Took the 827 Vitesse for a cruise the other day and took some snaps. Can't get enough haha:
Last weekend i went to a little youngtimer meet with the 827 Vitesse:

Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
Thanks Marc, the pic shot from the rear where the Vitesse is next to the MGZS answer a question for me. I fitted Dunlop 205s to my Vitesse but I found them very wide and fat from an aestethic point of view, but it looks just the same on your immaculate Vitesse. So I can rest now!

Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
Hello!
Quick question, my 827 Vitesse had a new coolant tank fitted about 10 years ago but that starts to show it's age. Not leaking yet but I don't like surprises. I want to chance it for the Volvo expansion tank. Could someone please tell me if the tank in the other images and link is the correct one?
Cheers!

Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
That's the one Marc. You'll also need a short length of 19mm bore heater hose and a 19-16mm reducer and obviously the relevant hose clips.
If memory serves, the stub comes out of the bottom is vertical and the "drain" hose that feeds the radiator and water pump on the car is designed for an angled one on the Rover. It's also not quite long enough to reach the centre of the new tank so i put about 5"/130mm of 19mm bore hose on the bottom of the tank and then joined it to the Rover original hose with the 19-16mm reducer.
You can continue to use the Rover expansion tank cap, it's the same thread.
If you look, you can just see the two hose clips (Jubilee clips) below the tank for the 19-16mm reducer, also note i used a Volvo cap rated at 16.5psi/1.1bar (Many are 23psi or 1.5bar) as the tank came with it and the Rover cap (16psi) i had was leaky. You can also see the brack Dusan (Alucard2007) kindly made for me in about 30 seconds by beating a piece of sheet steel around and drilling a couple of holes in then trimming the tank end to make a tongue for the tank to sit on.
You could happily use one from a breakers yard and if you got it yourself, cut the hose so you had a bit of the 19mm bore hose already on the bottom.

Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
Those PSI numbers are of some concern, Dave. Is there a blue/green Volvo cap that looks similar but in the range of 14 -15 PSI?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
There was a grey one rated at 1 bar or 15psi Mark, dropped from the range a long time ago i believe. Now it's just 1.1 and 1.5 bar, 16.5 and ~23psi respectively.
If your cooling system is in good condition and the car doesn't overheat, it won't be a problem. These days you have to inspect the Volvo cap to find the pressure as they stopped colour-coding them same as they did with fuel filler caps. Once upon a time there was red for 4-star/leaded fuel only, then they introduced a green one for unleaded capable (but you still had to check to see if it had a cat and then not use leaded) and finally there was a black one for diseasel cars.
All colours have been dropped (certainly on the 7/9xx ranges) and the only new one available is black, suitable for all models.
If all else fails with the cap, just use the Rover one rated at 1 bar if memory serves. If we lived in a hot country i'd say go for a higherh rated cap to raise the boiling point but unless the temperature gets so high that it's going to expel through the cap under normal circumstances (i.e. the cap isn't faulty and they do go faulty, frequently! I have a Rover cap on my 760 at the moment as the Volvo style cap i fitted a few years ago failed and was leaking coolant out) then the higher pressure rating won't make any difference.

Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
The reason I ask is because I have the blue/green one on my original (and therefore aged) Rover expansion tanks under the the belief that the cap is of a lower PSI and therefore does not pressure the tank to the same limits. If that is not right then I am increasing the stress and should desist immediately.

Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
It doesn't quite work that way Mark - i can see what you're saying though. If anything, you're actually safer running at a higher cap pressure than a lower one, providing the rest of the cooling system is working correctly.
The cap doesn't create the pressure, merely holds it in. A bit simplistic but for the purposes of explaining, that'll do. In other words, it holds the pressure in so the boiling point of water is raised above the 100C accepted boiling point. With a 92C 'stat for example, there's only 8C more before water would boil if it wasn't pressurised - last thing you'd want on a hot day is for your coolant to boil so a cap not only holds the coolant in but raises the boiling point so the boiling coolant doesn't discharge through the cap leaving you with no coolant at all.
I can't remember the exact figures or how to work it out but a 1.5bar/23psi cap raises the boiling point to about 130-140C, a 1bar/15psi (or even 16psi) cap raises it to about 115-120C - these figures may be a bit out but show the relationship. If your car is happily running at 92C with the 'stat and cooling fans working as they should, no leaks etc then it's never going to reach that sort of pressure so the actual rating of the cap is irrelevant until it gets seriously hot but you'd either have a faulty cap or other problems if the cap started letting the pressure out.
Hope that makes sense, been a long day and my brain cell isn't firing on all cylinders!
