It's a perennial advisory on our MOTs, 'Corrosion on brake pipe'. A slight rub down with wire wool and a coat of paint does the trick. Never had one leak though.

You'd think these days, in fact even when the 800 were first made they would have come up with a non-corroding brake pipe really!

Could use stainless steel but I guess the bean counters get involved. If it lasts more than ten years, what's the problem?
The answer; someone else's!

The garage didn't refit the rubber grommet/boot before making up the flare and union which was annoying, but I managed to get a rubber grommet in place once it was back home, so it does at least keep the road mess out.
More important than road muck, it stops the pipe chafing on the bodywork

Well, got to track down a new auxiliary belt tensioner for the Vitesse.

Started it up this morning and heard such a racket I thought I'd dropped a piston. Very loud, rhythmic banging. Not cool.

Anyway, opened the bonnet and saw the tensioner banging back and forth exactly in time with the noise, so whatever it is that provides the damping/pressure pressures no more.

Is this the animal Adrian?

Can't think what they look like although i have a T series timing belt tensioner on my lathe but that's not the bit you need!

It looks like one of these (which also has the correct part number, but I don't trust it!)

How do you mean, you don't trust it? I have an idea but curious to know if firstly we're thinking on the same lines and secondly if there's something else i'm not aware of.

I haven't been able to find indication anywhere else that the tensioner that fits a diesel Civic is the same as the T16 turbo in an 800. I think that ebay link is the only page anywhere in the world that puts that part number with that application.

On Rimmer's website, it seems like the diesel and petrol variants of the 200/400/ZS use different tensioners, with the petrol one being the T series version that I need, and the other being....other.

That's more or less what i thought Adrian - the Honda diesels are usually Izusu so doubtful it would fit.

I think someone was looking at the wrong section of the catalogue when they put in the compatibilitiy vehicles so it sounds like the search continues!

Dave

£OUCH!!!!

On the bright side, they don't wear out/fail all that often so hopefully once replaced it'll be good for another 24 years which is about 67p/year. Not quite so bad if you think of it that way. :D

Think you might have to move a decimal point, Dave...

£160/24 = £6.67 a year ;)

Spot-on Adrian! That'll teach me not to do mental arithmetic until i'm awake!

I was thinking 16/24 = 2/3, 2/3 of one £ is 67p, i forgot it would be 2/3 of a tenner! That of course is as you rightly say, £6.67/year.
Cheers,
Dave
