Number 58!

Post by CHR15E » Mon Aug 02, 2021 11:56 pm

Hello all, it's been a while again.

Hope you're all surviving?

So as the title suggests, completely out of the blue I've bought another 800.

Hard to believe its been 9 years since I sold up.

I honestly had no plans to buy another, of late I've been breaking Astra Twintops as I own one myself. This means I spend a fair amount of time on Facebook Marketplace, where I happened to spot a Mk2 827i saloon in Nightfire red with a manual box at a cheap price.

Curiosity suddenly got the better of me and before I knew it I'd travelled over for a look at it.

It's no show winner but has a decent history and generally isn't a bad car.

It does several niggles and some bits of it look to have been painted in the past.

I honestly haven't decided what I'll do with it yet. I may keep it, if I do though it needs lowering. It rolls so much.

Here's a few pics of it.

Welcome back Chris! Wouldn't mind betting it has the puny 19mm front anti roll bar and similarly small rear ARB if it rolls a lot. Surprising how much difference they make, lowered or not.

Looks an interesting car though, unusual to have a base model with the manual box, wonder why it was specced that way?
Cheers,
Dave

I hadn't thought about the roll bars. Doubt any Vitesse Sport ones are around now?

In my experience the 827i was the most common for being a manual. I had at least two I can remember back in the day. One of which that was near identical to this.

If I am going to keep it I'll look at sorting the suspension for certain.

I was originally thinking of just sorting some of the niggles and selling it on. Values are still not amazing at the lower end it seems?

I might have a 23mm (26mm?) front ARB from my Coupe floating around and maybe a rear one, 19mm (Vit) or maybe 21mm (Vit Sport) but i'd have to check.

I know of an 827SLi that was sold recently for £550 with no MoT and in need of new sills and general welding in that area.

I've noticed that as well about the manual boxes being fitted to base spec models, why i don't know. If they've stretched to afford a base spec 827, why bother with the no-cost option of a manual box when the auto is quicker?

Values are still all over the place like a mad womans breakfast sadly and what sells for strong money one week will struggle to reach a bare minimum the next week. That said many people are now returning to outright ownership of an older car rather than paying PCP every month for something they'll never own.
Cheers,
Dave

I'm potentially interested if you do have any bars, cost depending. This is going to be a 4th car if I keep it so I'm not looking to chuck loads at it.

My dad always preferred the autos, this being a manual was the only thing that made me think twice. I think the engine feels more alive with a manual box and it suits my driving style better. I am finding going back to a 5 speed strange though.

Well I probably shouldn't say what I paid for this if I do sell it on but I will. It was up for £600 but I gave £350 for it. The young lad that had it was paying £120 a month to insure it.

He wasn't impressed when I said it was going to cost me £184 for the year. Joys of getting older I guess?

There's good news and bad news on the ARBs Chris, the good news is i have a 26mm front ARB (Vit Sport spec) and it's still attached to a subframe so will come with the bushes (condition not known but Rimmers still stock them AFAIK) and D brackets if needed. Not sure about the bolts, they may be corroded in so might have to drill them out.

The thinner bar i thought was a 23mm front ARB from my Coupe turns out to be a 21mm version and the other bar (rear one) i can't quite see, i know it's buried in my small storage shed if i still have it but given the front was only 21mm it's probably only a 17mm. If you wanted to get brackets to fit it tandem style to your existing rear ARB then that one would be cheap.

Drop me a PM if you're genuinely interested in the front 26mm bar.

Either way the manual is rare, especially a factory manual. Insurance for youngsters is criminally high, my Sterling renewed at about £160 a couple of months back, don't remember the exact figure so i'm paying leass than 1.5 months worth of what that young lad pays per month for the whole year! The Volvo has just come down, that's near £170 for the year but both cars for the year cost me less than what he pays for 3 months!

Being an old gimmer does have some benefits after all! :P
Cheers,
Dave

I wasn’t expecting that Chris!

I guess you don’t have any spares left, just think, if you knew what you know now you might have kept some!

Good to hear from you.

Dave - I'll give it some thought once I've actually used the car a bit and made the decision I'm keeping it. My wife says I'm just lying to myself claiming I'm going to sell it.

Simon - You and me both. Impulse purchase as it was cheap mainly.

No parts left whatsoever. TBH I'm not looking to spend big money on the car. I may just tidy it up a bit and use it/sell it as is.

It's not a bad car but at the same time it's not a minter either.

Cracking news, Chris. It'll be a nice chance to get your brain whirring again, back on such familiar territory.

Something like that. 😁

I've had the all the wheels off and checked the brakes over. Didn't even have to think which tools and what size anything was.

Thanks. 👍

I am still in two minds what to do with it though I'll be honest.

I don't need a 4th car on the road but part of me thinks I may not get another chance down the line.

I'm not looking to create a show car so I'm unlikely to look for a better car later on.

This one just needs the floaty front end sorting and possibly a front pipe I think.

Let us know how you get on with the floaty front end - I've never been totally satisfied with mine, despite new lowering-ish springs, ARB links, etc.

If it's a floaty/light feeling on the front end and the car tends to wander at speed then chances are it's the front dampers. I remember when the front ones went weak on my Sterling it would happily change lanes on a dual carriageway without any steering input - sometimes it tried changin to a lane that didn't exist which could be a bit scary at errrrrrrrrr........mph! :P   :D

I would say it's possible that all of it needs replacing.

I was looking at ball joint prices earlier as may swap the upper, lower and track rod ends on it. Any recommendations on suppliers before I order them off ebay?

I was originally thinking of lowering it but the uprated ARB may be the way to go.

I don't need it to be a race car but would like it to handle better.
