Rover didn't change the door cards Henrik - Sterling did! In the USA, Rover didn't exist after 1986 so all the Mk1s sold there were Sterling 825 or 827 models. The flagship of the range was the 827 SLi which in effect was the equivalent of our Sterling model but they also did a Sterling 827 Oxford Edition that had extra wood and differently shaped trim, different coloured parts of other trim and so on.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterling_(marque)

https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2017/ ... y-england/

You might also find if you lift the door handle escutcheon you can slide the wood under without need for amputation.

I can't remember what the stateside equivalent of the Vitesse was but could probably find out with a few hours research. :D

In other news, i've diagnosed my alterntor problem and will update you via PM later, suffice to say poor workmanship at the build stage resulted in a catastrophic failure! TARFU now, never mind FUBAR!
Cheers,
Dave

Looking at interior pics they look the same so it’s a bit of a mystery. But I can’t find any pics of interior from a 1990 Sterling or later so maybe that was a year they changed?

Can’t open your second link though. Can’t get rid of the ”cookie warning”.

Oh and no, there is a recession in the door card where my Wood sits now and I have to keep that as it is. Look below.

Good work on the alternator fault finding! Remove it a couple of times for practice first and you’ll be able to do it in 5 min. I ripped mine out 2-3times when I had trouble with it and in the end I could do it while the coffee was being brewed. Same now with the hidden relay board behind the fusebox and clutchpedal. I can remove it in a couple of minutes! :)

This is the most relevant pic from the second link :

Image

Are you using Avast or Norton Anti-Virus by any chance? I don't get any cookie warnings when i open it.

Looking at the pic though, the wood is slightly longer and the door card is slightly different. I believe it was mid-late 1991 when Rover pulled the plug on ARCoNA (Austin Rover Cars of North America) as sales had dropped off dramatically. The irony of this is the Coupe was developed for the USA market and they never got it!

The way i see it you have two choices with your wood trim. Either contact the seller and find out if the front door cards are available (likely to be £OUCH! on S&H though!) or remove your existing wood trims, use a heat gun to soften the glue on the aluminium and gently prise the wood off. Now use the aluminium backing as a template to cut the "new" wood and then cut the new piece to suit, chamfering the edges to match and then lacquering it.

Alternatively, use a heat gun, paint stripper or similar to remove the old lacquer from your existing wood and then relacquer. It's possible (i haven't tried so i don't know) that using the heat gun will revive the existing lacquer driving the milkiness out of it so it looks new again.

I've rebuilt the original alternator which had a suspected intermittent rectifier fault, however it still worked most of the time! Fingers crossed!
Cheers,
Dave

A yes those are the ones!

No I just use my iPhone so thats Probably the reason.

The wood, I’ll just cut them with my razor saw and polish of the edge. I think it’s going to be ok. A future plan is to sand down a wood strip to remove the laquer and give it a shot.

The mk2 wood is very different from the mk1, this is wood straight through. The mk2 is multiple layers of veneer plus a thick layer of plastic like laquer. The Mk1 strips seems more genuine with a thinner layer of laquer on top of the solid wood. I have extra strips from the other doors but they are really bad.

I’ve solved the disturbing headlight dilemma once and for all. I got a very cheap aftermarket loom for extra full beam lights and hooked it up, after removing the original H4 plug. The signal was taken from behind the stereo so the lights come on automatically when ignition is on. So no we can use the car as we have to put low beam on by law.

Once I get the ”new” relay I’ll change them and see if that solves it. If not I’ll need a new stalk.

Next problem is to solve the windows not working. I really don’t understand that one and I suspect a previous owner has done some changes to the electricsl system.

Yes it’s ok. It’s pretty difficult to blend the new paint to the old and this is only the front end plus a few inches of the bonnet painted so it takes some rubbing. Not rocket science but some effort is needed.

I cut and fitted the new wood too. They are a tad darker but the pics lie some, it’s actually not that big difference.

Thanks Dave! Yes and the performance and ride quality is excellent. I did a calculation of the fuel consumption and the trip computer said 9.30l/100km when I refueled but it came back at 8.83l/100km which is even better! And that includes some stick!

That's seriously good economy Henrik! Can't work ut the conversion at the moment (brain on a go-slow!) but must be close to 40mpg so definitely good going! :D

I used an online calculator and it gave 31.99mpg. I know it really drops if going on a stretch in a steady 55-60mph. That would give some 40mpg in return.

I just worked it out on a calculator at 31.4mpg using my normal method which is pretty close, either way 31-32mpg is pretty good.

Best economy i've had was 43mpg on a long fast run, keeping the speed at 80-90mph on the fast road but with a few miles each end of normal slow driving.
The previous day i'd done the same run in similar traffic and weather conditions but kept the speed a bit lower (70-80) and only returned 40mpg - usually if i keep the speed lower i get about 33-35mpg on anything where i can maintain a steady speed.

There is a reason why the faster run gave better economy - that road speed equates to an engine speed where the second set of inlet butterflies close to make the inlet tracts shorter so improving the efficiency by pulse tuning. At 55-60mph the first set have just closed so there is some improvement.
Cheers,
Dave
