I took the part number from Rimmers and searched with google. Landrover are a good source of parts - the T series was used in the Discovery

https://www.bestpartstore.co.uk/pqg10008-oen

But according to the guys on MG-Rover.org, the LR Defender TDI one fits - under 20 quid for the whole tensioner and pulley

That's fantastic, thank you Richard.

I actually saw that thread (doing a similar exercise to you), but I totally misread it - I thought they were talking purely about the pulley wheel, not the actual tensioner itself.

Cracking find, thank you

Unless i've misread something there Adrian, one of those tensioners is about 1/10 the price of Rimmers? Definitely a good find by Richard! :D

So, that tensioner, ERR6951 (https://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/err69 ... ery-2.html) fits the 800 T16 Vitesse with aircon? It's worth just getting one in, methinks.

And for those that are old enough, I wonder if he's still with Fanny (I bet he's not heard that one before).

That must be the first ever site reference to Johnny and Fanny Craddock

It makes sense that the tensioner fits: The TDi is just a 5 cylinder L series diesel and the L series is just a diesel version of the T series.

As we have the same model, please do.

I'm guessing the Lux variant is quite a bit rarer than the 'standard' as a lot of people seem to prefer the Recaro seats.

Yes - me included :d

But you're right, it is quite a bit rarer. If I could get a standard grey Vitesse interior (including an early airbag-less dash), I'd jump at it and happily let the cream leather and purple carpets go to a loving home.

Must admit, I don't prefer the Recaro interior. The main reason being (as with most modern cars) is the ubiquitous use of black. Black, everywhere, on everything, including the roof liner? Just no. I'm guessing you're not a big fan of black either.

I was wondering if it is possible to lightly pad the bolster and wings to give a slightly 'grippier' seat. Think I saw it done for Drew Pritchard in one of his cars. That would be subtle, look OEM and still have the more up-market, less boy racer, look.

Black headlinings are horrible, i changed the black one on my Volvo for a lighter one (still dark grey, what Volvo call "Mid Grey" :? ) which is better but not as good as the "Cool Grey" of the normal 800s.

As for padding the seat cushion, using a sheet of 3/8-1/2" domestic carpet underlay underneath the OE foam pad gives a nice boost to the OE foam and "fills the gaps" to give a newer appearance. Not sure if it would work on the Racaros, not sure if they have separate pads for the bolesters and main cushions but if not, underlay between the OE foam and the wire/spring network under the foam works well.

Doesn't sound much but makes a huge difference!

Image

You can see the sheet of underlay in that pic, it's that foam particle stuff, all compressed/bonded together to be ~1/2" thick. As always, a bit of experimentation could work wonders for you! :D
Cheers,
Dave

Well, the verdict is in - and it's infuriating.

It doesn't fit, but because of one tiny factor (photo to follow)

Basically, the units are identical, except for the placement of the locating peg. The red dot shows (approx) where it is on the T-series.

Because it's slightly higher on the Land Rover version, the tensioner is slightly rotated and the pulley fouls on the air-con pump pulley.

So it's a nigh-on £140 difference because of that tiny dot.

Could you get round it with a longer (or shorter) belt Adrian? Or is it possible to relocate the hole for the locating pin?

Ughh! So close.

I'm guessing it is niether possible nor desirable to either remove and manufacture a new lug (alloy housing?) nor replace the rear element?
