827 Vitesse

Have a couple of bits left to finish on it, but it's coming along nicely.

Barn find (thanks Jez :D)

About 2 and half months so far since i took delivery, done in my spare time... Once i get started it's hard to stop me :P

I swapped the engine and rebuilt the gearbox on the hottest weekend so far, never sweated as much!! Sun cream makes me sweat loads

MOT'd on Thursday with no advisories!

In no particular order but the steering rack was changed when i had the engine out, seemed to make sense.

Replaced steering rack
New front lower coolant pipe
New radiator
Replaced expansion tank
Swapped out engine for a lower mileage engine 132k>125k
Replaced gearbox input shaft bearing (noisy with clutch pedal released)
Repaired (welded) and painted front sub frame
Replaced (new) top injector seals x 6
New fuel filter
Repaired offside wing indicator wiring
Repaired Speedo wiring
Painted numerous under body parts with POR15
Repaired and painted scuttle panel
New front wiper blades (22”)
Replacement tyres x 4
Replacement 15” Vitesse wheels x 4
Replaced rear brake calipers
New headlining
Cleaned and POR15’d the sunroof aperture after removing the sunroof assembly
POR15’d the sills, then gravitex then 2 coats of silver Hammerite
Gravitex’d inside of the arches
Dropped the fuel tank, removed and substituted the fuel return metal pipe with rubber hose as the old one had corroded and was leaking petrol
Painted fuel tank with 2 coats of black Hammerite
Painted fuel filler neck with 3 coats of POR15
New seals for the front brake calipers after cleaning up the calipers and pistons
Welded holes in front exhaust pipe (underside mainly)
Replaced alternator
New alternator belt
New power steering belt
New timing belt
New timing belt tensioner
New oil filter after running a litre of ATF for approx. 30mins
New oil (5w30)
New MTF94 oil for the gearbox
New blue coolant
Adjusted clutch master cylinder pushrod
Replaced OSR fog bulb
Bought radio code for original stereo (5100)
New front brake pads
Replaced gear selector and stay rod due to not being able to remove the original one from the gearbox, due to stuck spring stud, had to cut off with an angle grinder, but I’ve replaced the spring stud with an M8 bolt, which tightens up the gear change
Adjusted tracking using string method
Painted wheel centre caps (badly!)
Replaced fuel pump
Cleaned steering wheel with sandpaper etc (very dirty)
New after market remote central locking kit
Replaced ignition lock (original worn out and you could remove the key with the engine running!)
Replaced brake master cylinder
Brake fluid flush x 3, bleed and gravity bleed
Replaced a couple of vacuum hoses (nibbled by mice at a guess)
Replaced coolant hoses
Dynax S50 in the sills and box sections
Replaced nearside front outer door handle

Probably a few things that I've forgotten as well!!

Wow! Total rebuild. Really impressive and surely those mk1 manuals must be very rare?

Great to read this thread on this particular 827; in this colour it was like a signature car in the advertisements for ARG Group.
Been quite busy already by the photos :D really well done, keep at it.

Cheers guys. :D :D

Got a few more bits to do, need to change the clutch and maybe flywheel as it judders badly when releasing the clutch, (you can drive round it with revs, but not ideal) I have a spare flywheel and bought a new compete clutch kit recently for £40, so will probably do it this or next weekend, i never tested the clutch as the engine was from the Rovor SLi end, the engine ran ok and the box worked ok as it was from this Vitesse, but had no way of testing them both together until it was in the car, the clutch was new a few years back when Yasu had it so had no reason to doubt it wouldn't be ok and useable as it hardly did any miles and the Rovor's front end clutch is just fine.

Not the first time i've had to pull a box off after already installing the engine with box. should take around 2-3 hours to remove, then an hour to sort then 2-3 to re-install. I'm going to re-use the fluids this time as they've had very little use, around 130 miles.

Similar thing happened to the Rovor front end engine, i had fitted a new belt and tensioner when the engine was out, the pump looked and felt fine but i needed to change it recently after not many miles due it starting to leak coolant out of the weep hole, not a bad job with the engine still fitted, but would have been even easier when i had the engine out previously..

Might be worth doing the rear crank oil seal while the flywheel is off Andy. As for reusing the gearbox oil, i think i'd drain it into a container and look at it first! :D
Cheers,
Dave

I've replaced the input shaft bearing, so have had the gearbox apart so i doubt i'll find any nasties in the oil :P

It's going into a bucket so i'll look at it out of curiosity more than anything.
I might replace the crank seal depending on whether it looks like it's leaking :)

Didn't get a chance to do it last weekend due to having to work :/

Hmmm, mixed feelings about the oil Andy! I think i'd change it regardless as you fitted some new parts in there. There's logic in my lunacy but i've got some sort of summer cold and my head feels like cotton wool at the moment so can't really explain it.

For the cost of a few litres of 10W40 semi-synth, it would be silly not to! Or does yours use the manual Unipart Transmatic?
Cheers,
Dave

I've put MTF94 in it. I drained the gearbox then opened it up and cleaned it thoroughly then fitted the new input shaft bearing then fitted it to the engine which has only had very little use ~200 miles. So the oil should be fine when I drain it again to do the clutch. :)

You wouldn't change the oil after 200 miles so I don't see the need to replace it after changing the clutch. :) Unless its normal to after changing parts?

Cheers nitro :D

I've bought some new old stock front turbo shocks to potentially go on it along with the rear new Konis that I have.

Still got a cotton wool head but if you rebuild an engine, after 5-600 miles, you change the oil as the parts bed in, dirt comes off the various parts and so on. I know it was only the input shaft bearing but hope you can see how i was thinking.
Cheers,
Dave

I can see where you're coming from Dave, but i'd be worried if a ball bearing "bearing" needed bedding in :P

I'll strain the oil but i added Archoil AR9100 to it so don't want to waste that :D

Hope you feel better soon Dave.
