Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
It has been a while sinds my last update.
I will start were i left of. november 2018.
I had to go to work in the port of Rotterdam early in the morning to visit a vessel of the company. The morning sun and the industrial setting made me take some shots.
The driver side window of my 827 started to have a mind of its own. It failed to operate more often so after some trouble shooting, the motor was replaced with a good used one.
The brown layer in the door is not rust but isolation.
When the plastic was removed, the old sealend layer came of like a dry cookie. Fresh sealend whas installed.
I knew it allready, the speakers did not had the nicest sound anymore so i decided to install new speakers.
New speaker.
All back together.
Last year at the NEC show in november i was honored that i could ad my Vitesse to the stand.
The car must be inside the NEC hall at thursday, so me and my mate took the evening ferry on wednesday night.
Early morning we arrived in Harwich.
Driving on the left is easier every time.
After arrival in the hall i gave my Vitesse a quick detail wipe down.
Friday, show time!!
I was together with two other 800's on the stand. Very rare and lovely ones!!
Immaculate MK1 827 Sterling with a blue interior. Wow!!
And a lovely MK2 825 Sterling KV6. With a lovely owner as well. Had loads of laughs!!
Some other cars on the stand.
Very special Rover 75 with a lot of history.
Next to my Rover 827 Vitesse, i was also in love with this American bohemoth. What a machine!
When i walked past or towards my Rover i noticed we 800 lovers are not the only ones that like them!
We decided to leave monday so i let my 827 sleep inside the secured NEC hall during the sunday to monday night.
And back to the ferry that will bring us to the Netherlands. It was a great show!!
The next update was march 2019. I big gap i know but that has a reason.
Last winter, my Vitesse was not put in hibernation because i met a lovely person. So i realy needed the Vitesse as a daily. Don't worry, i looked after her very well! When the weather was to bad i did not drive off course.
We even used the fastback as a lorry at some times. Some large cabinets and other furniture were swallowed by the huge boot.
In march it is also always time for the MOT. It was with ease. Even the emmissions was very good the garage told me.
Healthy motor!
I took my chance to recoat the bottom of the Vitesse with wax that prevents rust.
Sadly, my my friend and mechanic noticed a small rust spot in the left sill. This will be repeared as you will see in the later update. We also noticed that a rubber cover in the steering system was dried out. New ones are installed.
As said, my 827 Vitesse needed some attention even though the MOT was easaly achieved.
Since i own the Vitesse, the seatbelt holder did not work properly. It was on my to do list but when i met my girlfriend, i felt an urge to sort this out. Luckily i had some spares. The were grey so we had to change out the covers and result.
Safe and working seatbelts!
Inside there was a small plastic part that was broken of.
The rubber steering covers in the front were also replaced.
As said, there was a rust spot in the left sill that a mate of mine profesionaly repaired. I did not have the tools myself and he is much more skilled in this than i am as you will see.
The rust spot was cut out and the steel was cleaned. Also with the use of acid and steel brushes.
Then, a layer of copper paint was put on that protects the steel from rust but does not interfere with your weld.
Inner sill redone.
Welding:
Outside:
Even with punches to make it look original.
Then of course a rust preventing primer was added and paint.
Result! My mate has done a cracking job!
After all this i coated the sill from the inside with wax.
In april 2019 another issue that i wanted to attend whas the roof outside lining on both sides. About six ago i already removed some minor spots but with far les skill and know how. I also used to little amount of paint and average primer. Now, with the help of my mate, we did it properly this time. This is how we found it.
With the right tools (even diamant grinding wheels) we cleaned out everything,
Right side:
After this, rust resistant primer was applied.
After one week of drying, i stated the finish with colour.
And clear of course:
Somewere i did not do it properly because when it dried up it was not pretty.
So after some time, i re did the areas.
So at all four doors i re did what was in sight after the rubber strip is installed. I only photographed two.
I sanded it back to the rust resistant primer, added a normal primer to provide a good base for the colour.

Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
After all this, my 827 Vitesse whas ready for Pride of Longbridge!! As i am sure you know this was on saturday 13 april.
My girlfriend joined my and Betsy (that is how my girlfriend calls my 827). Thursday night we set sail to England to arrive friday morning.
First we had some lovely breakfast and had a wonder round through an amazing city.
Then we drove to Redditch where we gave the old Rover a drink.
After the drive from the coast to the hotel in Redditch it was time to give my 800 a bath. All ready for the Pride of Longbridge.
Saturday morning it was that time!
Before we left i asked some passers by if they could make a picture of us with the Rover.
It whas an awesome day!
The next day, sunday, we went to Colchester because we wanted to go to a castle. However, we were routed throug narrow streets and could not find the way to the castle.
A bit disapointing but also funny we decided to head to harwich and have a walk there.
And then in line for the boat back to The Netherlands. It was a great weekend!
As said before i have met someone and we live together! This means also new accomodation for my new Rovers.
During the moving it was great to have such big Rover cars! They are like lorries!
My girlfriend fully understands my hobby and she has one her self. She drives a bike. We decided to rent a garage box to store her bike, my 827 Vitesse and spare parts. Of course it had to be decorated with pictures and posters!
Behind the Vitesse there was space enough for spares.
On the 3rd of may 2019, my 827 Vitesse turned 30 years old!! My girlfriend suprized my by decorating the car!
:} (:P) (tu)
In the spring of 2019 we did a photoshoot of us with the cars. Quite some nice pictures were made.
The photographer even took a drone with him.
On the 12th of may we went to the Oldtimer Festival in Zandvoort on the race track. But before that i gave the Vitesse its annual big clean. Snow foam the car, wash the car, claybar the car, wash the car again, dry the car and then apply meguiar wax! So on the morning of 12 may, the Vitesse looked pretty nice.
At the show the diversity was big.
We were at the stand of a big Dutch car magazine. Also one that had an article about my 800!
A lot of people liked the Vitesse. Makes you proud!

Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
A while ago i noticed a crack in the windscreen. It can happen to older windows and i noticed longer ago it started to de-laminate. This all contributed to the crack. Anyway, green windows are quite easy to find for a Rover 800 but that is not the case for brons. Gues what colour my windows have. After quite some time and some mistakes by the shipper, a window arrived at a glass company ready to be installed.
23 may was the day that a new front window was fitted.
New window was prepared and the old one removed.
Two gentlemen worked like archaeologists to make sure they did not damage anything.
Old window. No way back.
Even below the window there was absolutly no rust! Happy times. You just never know do you?
Glue on the new window.
Placement of the new window.
After all this, the Vitesse had to dry for some time before i could take it home.
Nice!
Sunday the 2nd of june 2019 we went to Switzerland on holiday. We visited a mate of mine were i bought my Rover SD1. The journey to Switzerland was hot but smoot.
And then Switzerland!!
We stayed in the area around Halwilersee! Beautifull!
City of Luzern. Lovely place!
Of course we went swimming in the lake.
After a midweek we went back and to drive the Vitesse on the autobahn is a treat. Good roads and hardly any traffic. Drive fast and in great comfort. Awesome motor!
Immidiately after arrival i washed the Vitesse so it could be stored nice and clean.
During the trip back from Switzerland there was a small stone that hit the window. Very normal i know but this one i thought i wanted it to be checked by a spezialized company. I could not go myself so my girlfriend was kind enough to take my 827 Vitesse to the glass company. They told that the ''damage'' was to small but if i wanted it filled with wax, they could do that. I wanted that so they started working.
Applying wax:
UV light to dry:
All is well now again!
Before Switzerland i noticed a small vibration at speed. I brought the Vitesse to a tire specialist were the balanced the wheels. They loved it and they could ballance the wheels.
Also under braking, i noticed a vibration. Quite certain it was because of warped brake discs. They were old so no problem there. Replaced both the discs and brake pads on the front.
Old ones removed:
New ones:
No more vibration!

August edition Marc, Pg25, headed "Which 80s exec would you choose?" Not sure if it's your Rover or the one in the feature last month, had acid dropped in my eyes today so the vision is still a bit blurry.Marc-827-Vitesse wrote: ↑Thu Aug 15, 2019 10:40 pm@ Scoobyh123: Hey nice to talk to you again! Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
Thanks Marc, normal (or what passes for normal these days!) service is resumed thankfully.
I'll have to have a look for HubNuts reviews, i've recently found another one called "idriveaclassic" who some have described as a "female HubNut" who is a young (30-something at a rough guess) lady who actually knows a fair bit about the cars she is reviewing.
While HubNuts reviews are (generally) interesting and informative, so are hers and she has a couple of other things in her favour such as a really nice voice and a very charismatic presenting style. The rest, you can decide on yourself!

Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
Hard for me to say as I've never driven an SD1.
He has his tastes as do we all?
For me I would need to test comparable cars. So probably a twin plenum Vitesse SD1 and a MK1 827 Vitesse? Both with manual boxes for me.
My dad always told me I wouldn't like an SD1 as they felt old compared to an 800.
