around every few hours, left it for a couple of days but it had probably done all it could after 24hrs

Before cleaning

Image

Image

after cleaning

Image

Image

After draining, bare steel reacts so fast to water, I put about half a litre of Dexron oil in there and blew it around the inside to give it some protection and prevent it rusting again as it looks like it will be next summer before the tank is fully filled with fuel and used again.

Painted the outside and got some bolts plated ready to reassemble.

All new genuine parts where still available, the rest are painted and plated to be as close to new as possible

Image

Tank took a bit more cleaning and flushing, I had put about .5 litre of oil inside to stop it rusting again but when it came to flushing the oil out diluted with petrol it lifted more grit and rubbish from the interior surfaces and seams. I think it will need a couple of fuel filter changes in the first few hundred miles of use.

Image

Reassembled ready to fit

Image

Tank finally back on the car with new tank strap rubbers, new hoses, bolts and fixings.

Image

Image

The repaired filler pipe refitted with new hoses and clips, there is one more pipe and a plastic cover to go on once the modified breather is done, the vapour pipe that used to go to the engine bay charcoal canister will now vent through a filter near the filler cap.

Image

At last the tank is finished and back in the car, this took far to long due to the rust but should be good for another 20 years.
