Very interesting on the boot seal lip repair, renewed the boot seal on my Coupé recently (and just ordered a length of the same stuff to do my Sterling) and found some similar tinworm.

My welding is no longer that good but good to see it can be done with care without removing the rear screen. Well done that man! :D
Cheers,
Dave

It wasn't the welding that was the problem, it was trying not to catch the lower edge of the glass with the wire wheel of the drill!

I would like to replace the rear screen as it has some deep scratches on it highter up. Looks like someone has scraped off a sticker using sand paper? Weird.

Use a piece of scrap plate, bend a lip on the end of it and use it to "mask" the screen while you're having fun with the brush in the drill. :D

Dave

Work has been progressing on the 800. Ive still not got as far as I had hoped, largely due to the weather. It rained on Saturday despite the forecast saying it would remain dry. Bummer really as I was all motivated for an early start. Instead I washed my daily. Long overdue, I think its the first time its been washed in a year!

Sunday arrived and with it some clear skies and low winds so ok for welding.

Image

I started by making small repair sections for the main floor return. I am using 1.2mm zintec which is a pre coated mild steel with anti corrosion covering. Hopefully it will be corrosion resistant. It has the added benefit that it is easy to scribe lines in it.

New patch ready.

Image

Then made repair sections for the inner sill itself.

Also repaired the leading edge then covered in zinc.

Image

Unfortunately I discovered rot setting in on the nearside rear wheel arch. The offside was ok, just minor surface. The nearside had gone a bit further and someone had treated it in the past, so really it needs chopping and replacing. This is where I got lucky. Some time ago I found a listing on ebay for a Montego estate rear wheel arch repair panel. It was £10 and a bit of an impulse buy. I don't even own a Montego but though Id like one in the future, so my hoarding tendency kicked in. The jammy thing is that the profile of the arch lip is identical to the 800.

Image

Image

Here it is held against the offside rear wing the wrong way round. Hard to see in my crappy photo, but the curve radius and flange is spot on.

Image

That's as far as I got. Next weekend I hope to finish the sill and make a start on the wheel arch and inner arch weather permitting!

Bit of luck with wheel arch, saved a lot fabricating.
I suppose Montego panels are as scarce as 800 ones now.

Cracking work mate!

You've made me breath a bit easier about doing my Vitesse. It's about this bad (I think) looking from underneath.

Also what helps is not being afraid to cut large chunks of car out, the bigger the repair panel the easier it is I think.

Looking forward to more progress photos and the finished product. I've been catching up with your SD1 Restoration over on RetroRides - even more excellent work.

Yes pretty jammy with the outer arch. It's only the lip that is the same but even so, much fabrication time saved. Still have to make the inner arch so I have been browsing eBay for possible candiates.

Big repair panels are also my preference but my folder is only 24" long. So the rear part of the inner sill had to be done in 2 lengths so I could fold the return in at the bottom.

I think on these cars it's what's under the under seal that is scary. It's very hard stuff so on the surface it looks great, but when you do find rust it extends quite a distance under what looks to be perfect metal.

Cant remember who's theory this was but it is documented on here somewhere. if you take the opposing front wing to the rear arch then the profiles match.

Not tried this myself but remember VTB telling me about it a long time ago and was confident it works.

I wonder if the same theory works on the Coupé models?

I have heard that is true of the SD1's, didnt know about that on 800's. Ill try it when im next over at the garage as i have a pair of decent front wings to offer up.

I wouldn't be adverse to having some wheelarch sections made up for the 800.

It's such a common failure point that like the sills that were organised by Simon and Mark it makes sense.

Front wings are getting scarce and spendy now so £50-80 for a repair section is good value in my eyes.
