Clutch feels fantastic now - so pleased with that result, I went and got the aircon regassed.

Result is that now makes a fairly unpleasant grinding noise from the compressor. The place that did the regas (for £35) have said they'll recover the gas, fit a new compressor, and refill for £40 so providing I can find one I trust, I've said go for it.

There's a couple on ebay, so I've just fired off a few questions - hope to hear back soon
By a new clutch bearing for the compressor and fit that instead! https://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p7000 ... _info.html

Should be the correct one for you but it would help to know which sort of compressor you have.
Cheers,
Dave

I like the idea, but to be honest, the war I had changing the bearing on my last Vitesse alternator, and the ease of handing someone £40 to bung a (secondhand) one in, suggests I might take the easy option.

The part no is JPB100690, which also correlates to a Volvo. There's a couple of used Rover ones on ebay, and a few Volvo. If I can be sure of getting the right bits, I could refurb the secondhand one, but I'll want to just hand over a unit for fitting. Reconditioning the one currently on the car isn't a cost effective option.

Are you sure that's the right part number Adrian? Searching Rimmers for it brings up "Do you mean JPB100680?" Update on this, i just looked a different way on RImmers, 690 is NLA, hence not bringing up any results!

That fits many other 2.0 models (2/4/600 series) but the slightly different part number might relate to different brakcets. The 827 also uses the same compressor but has different brackets and hence a different part number for the complete assembly.

However, if you can find the manufacturers part number (think most are Nippon-Denso) you should be able to widen your search even further.

That said, they are all likely to suffer the same problem - the stator clutch bearings for the compressor clutch are likely to have Brinelled and the "new" one is no better than what's on there and still needs the clutch bearing renewed. There are tool kits available to remove the compressor drive pulley and stator clutch assembly including the bearing and then you fit a new bearing, refit the stator and pulley, job done. I need to do mine but i've needed to do it for several years now!

If i forget and use the A/C, i get a noisy reminder!
Cheers,
Dave

When it was regassed, the mechanic called me over to show me the smoking coming from the compressor/pulley area. He had a bit of a panic on his face!

I said give it a few minutes, it hasn't turned for over 3 years - and sure enough the smoke went away, but the noise hasn't.

That all sounds about par for the course, the good thing is the compressor is still ok, as i said earlier in different words, my worry would be that a secondhand compressor will also have Brinelled bearings from inactivity.
Had a wheel bearing on my Coupe go because of lack of use at one point.

Dave

How about this eh?

Denso 6CA 447200

Apparently shared with a 911!

There should be 4-digits more Adrian - e.g. 6CA 447200-wxyz - it's the last 4 digits that make the difference.

The same compressor (in basic form 6CA 447200) is fitted to Toyota buses, John Deere tractors and countless others, if it's shared with a 911 you can guarantee it'll be expensive! The fuel pressure regulator on my Volvo is shared with the 911, only ones available in the UK were up to £500 - got one from Rock Auto in the USA for £15 + S&H which was about another £6 but as they didn't get the 820 stateside or anything else (to my knowledge) that uses the T series engine, that's probably no help at all.
Cheers,
Dave

And weirdly, its actually 447300 on a different picture (presumably the clutch) with 4 digits 0370

Interesting you say that, looking at the clutch picture :

Image

147300-0370 is what i read on the clutch Adrian. If you enlarge this picture, you can make out that there were other numbers stamped in after the 447200-, it looks from what i can see to be 26?? but the label is so damaged and squashed/worn that it's impossible to tell.

Image

What is the number on your own compressor? Also have a look at page 923 of onwards in this :

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8v8oi ... sp=sharing

If that works, it should take you to "HondaLegend.pdf" in https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... 2NRMVdyaFk

It gives the procedure for stripping down and renewing the compressor clutch/pulley bearings, i can't remember where on the T series the compressor is mounted but i would still think that's easier and cheaper than having it evacuated, changing the compressor (for another that may already have Brinelled bearings) then vacuuming it down again, adding oil, leak detector fluid and finally regassing it.
Admittedly that's orientated towards the 827 but it's virtually the same compressor (mountings aside) so 99% of it should cross over. Without the "Special Tool" to hold the pulley to undo the centre nut, i'd suggest running a temporary +12V feed to the compressor clutch winding to lock the pulley against the compressor while you undo the central bolt, it's only done up to 9lb.ft so shouldn't present any problems.
Cheers,
Dave

Dave - I can barely even see my compressor! It's hidden underneath the alternator, water pump and PS pump, with a cross member underneath, the turbo to one side and the inner chassis rail to the other.

The garage want £40 to fit the new compressor, no additional charge for vacuum and refill - for that, I'd probably grab the compressor on ebay, give it a once over and replace any bearings if they seem worn, and then ask them to fit it.

Thanks for the help though, always appreciated.

Thanks for the reminder of where it is, similar position on the 827 but without the extra stuff to remove to get at it.. I kind of agree, check the replacement over, order and fit a new bearing - i was going to say "if it needs it" but i think i'd err on the side of caution and do it anyway then hand it over to the garage bods to do the rest. I can see the logic in that approach!
The serpentine drive belt is enough to put me off! :P  :D

How much of a pain is it to whip the clutch pedal out? I have my modified rod to fit now but may take out the pedal to resolve as it has done 160000 miles.

If I'm honest, it's hard to say. I did it with the dash out which made refitting significantly easier.

There's plenty of space to undo the through bolt and the nut - but before you pull it through completely, I'd double check that you can get a spanner up to hold the nut in place (i think 15mm from memory) for when you come to put it back.

Basically, it's super simple - but you have to be prepared for some frustrating access, so experiment with the most comfortable way to reach it. At the very least, you'll be removing the driver's seat unless you're ultra flexible.

Love the bush in the clutch pedal. Both my manuals are squeaking. And where did you AC for £35.00! That is bargaintastic. I have bough the STP stuff from halfords before. Just bought some UV Glasses so I can leak check the Vitesse. Dont know how bad that will be, considering the state of the bodywork. Pump sounds good though, tested that with a direct supply.

The luck of living in the North West! Piston and Rotor garage in Bury did the aircon. £35 regas isn't that hard to track down round these parts, but a garage prepared to do annoying jobs like fit a compressor on a £40 labour rate is worth its weight in gold!
