I would say it's possible that all of it needs replacing.

I was looking at ball joint prices earlier as may swap the upper, lower and track rod ends on it. Any recommendations on suppliers before I order them off ebay?

I was originally thinking of lowering it but the uprated ARB may be the way to go.

I don't need it to be a race car but would like it to handle better.
More brand recommendation than suppliers Chris in the following order :

1. Blueprint

2. First Line (New old stock, try to avoid the Borg&Beck/Firstline, i don't think the quality is as good as when First Line were separate, still pretty good though)

3. Any reputable brand - also there's a Japanese brand, can't remember it but would know it if i saw it that's reputedly very good too.

Whichever brand you get, peel the dust boot back/remove it and make sure there's enough grease but preferably add some to make sure. I've found a lot of ball joints, T/R/Es etc coming through these days with little or no grease in them, obviously cost cutting somewhere! :o  :o

Dave

I bet the neighbours had to check the date to make sure they hadn't been sent back in time.

Most have moved on mate so a lot will probably think someone's just dumped an old car on the street. 🙄🤣

Honestly at the minute I'm beginning to question my purchase of it. Maybe when I've sorted some of the niggles I'll feel differently.

It is surprising how many people are interested in it though. So I may hand on to it purely to entertain at local shows etc.

We'll see. I'm up to my neck in Astra Twintops at the minute. Not at 800 levels yet but I've just bought the 9th and 10th ones I've had. Though these are almost all for breaking. The parts are doing well at the minute.

Your neighbours will be even more cofused once you've sorted the niggles and are using it Chris!

As for being up to your neck in Astras, that sounds painful! Especially if it's feet first!

I think maybe the pictures flatter it a bit, though it's not a wreck. It needs lots of TLC yet.

I'm sure they would. I do use it here and there but would really like to swap all the ball joints before going any further with it.

That pain is the least of my worries with how unimpressed my wife is now I seem to have relapsed into excessive car buying. 🤣🤣

Since the end of last November I've bought 9 Twintops and the 800!

Though I've currently only got 4 Twintops. 2 of which will go soon once I've finished with them.

I'll put another thread up on them if anyone's bothered.

A few jobs in and I'm already missing my spares. 😭

Partly because of old fixings and partly it allowed me to prep things before doing jobs.

I'm now having to do what I can whilst keeping the car in one piece due to other cars and access I can't leave it stood immobile.

Anyway, so far;

I've had the upper arms off, cleaned them back and painted them. A long with new ball joints.

New droplinks, thanks to Gordon. 👍

New buttons for the fob off ebay. Very nice fit and look good.

I picked up a set of Koni shocks and springs from the Facebook group.

They're all on now but I've had several problems a long the way.
The passenger driveshaft has no retaining clip inside the outer CV. I assume it never has while I've had it. Got some on order.

While I was stripping the leg off I've swapped the lower joint and track rod end. Drivers side still to do.

The rear drivers brake hose to shock and upper caliper to carrier bolts were both rounded off.

The shock bolt I just cut with swapping the shock anyway.

The caliper I removed with the carrier bolts. I'll cut the head off later and see what I can do with it. I may need a slider pin for it.

The last pics are so far. I've left the trains off as I'm waiting till I've done for a bit.

I'm also cleaning, tidying and painting/rust proofing as I go.

Great work there Chris - if i'd know you were stripping the upper wishbones down i would have pointed you to this sooner : http://rover800.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=14802

It's a cheap and easy fix, vast improvement in ride quality as well and is along the lines of what Honda did on their upper wishbones for the early Legends - this makes use of the OE metalwork so still looks factory after.

Hope you checked and/or added some grease to the new lower ball joints, seen several come through dry/nearly dry in recent times, not just on the 800 either!
Cheers,
Dave

I'll look into the upper arm bushes once I've got it all back together.

I wasn't looking to do all of it in one go as I was trying to isolate the noise I can hear but things escalated. 🙄😂

So, more fun and games. 🙄

I ordered new snap rings from Rimmers which arrived very quickly.

Unfortunately they're wrong. 🙄 The ID of the ring is exactly the same as the OD of the shaft, so there's little hope of it staying put and doing its job.

After speaking to them, aside returning them they couldn't offer any more help.

I've since found a dedicated supplier and have ordered some from them. Fingers crossed for a better result.

Pic for reference.

I had similar on mine when i changed the CV joints Chris, i slid the new CV joint onto the shaft, got the ring to the groove and pushed the joint hard up against it. Then used a small flat-bladed screwdriver to coax the snap ring into the groove while maintaining pressure on the CV against the ring. Eventually the ring was far enough into the groove to let the CV start to slide over it at which point i gave the joint a tap with a rubber hammer, it slid further on with a definite click from the ring and wouldn't come off.

They were aftermarket rings supplied with the new joints so i suspect the others you've ordered won't be any different.
Cheers,
Dave

These were definitely too large. They slid over the splines of the shaft so no way they'd lock into the groove to retain the joint.

The replacements turned up today, not bad to say I only ordered them at 16.45 yesterday!

They were a much better fit diameter wise but wouldn't compress enough so I trimmed the gap a little and eventually got the joint to slide over. Seems ok now.

This was the first time I've driven it since fitting the Koni shocks and springs and I can safely say it's ruined it! Not so much being crashy but it's now just too stiff.

I'm also noticing the steering seems very slow at low speed. This was before the shock swap. So not related. Is this me noticing the Honda rack for the first time or is something actually wrong? There's no play that I can feel. One track rod end is new so far.

Maybe I'm expecting too much but I'm really beginning to feel that owning an 800 again is a mistake for me at the minute.

How do you mean the steering seems slow Chris? :?

What condition is the fluid in? Might be worth investing in a 200ml syringe and some Carlube ATF-U or NAPA MV ATF, suck the reservoir dry with the syringe, i usually discharge it into an empty Pot Noodle pot (it's white so shows up the real colour and contamination) then top up with fresh fluid, start up and go lock to lock a few times to bleed it then top up if necessary.

Drive it around for 2-300 miles then repeat, usually needs 3-4 of these to get the fluid to stay clean but improves the steering a lot.

Could be other reasons for "slow" sttering, depending what you mean by slow.
Cheers,
Dave

I've given this a lot of thought and I think it's actually that the steering is over assisted.

So when I said slow, I think that it's how it's making it appear in my head.

I remember people complaining about this year's ago but never noticed it when I was driving them all the time.
