MK1 Sterling

Post by austinpowers » Tue May 05, 2020 9:08 pm

Hi all, it's been a while!!

Bought myself a new (to me) H reg 827 Sterling in fetching light blue :D

A little project but doesn't need a great deal doing to it but it'll be good to get back into "playing".

Dave. Is this ok to put into it.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202966082788

A little cheaper than Carlube atf-u and so say the correct spec.

I'll pay the extra for Carlube if not :)

I'll put some pics up soon.

Welcome back Andy - was wondering wher you'd been!

As for that Fanfaro ATF....................... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!

Don't know is the honest answer and after a recent experience with the Volvo and some engine oil that came from Germany that disappeared faster than Paul Daniels i'd be very reluctant to try any "new" brands from Germany or anywhere else that hadn't already been tried.

Someone on another forum had similar trouble with another engine oil, can't think which one it was now but i seem to recall (although might be wrong) that was a "new" oil from somewhere other than normal. Either that or a very well known make and just not suited to his engine.

I know those are engine oils but it's made me very dubious about trying anything unknown. The Carlube ATF-U might be a bit dearer but at least it's a known quantity.

It seems to have changed packaging as well, the new packaging doesn't specify Z-1 but the old packaging does :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Carlube-Atf- ... 4157516236

Alternatively, there's this from the USA but more expensive than Carlube :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Transmission ... 2980244512

Couldn't find any on ebay UK but there might be some now.

Looking forward to the pics of your new wee beastie! :D
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks Dave.

I went with the Carlube but the one that arrived was the newer bottle, on the website it doesn't list Honda Z-1, but on the container it does....

Photos as requested, more to come, I've already taken the radiator out because it was rotten lower down, hence the missing grill. I have a new auto radiator to go in but one of the cooler pipes wouldn't play ball so I have a new one coming from Rimmerbros.

Nice looking wee beastie Andy - looks familiar, seem to remember seeing it a few times at the BMC/BL Rally at Peterborough.

Your radiator is similar to how mine was a few years back, i fitted a manual rad (less than half the price) and a separate ATF cooler.

Image

The added bonus is if the heat exchanger in the end tanks ever fails, with a separate ATF cooler on a manual rad, it can't let coolant into the gearbox.
Cheers,
Dave

I had a spare new auto radiator so figured it better to fit that, but always wondered about fitting a separate cooler for the auto.

When did you last see it at a show?

I'm impressed with the separate cooler Andy, it's the same one Honda used on the original Legends before using the integrated ATF cooler in the rad end caps. By the way, you'll probably find it's an SD1 metal pipe, i'm certain the oil-water heat exchangers are SD1 items fitted in the 800 end caps.

It's a couple of years since i last went to the BL Rally as it stopped but think it was 2018, saw it coming in and a few years before had seen it on another section of the show. I might be wrong but the reg number seems familiar.
Cheers,
Dave

I remember seeing it at Brads when he had it for sale, wasn't too taken with the blue leather but being a manual Sterling was very appealing :D

It's still going no?

Is it the Atlantic Blue interior? Does it also have the adjustable rear seats? Seem to recall there was a "special" model with those features but think it was slightly older than an "H" so might have been on trade plates as a demonstrator for the first year or so of its life?

Dave

Got myself a "little" toy to help with working on my cars :D

Image

Image

I bought some new front caliper pistons, the old ones were corroded so were sticking.
The side by side comparison shows the difference.

Image

Whilst up in the air i noticed that the nearside lower ball joint was greasy and upon inspection the boot was split, so i replaced it with a new ball joint.

Image

Image

Got a bit carried away what with the car being up in the air and painted not only the lower sills but the underside :)
