Its a Clarke 160 TM Turbo. Think it was about £300 and it takes the big refillable gas bottles. I get mine from Adams Gas.

Ta :)

I've been looking at the "Wolf" 140, complete kit including small O2 bottle for £170, but i guess it's a not a good idea to "cheap out".?

I'd personally use an argon/co2 mix as the weld flows better. I recently had chance to use a gasless mig and whilst it did the job I couldn't get a good flow so clearly need more practice on that. I use a Clark 150 like I say on argon/co mix gas, it'll do any welding on a car, it'll struggle welding much above 5mm. Welding is a bit of an art that requires practise, power to metal thickness, wire speed and gas flow, full trigger or pulsing trigger. And understanding metal distortion. I have always used a flip mask for over 20 years but recently had a go on an autodim mask, they are brilliant. Beware of arc eye and weld down your back, sleeves, chest otherwise you'll be dancing with no music!!

Ooof , i know about arc eye, experienced that years ago whilst watching someone else weld.. Sand in eyes is the best way to describe the morning after....

Finally finished the welding. Did the finishing plate with 2 holes in for the inner arch then made a flange for the rest of the wheel arch lip and plug welded it to the return i made for the inner arch. All done. Just need to do the seam sealing and stone chip.

I think when you see the work that's needed to make sure the car is right for a long while into the future, it's easy to see why so many have been scrapped and will continue to be?

Yeah especially as already decent cars can be bought for peanuts. Really I should have just scrapped this one, but I couldn't bring myself to do that.

Fair play to you, I'm not blessed with such morals and have scrapped cars needing far less work than yours.

Great stuff. I'm looking forward to the next installment - how to fabricate a Rover 800 from scratch. :D

Well after an embarrassingly long time i am making further progress with the 827. Hard to believe that i havent touched the car for the last 6 months. It has been sat on my Dads drive on axle stands under a car cover waiting patiently until about a week ago when i had to move it for access to the garage. Guess what... its started first time!

Image

First job was to unearth it and see how much my new steel had rusted. Although i sprayed zinc and etch primer on to the bare metal, it isn't weather proof, so i braced for the worst. Fortunately it had held up remarkably well. All that was needed was a light sanding and some wire wheel action. I also applied some Bilthamber hydrate 80 rust converter to the rear side of the new sills.

Image

Once that had gone off it was time to prep all the surfaces for epoxy and stone chip. The epoxy i am using is Jotun Jotamastic 87. It is an extremely hard epoxy 2 pack primer. It is used mostly in the marine industry, but it is becoming more popular with car restorers. Its basically very similar to POR15.

Image

It doesnt like smooth surfaces as it can just de laminate, so i gave all of the metal a good rough key with some grit paper, then degreased with panel wipe.

I brush painted the Jotun 87, messy, but effective and ensures i got into every crevice and seam. It can be sprayed, but its designed for airless spraying, proper industrial setup, but can also be thinned and sprayed in the conventional way. I did 2 coats.

I also did under the rear valance and across the lower front and rear edges of the car, as although these weren't rusty, i thought they might be vulnerable, so while i had the kit out i just did these bits too.

Image

When that had gone off i did some seam sealing at the crucial places. I tried to replicate the factory seams as far as possible.

Image

Then it was masking time. I temporarily fitted the new front wings. These had stone chip on them already, so i used the height of this to set the height that i then followed along the sills to the rear wheel arches. I set the height with the blue masking tape and then used masking tape with thin plastic sheet to mask of the rest. This was not easy as the wind has been very strong, it kept tearing and flapping about wildly. Got there in the end.

Image

The stone chip i am using is UPol Gravitex, which comes in bottles, no mixing required, then you spray it with a shutz gun that comes in the kit. Depending on the pressure you can get real texture of just pretty smooth. I went for texture as i want the sills body colour, but want the textured finish and dont want the body colour coats to smooth it out too much.

I also shot some more on the lower sections of the new wings so the textures will match.

Image

Now im just waiting for the wind to drop so i can do a second coat. This time i will attempt to get less on my face and arms as its a bitch to get off!
