Yes it's the original bar, just with all the rust sanded off and painted red.

Wheels will definitely be going silver, just trying to decide on powder coat or paint.

Have you still got that breaker with a good roof?

A suggestion with the wheels - try paint first. That way if you don't like the colour it's a lot cheaper to change! I used this on my coupé wheels with several coats of gloss lacquer :

Bit of advice though - once you've sanded all the black off them and got back to bare metal, wait for all the dust to settle then wipe it off the wheels with something like meths to degrease the wheels at the same time. I hurried it and thinking the dust had settled, blew it off with an airline blowgun. I didn't realise this stirred up a lot more dust than was on the wheel and some of it settled while the paint and lacquer was drying so some of my wheels have a rough appearance/feel where they should have been smooth as silk.

I won't make the same mistake with the next set of wheels i refurbish! :oops: :wink: :D

Not a bad job if the wheels are in good condition and corrosion free.

And assuming you have decent tools to do it with.

Personally I let my brother do it for me as it's his job these days. :)

Good point Chris - i'd been quoted about £85/wheel locally to powder coat them and that was without a primer and lacquer. I would also have to sandblast them myself. Although i've got a sandblast gun and some grit, i haven't tried it yet :oops: and to be honest, didn't want to "experiment" with a set of half decent wheels to start with. That said, a couple of them were pretty rough when i started!

Next time i do a set of wheels, i'll set up my home-made sandblast cabinet and try it out on the worst wheel of the set. That way if i do louse it up, i've only lost half a wheel as it would be half dead to start with! These wheels were selling for stupid money at the time though and although i got this set including carriage for less than i had seen just one wheel for, i didn't want to risk one of them as it would potentially cost me more to replace one than the whole set!

What are the main differences between powder coated and painted finishes?

Had all refurbs of mine done with paint in silver sparkle (original)

That's a very good price. I can get them done for just under £40 a wheel but that's mates rates through my brother. Typically you're looking £60-75 normally.

I did hear of a place in Brum doing them for £25 a wheel. No idea if it's still running but shipping would remove a lot of the savings.

This was about 18months ago, so they may have put the prices up now.

The price included blasting, damage repair (limited to sanding filling and smoothing - any welding would be extra) prime and powder coat inside and out. Even the centre caps were done!

The colour match wasn't perfect although good enough for me, but the finish is excellent.

Powder coating gives a a more durable "stove enameled" type coating, but metallics finishes don't come out as well as flat colours. For an exact match paint and laquer would be much better, but less durable.

The big difference is paint is errr.....well.....it's paint :D and powder coating is very fine granules/powder of plastic which sticks to the workpiece (in our case the wheels) as it is at earth potential and the powder is positively charged with a high voltage. The powder is then cured by taking the work through an oven for 10-15 minutes depending on the plastic at which point it all flows together and produces a high gloss, baked on, plastic finish.
You can get all sorts of colours and finishes with powder coating including crackle finish, smooth, matt, high gloss etc and unless the coating gets chipped (very hard to do as it's so tough) it will stay on there forever and a day as it were. If it does get chipped and water gets underneath, the resultant corrosion will lift the plastic.
Also powder coating is a bit more forgiving of surface imperfections as it is slightly thicker than paint and less likely to get damaged by having tyres changed.

Give them bare alloys and it's £20/wheel (drop off and pickup yourself or pay for you own courier both ways)

I would suggest doing your own strip or sandblast as their prep work can be variable.

Both brothers of mine had 2 sets each of 15" MX5 wheels done by them.

3 sets were perfect. 1 set had some deep corrosion that they just sandblasted off and powdercoated straight away no sanding or filing of the pockets.

You get what you pay for I guess ;-)

James vs Rover 800 front calipers Round 2!

I was pissed off last time as i thought id fixed the sticking caliper, only for it to stick 'on' and start binding while i was driving 40 miles home from my Dads garage (where i have my other cars and tools).

During the week i ordered front caliper rebuild kits ,including pistons, from www.biggred.co.uk. I also bought a new master cylinder, which came up on ebay for £40 and was new old stock, so i couldnt say no. I was having a problem where if i was holding the car on the brakes at a junction or traffic lights, the pedal would be firm and then start sinking towards the floor. So i figures it must be master cylinder, as the fluid wasnt leaking from anywhere else in the system so must be bypassing the seals in the master cylinder.

I also had a major result getting a pair of rust free mk1 Rover 800 front wings for £40!!!! I love ebay, and Rover 800's. Parts are for peanuts.

On Friday night i had to drive the 40 miles back over to my Dads without using the brakes. The brakes did work, i just didnt want to give the front right caliper a reason to stick on again. I was doing well until and suicidal deer jumped in front of the car and i had to hit the brakes hard. A royal pain in the butt. I didnt hit it, but it was close. Im glad i was only doing 40mph. It was a national speed limit and i would ordinarily have been going quicker and doubt i could have avoid it. Anyhow, minimal brake applications later and the car was safely at the garage.

Car in the air and the calipers off again. I got the old pistons out ok, cleaned up the insides and fitted the new seals, pistons and dust seals. Much easier than on the Rover SD1 where the dust seals are bonded to thin metal rings that bend when your trying to fit them.

I removed the old master cylinder and was surprised by how much crap there was in the reservoir. I have no idea how old the fluid was but im guessing very!

All back together and bled up. I also cleaned up the interior.

I drove home tonight and the brakes are so much better than before. I got to test them when another deer ran out in front of me on the A264 and i locked up avoiding it! Feckers.
