Crikey Jez, i thought they were extinct by now!

Certainly looks to be in very nice condition, the 8 valve "O" series is pretty much unburstable as well, just a bit underpowered in the 800 bodyshell. If the carb dashpot needs topping up, try using ATF instead of engine oil, you'll be surprised at the improvement! :D

Dave

Looks a really nice condition car on the outside and the engine still has the original paint still in tact. Lovely purchase and very green with envy.

Enjoy it and share with us the pics when you have chance.

Well, not had much time to get some good daytime shots but I have had a good look round the old girl. Seems like a pretty rust free body and it's certainly been someone's pride and joy in the past. (Not the vendor though as the car is grubby and unkempt) Expansion tank was Fubar but I have a few so, no problem. Sadly the head gasket is gone also so I'm going to need to source one of those plus a rocker cover gasket and inlet and exhaust gaskets as well but I'm not having much luck finding a supplier without knowing exactly which types I need.
I shall spend a few days tinkering over the coming weeks and keep you all posted, but I like it, the simplicity of it is quite refreshing.

Are you absolutely sure the HG is dead Jez? The M-series was prone to mayonnaise moreso even than the "O" series and definitely more than the T series.

A head gasket set should have all the gaskets you need if so and is probably cheaper than buying them individually.

MPi M series :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HEAD-GASKET-S ... SwH09ZIvnw

SPi M series :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HEADGASKET-SE ... 2325609079

However this one looks like it has the rocker cover gaskets as well :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-800-820 ... Swo8hToWd6

If all else fails, have a look at all of them listed on fleabay :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw ... t&_sacat=0

Hope that's some help to you one way or t'other! :D
Cheers,
Dave

Wow, thanks Dave, most helpful. Still don't know much about the engine so assumed all the injection options wouldn't work. Yes it's deffo the head gasket as on the front right edge a small puddle of oil appears on the head gasket overlap after a few minuites running. It looks like the hog has been replaced recently so in guessing either badly or no skim.

Dave, it's an O series engine, do the M series headgaskets fit.

Crikey Jez, that is a rare one! With the carburettor? :o
The M series almost certainly won't fit unless you fit an M series head to it which changes the car completely.

However a bit of digging found this :

https://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-LVQ701162EVA

It's NLA but the important bit is the HG set also fits the Montego range :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw ... t&_sacat=0

That's all of them including the 1275cc, 1600cc, 2000cc ("O Series) in carb, EFi and Turbo form) and this one looks like it should be the right one for you :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MONTEGO-2-0- ... SwLyBZzPEs

If you're right and the head has been off, worth investing in a set of head bolts, a skim and a tap to clear the bolt holes out as well. If memory serves correctly it's an oddball size of M11 x 1.5 but that was on a 91/K 420GSi, not sure if the earlier "O" series used metric head bolts or still had UNF or something. Worth double-checking once you have a head blot out.

Also check your radiator - i had a 2.0 EFi Montego that cooked the head because the rad was blocked. Dropped an M-series (with a clear rad) in it from my first 820Si, literally a spanner job apart from making one engine mount!
Cheers,
Dave

Here you go:

ALL the gasket bits you could possibly want:

http://www.jayar.co.uk/engine-parts/Eng ... Parts.aspx

Used Jayar to rebuild of the engine and drivetrain on the 827 Stirling for my friend. SO much stuff for our cars.
Randomly though, they dont list the ball joints for my Vitesse, but they're the same as all cars :)

Nice find Phil! :D Think i've narrowed it down a bit more :

http://www.jayar.co.uk/engine-parts/eng ... Parts.aspx

If that doesn't go straight to the HG set for the "O" series, here's what is on the page :

Brand: BGA Group
Part Number: HK3360
Head Gasket Set

820 2.0 (1986-1991) ,
Years Body Fuel CC Cyl Valve Cam Trans
05/88-09/90 Hatchback Petrol 1994 4 8 OHC FWD

£56.68
Inc VAT

It's lost the tabulation somewhat but it's for the 4 cylinder, 8 valve OHC which is the "O" series by any other name! :D
Cheers,
Dave
