Er, guys....

Fastback to the rescue!!!! I went to collect my refurbished rad this morning. Turned up and it was sitting exactly where I left it. The bloke said they are nla but he could make me one in brass?!? I said no thanks and have now ordered the one fastback found. Week wasted.
Does the bloke have no fingers? What's wrong with picking up the phone, dialling your number and telling you they were NLA 5 days ago?

It's a simple courtesy but people seem to forget that a simple phone call could save the victim (customer) precious time, stress, money and energy and protect their reputation - even if they couldn't fix it at least they let you know in good time to make alternative arrangements.

I'd call them congenital half-wits but that's way too generous by at least 7/16!

Dave

Yeah it is annoying as he quoted me £180 to either recore it or he would source me a new one. Then fastback provided a link for one for £150. I could have rung him and cancelled my refurb but I thought I would be a man of my word and stick to the agreement, plus I don’t mind paying £30 more to support a local independent. Anyway it hasn’t actually cost me any time as the car is apart so no drama really.

He doesn't know your car is apart and you could be stuck and unable to go to important places. I think you've dodged a bullet there though, if his work is as sloppy as his customer care then the other one is a better option! :D

Put the idler together again with new bearing. Plug welded rather than using rivets. Couldnt bolt it as the bolt head would have clashed with the pulley wheel holders.

Image

Cut the rad fan and intercooler off the old radiator frame.

Image

Then spent a fun afternoon with a watchmakers screw driver straightening the fins on the intercooler. Seriously boring job, but will improve airflow. After fin straightening I blew it through with an airline to get rid of most f the road grime, rotten fins, sparrow feathers etc etc.

Before

Image

After...yes really all that time for no perceivable difference!

Image

Tried the rad fan on a battery. Span real fast but sounded nasty. Took it apart and found the front bearing in the motor was really grinding.

Image

Lubed it up, and span it for ages. Got better but still nasty feel to it.

Image

Reassembled it for the moment and it is better, but have ordered a new bearing off ebay for £2 anyway.

All good stuff James - while that fan motor is apart would be a good time to give the commutator a polish with some emery tape - don't use sandpaper!
Just bring the copper segments back up to a bright finish again, obviously where that bearing has been tight it's got the comm a bit carbonised. You'll be surprised how much better it works with the comm polished up! :D

Dave

Yeah. I think it’s worth doing on this one. There is very little corrosion on the underside of engine bay or suspension components which is nice. Once it’s on the road I’ll give the interior some serious cleaning and it should be quite a decent motor. The. I’ll probably sell it on as I now have 5 Rovers!

After all that work i would think you'd be better off keeping it James, at least for a year!

At least that way you'd get some enjoyment out of your investment and some payback too. The values for 800s seem to have taken a hit this year, they were going up last year but seem to have dipped this year, next year will probably see them go back up again.
Cheers,
Dave

This is an awesome thread, a fantastic resource for me (and others) to work with. Sadly it makes me realise I much I should be doing to mine, but being my only daily driver and no drive/garage, it's difficult. Plus some of this is way beyond my comfort zone  :? .

Still, we all need a bit of inspiration from time to time.

To be honest if it’s maintained regularly the car shouldn’t need this much. It’s more a case that this was an occasional car for previous owner. It sat for a while and family man with other commitments mean he didn’t get the time to keep on top of things. I’m lucky that I can work on this in the evenings as no kids and my girlfriend lives away at moment.

Not sure mine has after being off the road for at least 3 years, if not more. It was already a second car by 2009 and I got it 2015 and put it on the road October last. I'm still trying to fix problems after getting it running, particularly fluid leaks, in and out!

Re: radiators.

I know the guy who's doing a bit of a rolling refurb on my old Vitesse has managed to get a Freelander radiator to fit. Because the issue is the side-mounted intercooler, it's impossible to find a proper Vitesse rad. The Freelander one can be made to fit with very few modifications - trimming a mount (on the rad, not the car), extend the overflow return pipe, cable ties to hold it next to the intercooler.

Readily available, and CHEAP.
Which model of Freelander? I assume Mk1, but any particular engine?
Sorry, missed this - 1999 L series diesel was what it came off

Back on the car again, making a mess of the car park. Spent 3 hours on it before I got hungry and went home.

My Helicoil kit arrived, so turbo off again and I removed the troublesome studs. Seriously glad that I did as this is what I found. Yes whole chunks of the original ally threads.

Image

Taped up the drill so that I didn't go too deep.

Image

I hate drilling, tapping and Helicoiling as its easy to screw it up. Hence I was concentrating so hard that I didn't actually take any photos. But anyway, turbo refitted and most importantly all 5 torqued up perfectly.

Image

Then I refitted the power steering pipes with new Dowty washers and a single o-ring for the low pressure one.

Image

Remounted the aircon compressor which was a pain due to access. Got there eventually.

Then I timed up the engine, fitted the cam belt and the engine covers. Some of the covers were missing their original black rover bolts, so the top cover I refitted using cap head bolts. Looks motorsport!

Image

Lastly I started mocking up the new exhaust. Yes I couldn't resist. The treasures that can be found trawling forums such as these. Genuine Mongoose Stainless Exhaust, with original Rover CAT. This is all proper 2.5". The original is 2", but where it is curved it reduces massively. The one that came off was just a cheapo pattern exhaust.

Look at the tailpipes on the new one!!! Me likey. Looking forward to cleaning it up and fitting. Should sound good too.
