Forgot about that before.

How bad did it look before stripping it Simon?
If i understand you correctly the sills do go underneath the car, they are ok all the way along and on both sides underneath.

Before i stripped it i thought there was a small patch on the passenger side and some surface rust on the drivers side - how wrong!!

They seem to rot from the inside out.

Things often turn out like that don't they.

At least you've caught it.

As you may remember from one of my previous posts i had a problem with my fuel filler neck.

Luckily (and with sincere thanks to Dusan) i have managed to obtain a good one, which i have painted up.

I have repainted the wheelarch with underseal paint and refitted the pipe, so hopefully it will last.

It may be worth trying to get that old one fixed up.

Damn, wish I had saved the fuel filler neck from my saloon.....

Also, what do you mean about the original sill profile Chris?
Are you refering to the profile that Honda's have, where the shape of the sill you can see is a plastic cover that goes on over the top.

Luckily my Coupé sills didnt look that bad. I am going to be taking the trims off soon, to make sure they are all 100% water tight before all the wet weather starts up again.

Somebody said a long time ago that the normal (hatch/saloon sill) was underneath and that the coupe had a piece put over the top.

Does that makes sense?

Saturday was a long but rewarding day for the car, thanks mainly to Richard Moss.

As you will see from the pictures the old bad metal was removed and new pieces patched in.

The result is solid sills again.

I definitely want to get some welding equipment now.

Since the welding has been done i have treated the sills (and on the underside) with rust removing gel and Hammerited over them. I intend to add a couple more coats of paint and then some underseal. I am also going to spray waxoyl inside the sills.

I will then start working on the bits that can be seen, filled and nicely rubbed back and painted and then the black trim pieces will be able to go back on at long last!

Thanks again Richard for your help and imparting all that knowledge.

Not the prettiest welding but it did the job.

we did get to answer the age old question on the coupe sills and the answer is "no, there is not a normal profile outer sill behind the coupe one". the inner sill and centre membrane seem to be the same, but the outer is the larger, right angled one that you see. The first picture shows that.

I was torn between welding with the door closed, using something to protect the rubber trim strip, and having the door open with the risk of smoke and sparks getting into the car. i think we were right to go with the door closed option.

Me too.

It's certainly saved me some money over the last 5 years or so.

I'd like to get back into welding as I did as part of a course I did in Beguim some years ago. The welding I did was called arch-welding.

Over the weekend I did the following bits on the car:

Cleaned out the throttle body - it had lots of oil and dirt inside it.

Flushed the old oil and changed the oil and oil/air filters.

Added some fuel treatment to the tank.

Changed the spark plugs.

Changed the thermostat and added some antifreeze to the system.

Hopefully next week i will change the axillary belt, the cam belt and change the gearbox oil.

Did you notice if it runs more evenly with the throttle body cleaned? How did you clean it?
