Re: Mk1 827 Si Saloon
Today i inspected the front brakes, to see why the front offside was getting so hot. I got the wheel off and undid the bolts between the caliper and the guide pins. Surprisingly the guide pins were fine and moved very easily, so that's not the problem. I then realised that the pads wouldnt come out of the carrier. They were really jammed and i had to use a hammer to get them out!!!
I took the carrier off and replaced the stainless steel plates that the pads sit on with new ones i bought. Glad i did. I also filed down the steel backing plates of the pads so they slide more easily.
I checked the piston moved freely in the caliper itself. It came out ok, but was really tough to push back in, even with a clamp. I lifted the rubber dust cover back and there is some evidence of minor corrosion. I cleaned this off with some wet and dry, but really i think i will need new calipers. I put it all back together and it works fine now.
I have new discs and pads on the way, so when they arrive ill fit all of those and renew the fluid too.
In the meantime ive been using it almost daily just for the fun of it. My girlfriend even likes it and prefers it to my Lexus. It helps that she learnt to drive in her dads mk2 827 sterling.
Tomorrow im going to the Rover SD1's 40th & Rover 800's 30th at Cowley, Oxford at the new Mini plant. 2 shows in 2 weeks. Not bad!

Re: Mk1 827 Si Saloon
Congrats on your purchase of a nice example of a Mk1 James. As far as i remember, the only difference between a Mk1 and Mk2 front wing is the indicator hole. As such, if you could find a Mk1 wing with a good front end and a decent Mk2 wing to get the back end (where the Mk1 wings seem to rot) and some bodywork ninja to graft the two good bits together you would then have a wing you could use.
Does your radio work ok? Often what would happen is the solder joints inside the aerial amplifier (bolted under the parcel shelf) would fail causing inoperative HRW and no radio reception. Once the amplifier is out of the car, it's easy to dismantle it and see the connectors that need resoldering - once done you have a working HRW and a radio! Two parrots with one missile job!
Looking forward to following this!

It's a Heated Rear Window Mark - HRW is a lot less to write on a job sheet and a lot less typing though!

Re: Mk1 827 Si Saloon
Today i went to the combined Rover 800 30th Birthday and Rover SD1 40th Birthday event at the Mini factory Cowley. It was a really good day with lots of British Leyland cars turning up, plus some other decent motors. One particularly cool car was a Citroen CX Turbo 2 long wheel base. It had the plush black leather interior. Very nice.
It started out pretty sunny, but then became more overcast. It didnt actually rain though. I took a walk around the Mini exhibition which featured a Mini completely covered in cow/pony hide. God knows how you clean it, may be just give it a brush?
General shots...
Maestro's and a Montego countryman. The blue Maestro was the one with the talking dashboard.
CX Turbo
Mk10 Jag
Cowhide, nice
Inside on the table were a bundle of original dealer brochures. I spent a good while reading the back catalogue of Austin Rover products. So many cars, and yet so few do you see on the road now days. When was the last time you saw a Morris Ital? or a Mk1 Rover 200? or even a Maxi!
I found this mint Tickford Turbo 800 with a number plate similar to mine, so when some space allowed i parked up next to it for some photos. Much shinier than mine, and really shows up how crappy my number plates are!
Then some more photos with other 800s from the 800 forum.
Then sped back south. This car eats up motorway miles, and so responsive. Strangely the radio picks up radio 5 live much better than in my much better and more expensive Lexus. Who'd have thought it?
Anyway, I'm just realising how much I'm going to have to invest to get the body looking decent for shows. It really is pretty grotty when parked next to cleaner better preserved cars.

Doh! Thanks Dave - I forgot the rear screen element is tied in with the aerial...(or even IS the aerial?)scoobyh123 wrote:It's a Heated Rear Window Mark - HRW is a lot less to write on a job sheet and a lot less typing though!
James - lovely pics, good to see your car next to its reg number stablemate, and whose is the silver Mk1 with 16" prestiges? I always forget how good they look until they crop up in a pic from time to time (even though I have a full set in storage, can't decide which of my cars to put them on!)

Re: Mk1 827 Si Saloon
The rear screen element is the aerial Mark, yes, hence the amplifier unit under the parcel shelf - it splits the radio signal from the dc power so you don't get 12V going into the aerial socket of your stereo.
I believe the Mk1 with the Prestiges is Matts (midnite) but i could be wrong.

Re: Mk1 827 Si Saloon
Thanks for the comments. Yes the prestige wheels are on matts 827sli. They are the rare 16" version. I think the larger diameter wheels really suit the 800. I'm tempted to fit some later 17" Vitesse sport alloys. I like the look of those on the mk1 saloon.
Marc, yes I saw your stunning vitesse at the pride of longbridge. I got some under bonnet shot of yours so I could see what mine is meant to look like. Yours is so clean you could eat your dinner off it!

Re: Mk1 827 Si Saloon
I was just browsing this forum and found a thread dating back to 2013 here .....
viewtopic.php?f=22&t=10394
And on page 2 a load of photos taken from Flikr of Rover 800's. I did a double take when i saw this!
Yes its my car, no idea when or where it was taken. It has steel wheels and hub caps, so someone must have retro fitted the current alloys.
