oh no not another one for f**ks sake1 update 20/12/15

Post by midnite » Fri Dec 04, 2015 9:29 pm

ha haaaaaaaaaaaa, look what i got, well this is the eBay car that was for sale, turned out it was a full option 6 dial early mk1 sterling auto, stored in a wet leaking wooden garage including the roof falling on it, for 15 years, the car is finished I'm afraid, but has a 90k motor and beige leather that stinks, but it has the holy grail of 800 options, an option I've been hunting for, for a long time, the electric rear seat option, also has electric front driver passenger heated memory seats, and aircon and cruise.

mg mal and i fetched it today and its sat on his trailer at his place to be delivered at mine tomorrow.

here are a couple of pics

reg number is f964 aok

Blimey!   I thought that was my old one at first glance! Mine was silver (given the fact that one needs washing it might be silver as well) and my reg was F965 EGK. Looking at it quickly, you could be forgiven for reading F964 AOK as that if you're used to seeing it.The G and O are very similar anyway and the F96* **K bits are the same so gave me a bit of a shock!

May as well nobble the headlamp washers for yours too and if it's got it, the full VCM/Trip Computer package including all the sensors and the 6-dial dash.

Unless i'm mistaken that's also got the bronze glass in it too - very rare!
Cheers,
Dave

almost come back to haunt you dave, the headlining has mould on it, as if someone got a can of shaving foam and chucked handfuls onto it, yes its got the computer, i wonder how hard it would be to put the 6 dial into the later mk1 like my sli.

I thought it had Matt! Should be a fairly easy transplant of the 6-dial pods but don't forget the extra oil pressure sender and whatever wiring is needed - should only need one extra wire for the pressure sensor as the switch will still operate the warning light.

As for the trip computer and VCM - that's a lot more work! Has this one got cruise as well? Might be easier to swap the entire loom and the "good" bits (6-dial dash, trip comp, rear seats etc) and create another "Imposter" as i christened my recent 827 SLi as it had leather and the 6-spoke Vitesse 17" alloys from new so was nearly but not quite a Sterling.
Cheers,
Dave

One thing Matt and I were discussing, is whether or not the dash from this one is the same as the dash in my non airbag 1993/4 Mk2?

I couldn't say for sure Mal but there's a pretty safe bet that the Mk1 dash is the same as the Mk2 non-airbag dash.

Dave

i opened the glove box and there is stuff in there that has degraded with damp, it looked like a grow bag plus twigs plus some paracetomol and bic pens all mixed in, i opened it gingerly, it dropped down with the weight and i shot back out of the car bloody quick i can tell thee.

Not quite so bad then - the way you said the first bit with the weight and everything i thought a family of rats were nesting in the glovebox!

Out of interest, do you plan on swapping the headlamp washers onto your SLi if they work?
Cheers,
Dave

well one of them is missing the top bit of the washer bit, but the twr bumpers haven't got the hole to mount them in either, so don't know, might do dave.

hooked the galaxy upto the battery tonight and the interior lights came on, turned the lights on dash lights up, its been in the damp garage for so long even the speedo cluster has damp on the inside of the plastic screen.

Hmm, okay Matt - if you don't use them can you let me know please? Might have a home for them. :D

It sounds as if it's been in very damp storage either a damp garage or outside for a long time! Damp inside the instrument cluster sounds dodgy, will mean removing and drying the instrument pack out, cleaning it etc before fitting it to your SLi. Worth it though, they do look better on the Mk1s than the round dials which oddly i think suit the Mk2 better. Might pay to check the instruments all work before swapping them though and make sure you get the speedo drive sensor from the top of the gearbox as some early speedos would only work with one type of sensor. Later speedos seem to work with all types which is weird but there you go, it's a Rover thing.
On the subject of drying things out, when you remove the speedo sensor leave it somewhere warm like the airing cupboard to dry out thoroughly as they seem to absorb moisture. I quite regularly have to oven-bake the Sterling sensor at about 60-70C for about 40-45 minutes to dry it out. Worked every time so far but always seems to happen if i lay the car up for some time.
Cheers,
Dave

i must admit dave looking at the 6 dial lit up earlier, it does look much more 80s than the round ones in my sli, and the mileage is virtually the same on both clocks 90k ish, i wonder why rover dropped it in favour of the 4 dial set up, it looks more sophisticated for sure.
