MK1 827 Sterling G reg
About time i posted about my Sterling
Bought it without seeing it in person on eBay in July last year, spoke to the owner and made a decision to bid and i won it!!
Bought my first MK1 F reg 827SI manual in 1996/7 and was hit with the bug until my last 827 in 2005. Needed to get back on the horse
I've done a fair bit to it, mainly recommissioning as it was last on the road in 2005.
It had a speedo change in 1995 with nearly 18k on the original clocks and it now has 15600 on the new clocks, so very low mileage.(i bought it with just over 15k)
Drives and runs great, no tappet rattle and the auto box shifts great.
Things i've done to it mostly by myself, (apart from the tyres, removing and refitting the headlining and sunroof into the car, two man job), but in no particular order..
Headlining removed and re-trimmed.
Sunroof removed and new glass seal fitted.
Sunroof aperture cleaned and rust (very little) treated and POR15'd.
Main beam relay re-soldered to fix main beam issue (dry joints)
Replaced lcd on trip computer.
Replacement 6 clocks fitted as the rev counter and fuel gauge didn't work, but original speedo transferred keeping the correct mileage.
Dyed the steering wheel as it was a little grubby and worn, need to get a better colour though.
Internal fan relay re-soldered (dry joints)
POR15'd edge/join of sills and underside, mainly as a preventive measure.
POR15'd filler neck (still intact and not rusted through).
Bled the brakes 3 times. Incidentally that's all i did with the brakes and it passed the mot including the handbrake!!!!
Flushed and renewed the coolant a number of times, including fitting a Volvo header tank (the original is ok but better to be safe)
Changed the oil and filter twice. (did the second one yesterday)
Changed the atf twice (did the third one yesterday)
Cleaned and painted the scuttle panel, yup... POR15, hardly needed it tbh
New 22 inch wiper blades. 19's are too small.
4 x new tyres (Cooper Zeon) F1 auto centres fitted these... i'm not that good...
New battery.
Fuel filter changed.
New air filter fitted.
6 x new NGK spark plugs fitted.
New rotor arm.
New dizzy cap.
New set of spark plug leads.
New fuel pump fitted (the old one was so dry it didn't spin)
Changed the timing belt, tensioner, spring and water pump.
Cleaned contacts on rear light connections due to corrosion.
90's Kenwood stereo cassette fitted in place of the original stereo due to the original being barely audible at full volume (no external amp, so not that).
New PCV front hose fitted (original collapsed).
New PCV valve fitted.
Leather treatment, hardly needed as in not bad condition.
Replaced some of the "festoon" bulbs with led bulbs.
Repaired the alternator by replacing the rectifier. ( the second hand alternator i bought worked ok, but the original was low mileage so i wanted to repair it).
Power steering fluid change. ( pulled about 1.5 litres out of the reservoir in total through draining, filling, mixing through running etc.)
Cleaned the injectors off the car including back flushing.
Painted centre engine cover.
Painted A and C pillars. (Satin black).
Experimenting with the ignition timing.
Probably forgotten a few things.
Everything works on it including the heated seat, headlamp washers and remote fob!!!
After a polish and wax last Saturday
I need to paint the wheel centres. I do have two brand new ones but the emblem is painted black, so i figured it would be better to prepare and paint the ones i have in silver.
Engine cover painted. (hammertite)
Festoon led bulbs in the front doors and main interior lights,, you can see the difference between the bulbs in the front door and rear door.
Sunroof aperture.
Seems a lot now i've written it down! But it's a good productive hobby

Just spotted this.
Not much else to report, did another transmission fluid change. Can't make up my mind on which one to use so went with Carlube again.
Cleaned the transmission solenoid gauze filters which were pretty much clean already, btw it shifts just fine, but i like to get it back to as new with all the fluid changes etc. (bit ocd)
Changed the rear door light bulbs to led festoons.
Fitted a new Volvo header tank, the original was fine, but wanted to preserve it.
Took the pads off all round to makes sure they were fine and not dragging/binding and replaced the rears.
Repaired the glove box hinge, the left one had broken and these appear to be different from the MK2's so i repaired it by drilling a small hole into the main plastic part and threading a cable tie onto the part that bolts to the metal support, holds just find.
Painted the centre caps as the paint was coming off as can be seen in the main photo, they look much better.
Programmed the IR blaster in my mobile so it can unlock the car
Went over the fuel filler neck with a coat of underseal , even though i did it with POR 15 before, thought i might as well do it again, it was solid before hand which is helped by the low mileage.
Put some universal mats over the original shag pile ones, to protect them.
I'm sure there's more..
Went on a 120mile round trip to a friends house and managed 30.9mpg, that included blasting full throttle up the hill by the air balloon pub on the A417 and being stuck in traffic, that's according to the trip computer.

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
The part i like is the last stretch after the pub going towards Swindon, the earlier stretch at the end of the dual carriageway is a bit iffy, too many slow moving vehicles in the inside lane.

Looking good Andy - what's happened to the air filter housing by the way?
