i will mal, i put the leads on it last night and it lit up inside, dash and lights work n stuff, but none of my other 800 keys would work in the ignition, so got to wait until matey sends the keys on to me, when i get 10 min i will have a good look under the sills, and round the rubbers, and other places, but nothings going to happen to it for a while as got to much work related shit to do first.

I had heard the reason Rover changed to the round dials was cost. However.................

...........when you consider they used the same instruments in the late SD1s, Maestro/Montego ranges, Sherpa, Range Rover etc then it could be to do with fitting in with Honda who used the round ones. This would be particularly true of the 2/4/600 ranges that used almost exclusively Honda parts with Rover badges on the outside at the time. Just a shame Rover was sold to BMW a few years later!

As for that headlining, that's organic man! Scrape the white stuff off and sell it to a hippy as magic mushrooms and you might even recover the cost of the car!

The headlining may be mouldy but it's not sagging.... strange.

small update guys, had no time at all to mess about wirth the sterling, guy never sent me the keys so I've had to smash the ignition off to turn the wheel on it, shuffled it about this week so i could start to assess it, any how here are some pics, i think it shows she is a breaker, she too far gone for anyone to spend what it needs to even get it back to mot standard, underneath is solids but badly surfaced rusted, doors are gone, arches are gone, corners of roof are scabby, wings grotty, sills have been got at and stacks of underseal on them, brakes are past there best, exhaust is rusty rusty.

i allready got the fuel computer in my sli, mines mint, this one got a little bloom in the screen, the stereo is ok but I'm after a better but periodish kenwood.

Still worth hanging onto the VCM Matt, for a spare unit or even spares if nowt else. The OE head unit in the Mk1s seemed to be much better quality kit than the cr@p fitted to the Mk2 with the exception of the "Premium" sound package in the early Mk2s and available on very late Mk1s which was made by Clarion and also fitted to Range Rovers. I was lucky enough to find one with Rover logos/abdges etc on rather than the Range Rover variant.

It's Vehicle Condition Monitor Dean, as far as i remember from my Mk1 Sterling handbook, it only referred to it once or twice by the full name, the rest of the time it said "VCM" and that's what i've always called it. That or trip computer but by rights the Trip Computer was the "slimline" version that only showed the fuel consumption, speed (average and instant), miles driven, fuel used/remaining etc.

Hope that explains it and sorry for any confusion :oops:
